Hot this weekend that’s for sure in Southern California

Hot weather is still here and will continue for a couple of weeks I think, but 112 and 114 is a little too hot to be in the shed this weekend, plus I have stuff to do in our Garden with my Girl. so I have been out doing that, but tomorrow I have to fit some throttle cables to that K6 and tidy a few things up before I offer it for sale, its a great bike for the money with so many New parts.

I have many projects to get into later on, another 16 bikes to sort out but its fun doing it and doing it at home in my own time and do what ever I want to do, I love that feeling and always have a smile when I go in the Barn.  I love all machines and have a few different bikes to build but the platform I have loved is the inline four, always cool to see people on them.

Hope that some of you get time to get out on your machines this Summer, before it gets colder further North, lucky for me, we can ride most of the year round, I ride every single day and never tire of it to be honest.

I’m still busy with my parts and builds and more to come later but just wanted to say howdy and do a quick Blog as its been a while, but always check my daily emails and texts.

Have a great weekend and thank you for all your orders, I am here to help, next year is 25 years in business and its going to be exciting as ever.

Gene Romero Memorial on Saturday was awesome.

It was with a little bit of a heavy heart as I rode my Scrambler to Triumph in Brea on Saturday morning, but, the Sun was out and as soon as I pulled into Southern California Motorcycles, I could feel the buzz of excitement, apprehension and sadness, all mixed into one.

I parked up the Triumph and walked up to where everyone was gathered, and a nice turn out to remember the Flat Track legend Gene Romero, most remembered him as the flying Burrito and he sure was, this guy  came from a humble background, always living in a small travel trailer and with his brothers, they all had a passion for 2 wheels.

Seeing the many early Racers, fans and of course Family in one place was something to behold and I was glad that Jennifer and I could make the trip to Triumph to honor such a great guy.

Here are a bunch of pics I took from the memorial on Saturday.

I was stunned at so Many original riders that turned up for the event and turned around and saw this little fella with a huge Cowboy hat, then realized it was king Kenny Roberts himself.

I couldn’t believe I was seeing Kenny Roberts, the last time I saw him in real life was way back in 1975 at Snetterton Race track when I watched him Race my Hero Barry Sheene and Gene Romero in the Trans Atlantic Series, I shook his hand and said I last saw him 43 years ago.Kenny Replied- I had a Funny Accent and must be from the other side, I laughed and said Barry sends his regards.

I was so stoked to meet Kenny and to see all the other Vintage Riders that raced against the Flying Burrito, what a super turn out. First pic is Ricky Johnson, what a Legend there too.

In the Triumph Motorcycle shop, they had made a great Gallery of some of gene’s personal things, I loved all the riding gear, and the trophy that gene won back in 1975 when I saw him race at Snetterton. Meant a lot to me to attend this memorial, a hero of mine who ended up being a good friend and we hung out a lot at my shop with him telling me so many stories about the racing days.

Gene Romero “The Flying Burrito passes away at 72 years Young

It is with a heavy heart that I write this post today, last night I found out that an Iconic hero of mine and great friend, Gene Romero, the Flying Burrito as many knew him, passed away of Cancer at the young age of 72 .

Gene Romero was one of the best-known motorcycle racers in the U.S. during late 1960s and early ’70s. Romero won the AMA Grand National Championship in 1970 riding for Triumph. Known as a TT specialist early in his career, Romero became a top contender in all forms of Grand National racing and won nationals on miles, half-miles, road-racing circuits and TT tracks.

The biggest win of Romero’s career came in the Daytona 200 in 1975. Romero had been racing in the 200 since 1967 and came close to winning in 1970 and again in 1971, when he was the runnerup. Romero came through with an excellent ride in 1975 aboard a factory Yamaha. He rode for most of the race in fourth. About midway through the race, he began to pour on the speed, passing Giacomo Agostini and Steve Baker and eventually taking the lead when Steve McLaughlin crashed under Romero’s relentless pressure. Romero cruised home to victory. It would prove to be his only win in the Daytona 200 in 14 starts.

Born on May 22, 1947, in Martinez, California, Romero honed his racing skills on the dirt track and scrambles tracks of the Central Valley of California. He cites Johnny LaManto as a major influence on his desire to race. Romero described LaManto as a hell-raising local legend who lived at a ranch that neighbored his grandfather’s ranch near Hollister, California. As an amateur, Romero used his scrambles skills to become a top TT Steeplechase rider. Not surprisingly, Romero’s first pro finish came at the Castle Rock (Washington) TT in July of 1966. His first national win came two years later, again on a TT course, this time in Lincoln, Nebraska, riding a Triumph.

Romero won 12 AMA nationals during his 16-year racing career. He became known as one of the first riders to bring sponsorship into the sport from outside the motorcycling industry. One year the famous motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel was Romero’s primary sponsor. In 1970 Romero won the prestigious AMA Most Popular Rider of the Year Award.

Romero raced motorcycles until 1981. After a short auto racing career, Romero became the manager of Honda’s AMA Grand National dirt track racing program from 1982 to 1985. From there, Romero formed a promotions company and is involved in numerous projects from motorcycle racing series to town fairs and festivals.

Gene came to my shop quite a lot and used to hang out and tell me many stories of his racing career, I was always in awe of him and we got on like he was my uncle, such a great guy and will never be forgotten.

I mentioned to Gene that when I was a kid, I loved the smell of Castrol R oil as i used to hitch hike to Snetterton race track to watch the international Trans Atlantic series, where Gene raced my Brit hero Barry Sheene, the very next day gene turned up and gave me some of his old Castrol R oil , he was sponsored by Castrol and still had some left, what a great guy.

A man I will always respect and hold in high esteem, Thank you gene for spending many hours with me and making me feel part of the Romero Family, you have completed your final lap but can now look down on us all and smile that people will always love you mate. Rest in peace gene, my thoughts are with you and your family today.

Moto Classic at Bolsa Chica State Beach- California

Well, Saturday came around way too fast for me and Jennifer and I jumped on our machines and headed out to Bolsa Chica State Beach, about 16 miles from where we live in La Mirada, the sun was out and the clouds were nowhere to be seen.

After about 20 minutes we arrived, only for me to just remember that I had put the tickets on the fridge door for safe keeping and like a twat- I forgot to pick them up.

So Jenn sat by her bike and tried the ring the neck out of the Triumph to get home in time, grab tickets and get back in maybe less than an hour.

Bugger me, I got about 6 miles and the road was closed off, helicopters flying low and Cops all over the place, so- I turned on the phone to maps mode and plotted my way back to my place, left and right I turned, into a housing tracked, then as I turned right, bang in the middle of the road was a crime scene white RV, cops all looking at me and Helicopters kicking dust up like an Egyptian storm.

I had literally ridden into the Crime scene where some poor bugger got Horizontal, but- I didnt  have time to check out the Morbidity- I just wound that loud tube up and got on it, 45 Bloody traffic light stops later I got to the house, ran in, grabbed the tickets and I left the Triumph running, and jumped on the bike, cained its arse another route to Bolsa Chica and got back in a really fast time, allowing us to walk from our bikes and onto the beach.

6

Plenty of people about and they all followed the path laid out on the beach and the smell of 2 an 4 stroke Exhaust Vapors could be experienced.
1

We got into the event and walked around the Vendors area, tons of cool 10X10 Eazy Ups with companies selling Apparel to parts and the sound of a Good reggae band also filled the air where people hung out and enjoyed the festivities etc.

2

Amongst all that noise and splendor, there were bikes racing up and down, entertaining the crowd with Wheelies, Donut Burn Outs and other trick riding, on another part of the beach there was a small winding race track set up for mini bikes, where people from kids to older than me raced around this little track, trying to not crash or bump elbows.

3

Then there was the Pitts, we we walked into there and saw many faces I had not seen in a while, had a quick chat but as it was race time, most were putting on there Helmets and getting ready for their heat, as there was a bigger track set up for Flat track and quite a few Classic or Vintage bikes set up for that, as well as many Modern bikes.

4

We watched the Vintage stuff as thats what I am into and had a few buddies racing in the same race, @Jimmy White @ Grant Petersen were both giving it all, poor Jimmy had a small crash but he got up and raced the next race.

47

It was fun to watch and plenty of spectators there to see what it was all about and many smiles to be seen for this event on a Hot October day in Southern California. Below oare some photos that I took with my Little Camera and I enjoyed watching the lads battle it out on the track.

51 52 53 54 55 57 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68 69 70

The only downside was they should of had bleachers for that event as you pay all that money and cant see for shit as the fence is in the way, it was the spectators that contributed most of the money to watch this even but were restricted but the wire fence that was well in the way, so next time, try Bleachers, more people can see whats gong on and can have fun and take photos as the fence hindered anyone taking photos.

73

Plenty to look at though and I think the vendors did pretty well. I took a few more snaps so I hope you enjoy them?

Also there were a number of bands playing there right on into the night so I am sure it was a huge hit for Roland Sands organization.

The weather was great and as far as I know there were no bad accidents and maybe this will become an annual show if the City will give out Permits.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL.

We at Carpy’s Cafe Racers wish you a very Happy 2016 and hope that the New year brings you good health, wealth and Prosperity throughout.

Here we have a Few Videos.

Below is some History and information you may like to know.

In the early 1900s the sands were used as a venue for car and motor cycle races. From 1922 the annual Welsh TT motor cycle event was held at Pendine Sands. The firm flat surface of the beach created a race track that was straighter and smoother than many major roads of the time. Motor Cycle magazine described the sands as “The finest natural speedway imaginable”.

In the 1920s it became clear that roads and race tracks were no longer adequate venues for attempts on the world land speed record. As record breaking speeds approached 150 mph (240 km/h), the requirements for acceleration to top speed before the measured mile and safe braking distance afterwards meant that a smooth, flat, straight surface of at least 5 miles (8.0 km) in length was needed. The first person to use Pendine Sands for a world land speed record attempt was Malcolm Campbell. On September 25, 1924 he set a world land speed record of 146.16 mph (235.22 km/h) on Pendine Sands in his Sunbeam 350HP car Blue Bird.

Four other record breaking runs were made on Pendine Sands between 1924 and 1927; two more by Campbell, and two by Welshman J. G. Parry-Thomas in his car Babs. The 150 mph (240 km/h) barrier was decisively broken, and Campbell raised the record to 174.22 mph (280.38 km/h) in February 1927 with his second Blue Bird.

On March 3, 1927 Parry-Thomas attempted to beat Campbell’s record. On his final run while travelling at about 170 mph (270 km/h) the exposed drive chain broke and partially decapitated him; Babs went out of control and rolled over. Parry-Thomas was the first driver to be killed during a world land speed record attempt. This was the final world land speed record attempt made at Pendine Sands.

Parry-Thomas’ car Babs was buried in the sand dunes near the village of Pendine. In 1969 Owen Wyn Owen, an engineering lecturer from Bangor Technical College, sought and received permission to excavate Babs. Over the next 15 years he restored the car, which is now housed in the Museum of Speed in Pendine village.

In 1933 Amy Johnson and her husband, Jim Mollison, took off from Pendine Sands in De Havilland DH.84 Dragon G-ACCV ‘Seafarer’ to fly non-stop to New York. Blown off course, they landed down-wind in the dark at Bridgeport, Connecticut after flying for 39 hours over a distance of 3,300 miles at an average speed of 85 mph, overshot, and were both seriously injured in the crash.

During the Second World War the Ministry of Defence acquired Pendine Sands and used it as a firing range. The beach is still owned by the Ministry of Defence; prominent signs warn of the dangers of unexploded munitions and public access is restricted. Monday to Friday part of the beach is closed off because of MOD operations.

In June 2000 Don Wales, grandson of Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell, set the United Kingdom electric land speed record at Pendine Sands in Bluebird Electric 2, achieving a speed of 137 mph (220 km/h).

Top Gear filmed a review as part of the fifth episode of their fourth season, and returned to film a second review for the first episode of the fifth season. Scrapheap Challenge used the beach as the venue for the challenge in Season 10, Episode 1, aired in 2008.

Today Pendine Sands is sometimes used as a stage in rally car events, although spectator access is limited for safety reasons. It is also a popular venue for kite buggying and homebuilt hovercraft.

Between 9 July 2004 and May 2010 all vehicles were banned from using Pendine due to safety concerns, however since May 2010 cars have again been allowed access.

DIRT QUAKE

Dirt Quake is an awesome event for anyone to attend if they have a motorcycle,  this is held on the Eastern side of the United kingdom in a town called Kings Lynn in Norfolk. This is the flatland part of the UK and how do I know that, I went to school in the next county in Suffolk and used to go to Kings Lynn to watch the speedway there as I was an Ipswich witches fan and they were rival teams, the Kings Lynn Knights were their name but changed back to their original 50’s name the Stars.

So, in this quaint Saxon town you can now hear the rumble of a different tune, and thats road motorcycles in a cool event aptly named Dirtquake.

Below is the trailer for Dirtquake 2 but then we have shots that I have taken from the internet, via face book and the bike shed back home in the UK  and also friends sent me some pics  to try and show what goes on there.

We need it here in So-Cal as it would be a blast, no attitude, just fun.

Enjoy!

Dirtquake 3 has just finished and they had a great time, along with The Ilse Of Man Marvel “Guy Martin” has a go and enjoys it.

Use any bike and get some good tires and have a go.

So just some cool photos and vids to look at today to help you through the Hot times here that we are having weather wise.

There are some really cool photos that I saw on The bike Shed and Facebook and just thought that you may not have seen them and to try and keep you lot updated as to what goes on back in the UK and all over the globe for that matter in the Motorcycle fraternity.

I really like this event as nobody cares what you look like, its to have fun and in fact, they encourage you to go out on a limb and just have fun.
