Niihau The Forbidden Island of Hawaii

My Girlfriend is Hawaiian and Last night with her Mum we were talking about the islands, I didn’t know about the forbidden island of Niihau.

Niʻihau or Niihau is the westernmost and seventh largest inhabited island in Hawaiʻi. It is 17.5 miles southwest of Kauaʻi across the Kaulakahi Channel. It’s area is 69.5 square miles.

Now YOU can visit Niihau, the Hawaiian “Forbidden Island” – where “time has stood still”. One of only three places in the world where technology has not yet moved in, Niihau Island (if you pronounce it “Nee-ee-how” you’ll be pretty close) is a 72 square mile privately owned island just southwest of the island of Kauai. Purchased from King Kamehameha in 1864, this island has preserved many of the traditional ways of life, including the Hawaiian language, and is inhabited by about 200 locals whose primary language is Hawaiian.

Accessible via Niihau Helicopters you can now escape for half a day to this island as a guest of the owners and spend some time on this beautiful and pristine island.

This generally arid island has become home to many free roaming animals on which the Polynesian Boar, Hybrid Sheep, Eland and Oryx have been flourishing on. So you can experience the thrill of a great hunt by going on a Hunting Safari.

Niihau Island is located 18 miles from the island of Kauai across the often-times rough Kaulakahi Channel.

The oldest of the inhabited Hawaiian islands, Niihau is also the least changed by modern progress.

The Niihauans fish and hunt for their main staples of food, with their diet supplemented by supplies brought in by air and sea by the owners of the island. The residents of Niihau still hunt with ropes and knives and fish with spears and nets.

Once they purchased the island in 1864, the owners made a commitment to the maintenance of the Hawaiian culture.

As you can imagine, life on the island is simple, tranquil and blissfully uneventful. That wasn’t the case on December 7, 1941, however. After the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, a lone Japanese pilot crashed his plane on Niihau and took the entire village of Puuwai hostage. Thankfully, two men, Hawila Kaleohano and Beni Kanahele, were able to disarm and kill the intruder. Kanahele, who was shot three times in the incident, reportedly grabbed the pilot and flung him against a wall, cracking his skull. He later received a Purple Heart for his heroics.

A more welcome visitor to Niihau is the endangered Hawaiian monk seal. The population of the species has grown over the years, up to about 35 seals. Ten to 12 seal pups are born on the island every year.

Because most of Niihau is low and dry, the island is too arid to be used for cultivation. Much of the land, in fact, is used for raising cattle, and most residents work on the Robinsons’ ranch. Each family on the island tends to their own garden to supplement the beef and mutton that are raised on the ranch.

A single family has owned the island for more than 150 years and — even though it’s only 17 miles from resort-lined Kauai — Niihau remains surprisingly insulated from the outside world.

The island has no roads (dirt trails navigate its arid, bushy terrain), no cars, no stores, and no Internet. Its sandy beaches see more wildlife than human footprints. Sleepy Hawaiian monk seals dot the coast and schools of sharks have been known to swim remarkably close to empty shores.

 

But the island is populated with people.To this day, only Niihauans, the Robinsons (the descendants of the title-holding family), and the occasional invited guest are allowed there (or near the dozens of homes in the island’s only settlement, Puuwai).

We’ve tried to maintain the request of the King when it was turned over,” Bruce Robinson, one of two brothers who owns the island, told ABC News in 2010. “We maintain the island for the people and continue to work it as he had.”

Those promises afforded Niihauans a luxury that most modern travelers search the world for: A truly secluded and untouched island.

Niihau remains something of a living fossil — a glimpse into what life in the islands might look like if, over the centuries, the rest of Hawaii just stood still.

The Niihauans who remain on the island today live mostly as their Native Hawaiian ancestors did, with hunting and fishing taking up the majority of their days. There are an estimated 70 permanent residents on the island, although that number fluctuates as Niihauans move away or return to the islands. The 2010 census listed its population at 170, but since the Robinsons are not required to submit population estimates, the current number of permanent residents are unknown.

They speak mainly Native Hawaiian, but, because of efforts by the island’s only school and Niihauans access to other islands, some residents also know English. They don’t pay rent, they travel mostly by bike or on foot and most homes rely on rain catchments and generators for water and electricity

They’re also expected to abide by rules set by both the Robinson’s and the village’s earlier generations. Alcohol and guns are not allowed on the island and, according to the New York Times, anyone caught breaking the rules can be evicted.

According to one former resident, Niihau men aren’t allowed to have long hair or wear earrings, and on Sundays, the entire village is expected to go to church.

In 1969, the Milwaukee Journal called Niihau a “Puritan paradise,” because of the religious culture impressed upon the Niihauans by the Robinsons — a family of “strict Scots Presbyterians,” according to the Journal — and the missionaries that came to Niihau decades before it was purchased.

“All those rules came from the old timers, so we just take care of that,” Wehi Kaaumoana, a 34-year-old Niihauan, told The Huffington Post.

The younger people in the village are also expected to take care of and provide for the elders.

“We live off the land. That’s all we have,” Kaaumoana said. Although Niihauans can hop on a barge owned by the Robinsons to go grocery shopping on the island of Kauai, they rely heavily on fishing and hunting to feed the village.

But “the old folks over there, they can’t go beach ‘cause they growing old,” he added. “When we go out and fish and hunt and give them food like that, they happy. We take care of our elderlies. Elderlies are the main thing in life.”

To pass the time, Niihauans go to the beach or watch pre-downloaded movies on iPads, but, like any other small town, people get bored. Kaaumoana, for example, moved off the island in his mid-20s to find work on Kauai.

Island Fever

The island’s small population fluctuates as Niihauans travel or move off the island. The Niihau Cultural Heritage Foundation says that number can drop to below 30 during the summer months as people travel for pleasure or work.

“People leave the island all the time,” Peter T. Young, Hawaii’s former Department of Land and Natural Resources director and Hawaii historian, told HuffPost.

“[Niihau] is isolated for the rest of us, but it’s not an isolated island for them,” Young added. “They don’t look any different, they don’t act any different,” they just “have the opportunity to live in a place that the rest of us have a very limited opportunity to see.”

The perceived mystery of life on the “Forbidden Island” has generated speculation over the years, but Bruce Robinson told ABC News that, “While it is an ancient type of culture, they’re a very modern type of people.”

“There are stories that have been generated of captives living out here,” Robinson added. “People who can’t get out to the cities. That is totally false. In fact, every person on Niihau has been to the mainland. They know all about it. It’s a well-traveled population.”

 

A Taste Of The Forbidden

Niihauans are fiercely protective of their island. In 2013, a group of residents discovered trespassers fishing on their shoreline; they used a digital camera to record the intruders, andpresented the footage to lawmakers, asking for help with protecting their resources.

There are, however, a few sanctioned ways to see Niihau.

Kauai tour boats offer a tiny morsel of Niihau’s pristine waters by offering day-long snorkel and dive trips to the Lehua Crater, a volcanic cone that sits north of Niihau island.

If you want to get on shore, the Robinsons offer extremely guided tours and hunting safaris, ferrying curious tourists on their private helicopter from Kauai to remote parts of Niihau. The half-day guided tour takes guests on an aerial tour, then to a remote beach for lunch and snorkeling.

Day-long hunting trips can cost more than $1,700 a person, but give slightly more access to the island.

The Robinsons’ tours help support Niihau, but purposely avoid contact with the locals and keep the island’s village out of sight, in order to protect the Niihauans’ privacy.

For Bruce Robinson — who’s married to a Niihauan woman — maintaining Niihau’s unique culture and way of life is a priority.

On Niihau, he told lawmakers in 2013, there’s “a feeling of inner peace and renewal that we don’t understand in the outside world. The Western culture has lost it and the rest of the islands have lost it. The only place it’s left is on Ni’ihau.”

“Life is good over there,” he told HuffPost. “Everything you need is there … You can go to the beach and you’ll have the only footprints on the beach. It’s beautiful there.”

HONDA’S New CBR-1100 Should of Been Produced.

Concept motorcycles tend to have strange lives. Some, like the Suzuki GSX1100S, a.k.a the Katana, generate such interest from the public that a production model appears the very next year. Others, like the Honda CB1100R concept, take a little longer.

Publicly shown in October 2007 together with the un-faired CB1100F, the single-seat racing-bodied CB1100R disappeared while its ‘F’ sibling made it into production in 2008. Fast-forward to 2015, and the ‘R’ has reappeared in the form of submissions at the Japanese patent office.

The patent filings deal with air-flow around the spark plugs of the CB1100 engine. Ducted air from the new fairing design is channeled to the plugs and the hottest parts of the engine to take away excess heat. This also helps the engine comply with Euro 4 standards by controlling emissions.

As reported by Motorcyclenews, the concept of the CB1100R is still cooking at Hamamatsu. Honda chief engineer Hirofumi Fukanaga, the man responsible for several generations of the Fireblade, said, “We can’t say no to this bike. It’s not just a simple concept bike – it can’t be. I can’t say when, but the way the European market is going we may well be seeing naked bikes and retro bikes out-selling sportsbikes and the CB1100 has been designed with a long time of development ahead of it.”

I Personally spoke to a few people from Honda USA when the came to visit me and could not emphasize enough that this model shown would be a real winner on the European and American market and I for one would be more than happy to ride one around Orange County for all eternity, as to me this particular model and styling is bang on for a retro Machine that has so much Nostalgia with many people of all ages when the Interceptor came out and started kicking arse on the tarmac.

What I loved about this machine was, well Bloody everything, I mean, just have a gander at it, the 3/4 Fairing is reminiscent of old Paul Dunstall and Gus Khun days of cool after Market stream lining and Fairings that I could only drool about as a teenager in the 1970’s in Magazine and the Earls Court Motorcycle shows I attended back then.

And to have a Modern machine with all the New Whiz bang electronics and gadgets but a Wolf in Sheeps clothing to be honest, this machine would of made a tremendous impact where ever it went, and I for one would of loved the whole concept as it is pouring out the days of yesteryear and Bol d Dor Races from when I had poster on my bedroom wall taken out of Motor Cycle News etc.

Having a Modern Bike yet have the old style Twin shock is something that I really liked and reminiscent of the old Marzochii shocks of the day, I think Japan dropped the proverbial ball when they decided to not go this route and spew out a boring stock looking machine that not even I would take a second look upon.

So I hope if enough people make a few waves about that Tokyo show proto type, it may make those guys with the big check books think twice and once again have Honda up there with the rest of the Power Houses that are on the road today. How can you not like this Concept, as if you are reading my Blog, well, you obviously love retro Motorcycles and Together if we make enough bloody Noise, we met yet see this ride over here, we were so close to getting this, I would hate it to be shelved forever.

I wait with baited breathe for this to occur but time is ticking and I aint getting any younger.

10 Things You Should Know About The Battle Of Britain

The battle of Britain was between Nazi Germany and Britain, and it lasted for three and a half months from July 10th, 1940 to October 31st, 1940. The Germans called it the “Die Luftschalact um England”, meaning “Air battle for England.”

The Royal Air Force (RAF) defended the UK against the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). The primary objective of the Germans was to compel the British to agree to a peace negotiation and settlement. This was something the Germans thought was forthcoming since their defeat of France in June 1940. But even though some in Britain were willing to talk settlement with Germany, Churchill would hear nothing of a British surrender. The Battle began with the Luftwaffe targeting coastal shipping areas and RAF airstrips and infrastructure. As the battle dragged on, the Luftwaffe targeted factories and strategic infrastructure. By the end the of the battle, the Luftwaffe was bombing political targets and civilians in order to get the British to back down and to assert their dominance over the RAF.

But the Luftwaffe failed and it was the RAF who proved to be the better air force. The defeat at the Battle of Britain caused Hitler to cancel Operation Sea Lion which was to be his air and amphibious invasion of Britain.

That is just the beginning of the story of the Battle of Britain. Here are some things many people don’t know about this early World War II battle.

10. It was more than just a Victory for the British

According to statistics, the RAF fighters were made of 2,937 pilot fighters, but only around 2,350 were British. Twenty percent of them were volunteers from Commonwealth countries such as Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand as well as expatriates from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Belgium and other countries that had already fallen to the Nazis. The refugees who had lost their countries and were more than willing to give their lives to help the British fight for the chance to save Europe. There were even American pilots who had joined up to help the British to fight for what they believed was right.

There were so many foreign pilots that joined the RAF that many squadrons were divided by country. The Polish forces had the 302 and the 303 Squadron. The 303 Squadron was considered the most successful squadron of all the Allied squadrons the Battle of Britain with 176 kills. There were several Polish pilots of note with more than 15 kills each but perhaps the most recognized pilot with the 303 squadron wasn’t Polish at all, and he wasn’t even a member of the squadron.

Sgt Josef Frantisek was from Czechoslovakia, he was assigned to the Czech squadron but he preferred to fly alongside his Polish comrades. Desperate for pilots, the British allowed Frantisek to be an unofficial member of the 303 squadron, as an independent pilot. So he followed his own rules, and at times flew off alone, patrolling through areas he anticipated the German aircraft traveled on their way back to base. The German planes returning to base would likely be damaged and low on fuel, so he would ambush the fighter planes brutally bringing them down. He was able to score 17 victories in this manner.

9. The Battle of Britain Made History as the First Airborn Combat

Hitler’s war plan against the British was to win air superiority over England by completely destroying the RAF after which he could invade Great Britain with less resistance. The Luftwaffe went ahead to launch an attack on coastal shipping convoys and shipping centers and after one month, they shifted their target to RAF airfields, infrastructures, and aircraft factories. So, the British, realizing that the attacks were airborne, came up with airborne counter attacks. The RAF and allied pilots continued with this plan, dominating the skies and displaying their superiority over the Luftwaffe. This continued until the Allies raided Berlin which shifted the German targets away from the RAF airfields and infrastructures.

Hermann Goering was the Luftwaffe commander, and he believed that he could sweep aside the RAF in a few days of airborne combat. He greatly underestimated the skill and tenacity of the RAF fighters. They dragged the battle out for three and a half months proving that the RAF would not be so easily dispatched. Britain had support not only from the UK, but from 15 other countries. With the aid of so many planes and skilled pilots this was the first battle that was waged exclusively in the air, mainly because Hitler wanted to avoid an invasion of Britain while the RAF was still operational.

The Germans operated throughout the battle by constantly underestimating the number of aircraft and pilots that the RAF had and their ability to service them and get new planes in the air. On the other hand the RAF constantly overestimated the size and strength of the Luftwaffe causing them to believe that even with their gains they were still fighting a much more powerful enemy. The beliefs held by the two sides might explain the ferocity with which the Allied pilots flew and the inability of the Luftwaffe to win the battle.

8. The Battle Included One of the Earliest Uses of Radar in Combat

The battle of Britain, amidst other things, was a platform for testing the superiority of the radar technology; which was still very new at the time. The Germans did not have a good understanding of radar and how it worked, so they did not understand the advantage that it offered the RAF. The British had built a number of radar sites around the coastline and they could have been easily destroyed by the Luftwaffe, but the Germans never saw them as valuable targets. This was a fatal error by the Germans because even though Radar was still new and very primitive by today’s standards, it was able to give the RAF warning of many of the German attacks. This, coupled with a Civilian Observer Corps to spot low flying aircraft, made the Germans lose the element of surprise, which is a vital part of every war.

There were some drawbacks as British fighter pilots occasionally found themselves in dangerous situations because the interpreter would misconstrue information from the signal thereby sending inaccurate info on enemy aircraft’s height and strength. But even though Radar had trouble spotting low flying craft and the signal was not always clear as to the size of the craft, it proved its worth during the Battle of Britain. It allowed the RAF to have the upper hand and shows Hitler’s folly in not updating and operating the German Radar system.

The Luftwaffe was then forced to do bombing missions at night or in poor weather because while the Radar would still pick up the plane, there was little the RAF could do about it without pilots making visual contact.

7. The Hawker Hurricane Fought Better than the Supermarine Spitfire

At the end of the war many people credited the Submarine Spitfire as being the plane that saved Britain. Indeed the plane looked much more impressive than the older Hawker Hurricane plane and it was more advanced. But as pilots during the war can attest, the more modern Spitfire was not always the better choice.  The Hurricane was slower and less elegant than the Supermarine Spitfire, but they were tough in battle and easy to repair. The turnaround time (to re-arm, get repaired, refueled, etc.) for the Hurricane was only nine minutes while that of the Spitfire was a whole twenty-six minutes. Therefore, the Spits spent a long time on the ground during the war. In that case, the time spent on the ground when they became faulty is crucial and can be said to be the difference between victory and defeat in battle.

The Hurricane brought down more enemy planes than the Spitfire, but there were far fewer Spitfires than Hurricanes. The greater number of the Hurricanes (they outnumbered the Spitfires 2 to 1) and the fact that they had to spend less time on the ground than the Spitfires helped them achieve more kills. The Germans also had very little respect for the Hurricane because it was little more than a plane built of wood and fabric, and no German wanted to admit to being shot down by a plane like that. The Germans did have respect for the Spitfires however. During the war, the Spitfires focused on the German BF 109s, which all flew at a higher altitude, and the Hurricanes attacked the German bomber aircraft formation flying at a lower altitude.

6. Hitler’s Decision to Bomb London Didn’t Work Out as he had Anticipated – It Turned the Battle in Britain’s Favor.

Initially, the bombing campaigns of the Germans were restricted to military bases and industrial targets. But that all changed in September 1940 when Britain’s RAF launched their own attack on Berlin. The attack on his own city infuriated Hitler and he called off the progressing Luftwaffe activities in attacking the RAF airbases. His aim was to redirect the Luftwaffe and their new orders were to focus on “erasing British cities from the map” starting with London.

On September 7th, 1940, Hitler began what has now become called The Blitz and sent his bombers directly to London. For the next 57 nights Luftwaffe bombers attacked London, destroying more than 1 million homes and killing 40,000 citizens. While devastating to London the shift in target gave RAF time to recuperate as they were temporally relieved of pressure. They were given time to refresh their pilots and repair all of their planes. The repaired, refreshed and angry RAF was then more than ready to intercept a massive air attack by the Germans on September 15. The RAF pilots brought down about 60 Luftwaffe planes, once again proving the superiority of the RAF over the Luftwaffe. At this point, Hitler had no option but to terminate operation Sea Lion (which was Hitler’s plan to invade the UK) a few days later. So despite the devastation in London the switch in targets gave the RAF the time they needed to win the battle.

5. A British Pilot Selflessly Prevented an Attack on Buckingham Palace after Ramming a German Bomber with his Wing

Before the war Sergeant Ray Holmes was a journalist and after the war he was known as the man who saved Buckingham Palace.

He joined the RAFVR in 1937 and in 1940 he was assigned to the No. 504 Squadron. On September 15th, 1940 he was flying his Hawker Hurricane through what had become a typical aerial battle, bringing down the bombers that sought to destroy London. However, this time he spotted a damaged German bomber heading in the direction of Buckingham Palace. In a daring attempt to protect the historical royal residence Ray Holmes faced the German bomber head on and avoided the return fire.

Yet when Ray tried to fire his machine guns and take down the enemy plane, his guns failed. So with no other option and knowing he had to save the palace he flew his plane right into the German bomber. Hoping that his Hurricane would be strong enough to drive through the German plane and come out the other side. The wing of his plane took off the tail of the enemy bomber and it crashed near Victoria station. Ray’s Hurricane was also badly damaged in the collision and but he bailed out and safely landed on a London apartment complex.

He was heralded a hero and his story became a thing of London legend. 65 years later, National Geographic Channel aired a special documentary called The Search for the Lost Fighter Plane in which Ray’s Hurricane is finally excavated from the London rubble.

4. Winston Churchill had Predicted a Showdown with Germany and Named it the Battle of Britain

In May 1940 the tide of the war was changing, much of Western Europe had fallen to the Nazis. Belgium, the Netherlands, and France had all fallen. Great Britain stood as the only Allied power left. Hitler expected that the British would just surrender without a war considering that they stood no chance. Even some of Winston Churchill’s advisers suggested that they negotiate a deal with Hitler. But Churchill refused, he refused to let Europe fall and he refused to let Britain lose who she was, but he had to convince the British public that their sacrifice would be worth it.

So on June 18th he delivered a speech that spelled out the stakes of the upcoming war and what would be lost if Britain fell to Germany.  He said “The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of a perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say,

“This was their finest hour”.”

3. Pilot Shortages Caused the Training Time to be Cut to 2 Weeks.

Winston Churchill once spoke that “never had so many owed so much to so few” and in that he referred to the British people and their debt to the fighter pilots who fought to try and save British cities. The pilots were exhausted working 15 hour shifts, doing multiple bombing runs a day and only getting a few hours of sleep at a time. Some pilots were known to take amphetamine pills just to keep up and stay fighting. Pilots were exhausted but on the British side they were willing to keep fighting because they believed their way of life was at stake. The Germans also experienced fatigue and pilot shortages but they had a harder time motivating their forces and filling the pilot shortages.

Unfortunately the RAF had already been fighting the war in France which meant that they had lost hundreds of their experienced pilots. When it came time to defending their own homeland, the RAF was short on skilled pilots and therefore did not have the pilots they needed to allow for rotations and pilot leave. They called in the reserves but many of those men had little flying experience and no gunnery training. The RAF had no shortage of volunteers, especially once the Battle of Britain began, but they were hampered by the typically 6 month training period. They were so desperate for pilots that training was cut down to a mere two weeks. When some pilots took to skies in order to defend the country during the Battle of Britain they had spent a little as 9 hours in a modern fighter plane.

2. Even After the Battle had Ended, German still Continued with their Bombing Raids

In October 1940, Hitler realized that the Luftwaffe had still not achieved air superiority over the RAF, so he turned his attention away from his quest to take over the British airspace to attacking the Soviet Union. But even though this marked the end of the Battle of Britain that did not stop German bombing raids on British soils. The Blitz Operation went on conducting series of bombing raids against Britain, most of which took place at night. Hitler hoped that the continued bombing raids would break British resilience and he would be able to invade Britain at a later date. The Luftwaffe conducted these nighttime bombing raids over places like London, Coventry, and a handful of other cities in British.

This went on for several months, but the Germans still could not break the fighting spirit of the British and the whole of Western Europe. Over 267 days London was attacked 71 times and other cities continued to be bombed as well. The bombings continued all the way up until May of 1941 when Hitler finally abandoned any hope of doing an invasion of Great Britain. But the damage to the country had been significant more than a million homes were damage and tens of thousands had lost their lives.

 

1. Hitler Tried to Convince Britain to Surrender Without a Fight

Britain was the last country in Western Europe to stand against Hitler after he had conquered other European nations. The defeat of France was an especially hard blow and one that Hitler believed would lead to a British surrender. But despite his lightning conquest of France and after just six weeks of the combat, he was still wary of invading Britain. Since Britain was under the protection of the English Channel and also being that their Royal Navy was superior to the German Kriegsmarine, he wanted to avoid an invasion. Hitler hoped that Britain would peacefully surrender to Germany and agree to a negotiated peace settlement.

However, even though a small contingent of British politicians also favored a compromise, Churchill dismissed any negotiations of surrender and declared that Britain was determined to fight on. The truth is, Hitler never wanted to go into a fight with the British. He had expected them, and compelled them to surrender without a fight and sue for peace, but Britain refused, stating emphatically

“We shall never surrender.”

Hitler was then forced to issue “Directive Number 16” code-named Operation Sea Lion, an invasion that was considered as a last resort if the peace agreement failed. However, Operation Sea Lion depended on the Luftwaffe dominating the RAF which never happened, so Operation Sea Lion was postponed after the Battle of Britain. As the war progressed, Hitler abandoned Operation Sea Lion entirely and he never attempted an invasion of Britain.

ICON 1000 – 2014 THRUXTON

Well, today i wanted to show you how to change the look of your Trumpy and this Icon 1000 is a really tough looking bike, I am in awe of its toughness and would love to maybe build something like that at some point.

It was Wes White’s late sixties Triumph TR6C featured on the website Chop Cult in 2009, which started my interest in the Desert Sled. A year later the Hammarhead Jack Pine was revealed to the world on BikesExif. It was these two Triumph Scramblers, one old for style, and one new for practicality, which inspired me to build.

That was six years ago!, and I believe its time to move on!. Once again I’m visiting motorcycle museums for ‘vintage style’, and keeping an eye on the web and custom motorcycle shows for ‘inspiration’.

I am also planning a workshop at my home in Dorset. It will be in this workshop, and with the help of local craftsmen and bike builders, I hope build another custom Hinckley Triumph… or perhaps just make a bloody mess of a good bike!, regardless, this time, it wont be a Scrambler!

What may influence this next builds is this 2014 Thruxton, named the “Three Martini Lunch”, a collaboration by Icon 1000 and Triumph North America, a build  “fuelled with shop-floor gin drinks and paint fumes”. Kurt Walter the creative designer at Icon 1000, wanted a custom Triumph that would appeal to ICON core market, maintaining the road-race styling and component cues of the ICON 1000 bikes.

As usual at Bonnefication we start with the frame, clearly undergoing a huge amount of reconfiguring – forget frame loops!, this Thruxton has lost it’s entire rear-end. Replaced by a custom mono- subframe, supporting the rider, as well as a one-off Nitron mono-shock setup.

Frame modifications continue under the Thruxton, with the removal of much of the detachable cradles, exposing the engine and giving this Triumph a Ducati vibe – compounded by the fitting of a modified Ducati MH900E fairing from Aristech, painted in is General Motors Verdoro Green, and fitted with a headlight found on logging trucks…. now thats a mongrel of a fairing!

The classic Triumph styling is long gone, what may raise a few eyebrows is the choice of tank, meant for a Yamaha FZ600 – again heavily modified, not only to fit the Hinckley frame, but also to allow room for the re-routed, and heat shielded exhaust system, now running over the engine and under the Aristech Harley tail section.

Kurt wanted to fit the heavily shouldered 16” rear wheel from a Kawasaki KZ1000 to both front and back of the Thruxton, made possible by welding up the cush-drive on the wheel destined for the front.

The fitting of the wider wheel, now shod in vintage Avon tires, meant that it no longer fitted the stock forks. To overcome this, the stock forks were replaced with those from a Harley Wide Glide, and involved cutting bits out of that Ducati MH900E fairing.

What ever your thoughts on the  “Three Martini Lunch”,  you can’t deny it’s fascinating!, perhaps like the Hammarhead Jack Pine, it may be a build which drives the custom Triumph scene in a new and exciting direction…. lets hope so.

Triumph Thruxton R- The Bulldog

The Glemseck 101 festival is on again this weekend in Germany and it’s geared up to be bigger than ever. This year there’s been a lot of hype surrounding what is arguably the highlight of the show, the Glemseck 1/8 mile sprints. The custom builder class, named ‘Sultans of Sprint’, is definitely a stand out for me, but there are also a few other rather interesting classes being run. There’s a cafe racer category, rigid frame class, pre-1983 motorcycles and the ‘Essenza – Essence of Motorcycles’ class that is open to any twin cylinder bike under 1200cc. As one of the major sponsors of the Glemseck festival Triumph Germany have seized the opportunity to compete in the Essenza class by building two rather brutal custom versions of their recently released T120 Thruxton R.

The bike you see here has been named ‘The Bulldog’ and it’s the more sinister looking Thruxton R of the pair. Aesthetically the Bulldog has an air of streetfighter about it while still retaining elements of its retro cafe racer styling. The team at Triumph Germany have discarded the Thruxton’s classically styled headlight in favour of a front fairing repurposed from their 2016 Speed Triple R. To adibe to the events ‘road-legal’ rule they’ve integrated an LED headlight into the unit that’s tucked neatly into the air ducts in its base. The menacing satin black and blood red paint scheme does wonders for the Bulldogs threatening demeanour, and there’s a colour matched seat and blacked out rims that have come straight out of Triumph’s aftermarket catalogue.

However menacing the Bulldog may appear, it’s the bikes performance modifications that should really be making its competitors nervous. Triumph have managed to generate an incredible 60% more power from their all new 1200cc, water cooled parallel twin. How is such a huge increase in power possible you ask? Well that’s simple, you just have to bolt a whopping great big blower to it.

Hanging off the right hand side of the Bulldog’s T120 engine is a Rotrex supercharger. In a nutshell, the supercharger kit increases the amount of oxygen available during combustion to produce a better fuel burn and in turn, loads more power. To keep temperatures and pressure in check there’s an intercooler slung beneath the Thruxton’s radiator and a blow off valve.
If it’s numbers that really get you excited. The 60% increase equates to a jump in power from 96bhp to an impressive 139bhp and boosts the torque figure up from 112Nm to 157Nm. With all that extra power and torque on tap I think it’s safe to say that bikes traction control is going to have its work cut out for it!

Along with the supercharger kit Triumph have also pieced together a custom, twin pipe exhaust system that looks to have little regard for European noise emissions. To handle the extra power at the rear wheel they’ve also added a braced MotoGP swingarm and wrapped the rims in extra grippy Metzeler Racetec RR road racing rubber.

The Bulldog’s tail end has also been cleaned up with new LED lighting and a tail tidy and the top clamp has been modified to hold nothing more than a couple LED warning lights and the ignition barrel. To help pilot the bike to victory Triumph have enlisted motorcycle critic and journalist Christophe Lentsch. All of the races will be wrapping up today so if you head over to the Glemseck 101 facebook page this week you’ll be able to see how they placed.

Triumph Motorcycles have entered two stonking supercharged Thruxton R bikes in the ‘Essenza – The Essence of Motorcycles’ challenge races that take place tomorrow, September 3 at the Glemseck 101.

The first is a sleek marriage of modern racing lines with a classic T120 parallel-twin heart, the second a dark brooding retro street fighter.

‘The White Bike’ which will be ridden by Triumph Global Ambassador, Carl Fogarty, while the ‘The Bulldog’ will be ridden by Christophe Lentsch from 1000ps.

The White Bike’ gets some aerodynamic efficiency from its Daytona 675R fairing and seat, while it also gets a braced, MotoGP-inspired swingarm has been hand-crafted in the factory and revised gearing helps to feed the power to the tarmac.

‘The Bulldog’ is more brutal. It also gets a deep-braced swingarm, with the front dominated by a custom Speed Triple R intake fairing, repurposed to house the LED front lights. Final detail touches include the factory-accessory seat and matching factory-accessory black wheels.

Hot Rodding is a Passion all over the world

I have been into Hot Rods since I was a Teenager, I am originally from North london, but Mum and Dad moved more times than I care to remember, but, we lived on the ast coast in East Anglia for a number of years and that is where I got my real affection for Hot Rodding, we were close to numerous American Air Bases and I remember seeing a Model A Roadster and thought to myself,”Why would I want a Morris Minor, when I could drive something cool like that?”

You would think that I am just a small minority of people that would really dig the American lifestyle, especially the Vintage era too- But you would be so wrong, People all over the world are as nutty as Hot Rods and the lifestyle as me.

So today I thought that I would add some video’s that I enjoy and I am sure you will too.

“The year is 1947, an ex-serviceman returns home to Southern California. His old ’32 Ford Roadster is removed from the shed, and the guts of a wrecked ’39 Mercury sedan are transplanted in, giving more power, braking and top speed, essential for the dry lakes racing career he will embark on. He outfits the motor with products from the growing speed equipment industries catalogues, and races his car against fellow car club members and the clock.

The car also serves as daily transport for him in the mild So Cal climate, the loud twin exhausts upsetting the locals still not used to the returned soldiers need for peacetime thrills. The era immediately following WW2 in Southern California was the time frame and inspiration for me to build an accurate recreation of a stripped down, dry lakes racing, late forties street roadster. Something of a time machine, so that a drive down the street or across the state could become a journey back sixty years.

My 1928 Roadster

Well, here it is, my 1928 Roadster, with a Flatty hooked up to a 1939 Box. But, it needs some work and over the next few weeks, I hope to have this running well and driving down the road.

I shall be changing this to a more traditional AV8 Roadster of the era I really love and that’s post WW2, I will be selling the top and making a lower version with chopped windshield too.

I am looking forward to changing the look and this is pretty good shape too, even though it is cool, there is a lot of re-work that has to be undertaken.

There is the beloved flathead, the very first V8 came from ole Henry Ford himself, but the Motor sits too far back so need to move an inch and half forward to make it right and no vibration.

The electrical is a disaster, the guy who had it did a terrible job and I am having many power issues now and am trying to source the issue as this is still a 6 volt system, so nothing wants to turn over long else the battery will die. This is all going to change as I shall have it converted to 12 volt as it makes for far more easier starting and can see at night with no dim Glow from 6 Volt bulbs.

This will still need a ton of work and I hope I can get there soon as I want to be able to drive it in the next month or so as I love the look, just mechanicals need sorting.

I shall be fitting a 2 inch chopped windshield and later get a chopped top for it and of course I will lower the seat a few inches to allow for that.

Above will be the New X member that will be going in place of the shoddy one some fella attempted at welding in with some cheap stick welder, so this is going to be gone through and make sure all is safe and strong, as my Girlfriend will drive it too and need it to be roadworthy, right now I have a few issues to get ironed out but will get there bit by bit.

The Motor is now going to be moved forward, as well as the rest of the running gear, the Muppet who originally fitted the flatty put it back too far and the motor was pushed against the firewall.

Takes time, Money and Patience but I shall be keeping the Roadster in memory of my dear MUM.

I will run with No bumpers later and will also be taking the A-Bone Radiator and Shell out, and replace with a genuine 1932 Grill shell and insert as I have always loved that look.

 

This will be such a fun Hot Rod and dream of the day I take it for a run across El Mirage dry lake later on, as thats been a dream for so many years.

Above, 1936 Rear Radius Rods, these will be fitted to my Model A to give it much added strength for the V8 Flatty Motor.

Later on I shall be making this 1936 Ford Dashboard, fit the 29 Model A Gas tank, as I love this Post war style that was popular in Southern California back in the day and will simply swap out once painted and gauges fitted etc, but that’s a little later on down the road, but exciting stuff none the less.

I want to make sure this A Bone is safe and with a X member I know the chassis wont be flexing as much, as I have seen so many crack over the years on the shitty roads we have here in California as the freeway beats Hot Rods up for sure.

As you can see, the body had to come off for a number of reasons, and one was to move the engine forward and secondly to be able to fit the X member and over riders correctly, glad we have got to this point,

A better solution than the crap that was one there before, and also Bungs were welded in chassis to make fitting Roadster body easier.

Up in the air and soon to be laced back on the strengthened frame and I will be feeling a lot happier for that.

Flatty Motor is a 24 stud 1939 Era with Edelbrock heads and intake with three 97 Strombergs, The Radiator fan is now replaced with new bearings too, and the 6 volt system has been removed and 12 volt system now lives there with a one wire powergen to make sure I have plenty of electrical Voltage.

My 28 Roadster Body is in pretty good shape, Later on i shall be replacing the gas tank with another as I will be fitting a 1936 Dash in the old gas tank area.

Looking forward to when she is sat back on the rails and can get on with a few other things as she will be having 1936 Ford wish Bones on the rear and I have a 2 inch chopped stainless steel windshield to fit, along with a 1948 F1 steering box with a Limeworks 40 Ford style steering wheel.

The 1936 Rear Bones were cut and shortened and the welded and will make a big difference in the Rigidity on the rear end for sure, as this is a proven Formula from back in the day.

The complete X member kit is now in place with Boxing plates and this really is a good thing for me as I will feel a lot safer, I have seen many stock Model A frames that have stress cracks as they fitted a Flathead and the power does cause a lot more stress on the chassis, this was a Hot Rod Fab back in the day too.

Well, the stock winshield posts have gone and now a 2 inch chopped Stainless Steel set up is in place, looks way better now and am stoked to have it on the Roadster.

The Body is about to be plopped back onto the rails, all the old nuts that sat under the frame have now been replaced with threaded bungs, so no more struggling to hold the nut with a wrench under the chassis.

Now I have the 1936 Ford rear Radius Rods in and the Handbrake cable from 40 ford to Model A in Place, things are getting closer to be finished.

Slave cylinders are all good , as is the brake shoes etc, bit of adjusting to do but on step closer to getting her ready for a road test.

New fuel line will be added to the pump, filter and to the Strombergs.

New OEM 1939 Fan assembly but with New bearing and to help with Battery, a New Powergen, this goes from a 6 volt ride to a 12 volt.

Limeworks 1940 Ford steering wheel will be fitted to the F1 Column I have and wil be smooth to turn now, before, the notchy A Bone Column was a nightmare.

I shall keep the Model A Grill shell for a little while but have a genuine 32 one to replace it.

Reworked Model A pedal assembly will be fitted today, then the handbrake will be made to fit the 39 gearbox and a New floor to be added too.

Bit by Bit she will get stuff done, wont look much different but will handle so much better than it did when I first got iy.

Hope you like how she is turning out, this is something I shall keep as it is in memory of my Dear Mum!

Steering Column is in, just needs the tube cover to go on but it looks the right height, although I want to lower the seat somewhat.

I am glad how everything is working out as this needed a lot of work that someone had thrown together badly.

I have a Limeworks Steering wheel on that F1 Column and it looks great, great value for money. Also fitted 40 Ford pedal tops to Model A pedals.

Looks great in Black and White photo and wont be too long now before I can have a test drive.

Next up was to make a handbrake for the Rod, as there was not one in it at all, so a hunt for a few parts was needed as this A Bone now had Juice brake, lucky for me I located the handbrake, the wires and attachments as I need to be able to have a handbrake in this Jalopy.

Sat back on the floor for some more work, wiring needs to be addressed and as she is now 12 volt, make sure the bulbs are changed in the 6V lamps etc.

Bit more done but the battery will be repositioned, then, new wiring as well as securing the F1 steering box and fitting new switches for fuel pump and ignition etc.

Up next was some floor work that needed to be rectified , as the original is just wooden and I did not want that, this body is now sturdy to the chassis since the X member kit was added, and the doors will not pop open like many stock version do when the Ford goes up a drive way hill or a dropped kerb etc.

These are hand rolled and sure look nice in steel rather than ugly timber.

You can see that the Model A pedals have been reconfigured and now have 40 Ford tops on them.

Feels more like a Hot Rod now, rather than a Resto and will not be long until I can test drive her.

The Motor now runs and is smooth, only running the middle Stromberg right now but hope to use all Three later on once all the bugs have been worked out, straight through pipes for now until later in the year when I remove the fenders and run as a high boy and will use 1936 Torque Tubes for the headers like they did back in the Dry lakes days.

I am so glad that she is running Now, sounds quite smooth now that is fitted with a New Old stock fan and as she is turned from 6 Volt to 12 volt, she will fire up a lot easier and no more dim headlights.

Well, time has just tocked on a few days and I am glad to say I at last got the chance to drive it for the first time yesterday, mind you it was 100 degree’s outside.

Sitting pretty, this was a big moment for me, I dreamt of having my own Roadster in California for ions, and now here I am and its great.

She sits well but have to tell you, the rear shocks are shot to bits, so I will need to find some slightly longer and robust versions, maybe Pete & Jakes, but have to weld on shock mounts as the person before set these up for standard car shocks with no clevis at the top, but that’s all repairable and even though it bumps pretty hard, its so much fun.

I am happy at the style right now as I parked it outside my Motorcycle shop in Anaheim, it was 100 degree’s but I still drove it around and smiled all the way.

I will eventually remove the fenders and grill and fit a Genuine 1932 Grill shell and change lights and that is what Hot Rodding is all about.

Looks way better with the 2 inch Windshield chop and eventually I will get a retractable top but not just yet, but- I do need to cut the seat riser down about 4-6 inches I think.

The seat is Bone stock Model A and I sit too high, but I will try and locate another seat Riser and channel it a few inches to sit lower and have that early look too.

The flatty runs pretty good and right now, just on the middle 97 Stromberg but hope to hook the other two up at a later stage, once I have worked all the bumps out.

Having a bit of fun with a 1956 Flying Cloud Airstream,as these are the coolest trailers and easy to tow because they are so light and balanced well.

Yes- reverse does work and had to get used to the old style clutch pedal and it worked really well indeed on this AV8 Roadster of mine.

Eventually I will locate a 1940’s trailer and be able to tow it to the dry lakes.

My Girlfriend loved it, it was fun driving it on the road for the first time, albeit 100 degree’s out and I live about 13 miles from the shop, so as I pulled into our street the radiator started to puke hot water out of the top cap, but that’s to be expected from the summer heat. All was good later on in the evening when I drove it around the block with Jen to try it out.

I have more plans for the Roadster, I will change the Radiator and the grill shell for a 1932 version and will remove the fenders too, then use 1936 Torque Tubes for headers and run them out the sides for an older style of Hot Rod, the car is always an on going challenge but that’s what Hot Rodding is all about.
