El Mirage this weekend – Hope to see you there.

SCTA returns to El Mirage looking for records

May 16, 2014 11:42 PM

Do you have a need to see some speed?

The Southern California Timing Association can help this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday at El Mirage Dry Lake, SCTA is putting on the first of six land speed racing events.

Depending on the vehicle count and how well they handle the elements, drivers may have up to six or seven opportunities to set world records in different types of cars and motorcycles — old and new — with different sized engines. Drivers from as far away from Sweden and Norway are signed up to participate.

One car takes off at a time to challenge the 1.3-mile dirt straightway on the west end of the dry lake. High Desert Racers president Tom Foley said they’re expecting at least 100 vehicles to enter.

Car inspections were held from Friday afternoon and there was a rookie driver orientation afterward.

“If you’re a rookie, we don’t just turn you lose on the lake bed,” Foley said. “You have to go through inspection. Basically if you turn to the right you have a broken vehicle. If you turn to the left you have a normal return. It’s a good thing to turn to the left, but you can’t go out of bounds and you lose all your points. Safety, of course.”

Racing begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

To participate, drivers must be a member of a racing club affiliated with the SCTA at El Mirage, or they can compete as a guest. Guest times will be unofficial, and guests can only compete if their vehicle passes the safety check, Foley said.

Foley, a Phelan resident, holds land speed records at El Mirage in the 1350cc engine vintage motorcycle sidecar gas and fuel divisions.

SCTA sanctioned events at El Mirage will also be held June 22, July 13, Sept. 14, Oct. 19 and Nov. 8-9.

It costs $15 per carload per day to enter the lake area and it doesn’t cost any extra for camping.

C.J. Daft can be reached at christiand@vvdailypress.com or at 760-951-6275.

The great thing about El Mirage is this has been a place to go fast since before WW2, many people have been here to ride motorcycle, drive hot rods and even landing a plane, I have been involved in many photo shoots here, as well as some TV documentary’s, this place is oozing with History.

So, get yourself down to El Mirage as just to see the cars and bikes getting ready to run the dry lake is awesome and probably the only place other than Bonneville that you can get right next to the machines for a closer peek at what drives people to come here from all over the globe.

Maybe next year we shall build something to run, but for now I just love the atmosphere and the chance that someone may even break a world record at the dry lake.

Be there to see the start at 7:30am it gets hot, so be prepared with plenty of liquids and wear a hat.

a head turner.

SIDEBURN ROYAL ENFIELD BULLET

Royal Enfield Bullet

By  | Sideburn Magazine

After 50 years of production in India, Royal Enfield had worked hard to update their range, first with a unit construction engine, then fuel injection and after all that the only thing on Sideburn magazine’s mind was making the 2009 Bullet Classic look like a mid-‘60s flat track racer.

Only half the frame and the engine remains from the original bike that was supplied to Sideburn by UK Royal Enfield specialists, Watsonian-Squire.

Lots of parts came from friends. Or we already had them, and were waiting for the right bike to come along. The alloy tank was custom-made for a friend’s dirt track race bike, but he was never happy with it, so we bought it for a fraction of having one made. The Bimota YB9 triple clamps and Paoli forks were £120 off eBay.

The wheels, Excel 19-inch rims with Honda CRF450 hubs and Maxxis tires, were bought from a friend who was selling his dirt tracker. The tractor headlight was a gift; so was the bobbed Indian Sport Scout rear mudguard and the rear four-piston Performance Machine caliper.

Royal Enfield Bullet
The hardtail loop is by David Bird from Lowbrow Customs, but we had Co-Built shorten the bottom rail to retain the stock wheelbase. Co-Built also made the stainless exhaust.

CFM of Lincolnshire, UK, did a great job of making all the very disparate parts fit together, fabricating brackets, footrest hangers; finding used Japanese master cylinders, switchgear and footpegs on the cheap; repositioning the battery; making the rear fender struts; cutting down the original twin seat and converting it to act as a sprung saddle. Steve Adams then covered it with a panel of real stingray skin.

Royal Enfield Bullet
The biggest challenge was converting the ignition to work with the Mikuni carb, rather than fuel injection. EFI is good, but we really wanted a simple loom and no fuel pump for this bike. Rupe’s Rewires made the loom.

When this bike was built there was no off-the-shelf kit to convert the ignition from EFI, like there is now, but CFM worked it out. The brake discs were special orders from Discacciati in Italy.

The final touch was the Ornamental Conifer paintwork on the blue base, one of the first customer bikes he painted.

Royal Enfield Bullet
The bike has competed in Sideburn’s Dirt Quake event twice, finishing on the podium in the Street Tracker class both times.

I’m in an Italian magazine this month.

Always great to be in any media to be honest- but was stoked to be in Riders magazine in Italy, as they are sure passionate about their Motorcycles and industry.

So to have an article about me in that that rag is so cool, this is a top quality magazine and many people have been featured like Rossi, Roberts and so many of my icons, so to see this really made my day and cannot thank them enough for coming to see me.

We get media from all over the globe visit us and have photo shoots with people from Helmet companies to high Fashion magazines, so we must be doing something right?

I remember them flying out to see me and they had an interpreter and we had a fun day chatting and taking photographs.

RUSS COLLINS, A legend with CB750’s PASSES AWAY!

So sad to hear the news of my hero Russ Collins passing away, I was gobsmacked when I heard ten minutes ago, this guy was an icon of mine and many around the world, he may be gone but NEVER forgotten. RIP Russ!

If you are into CB750 Honda’s, then you would of heard of Russ Collins.

Russ Collins

Russ Collins was one of the leading motorcycle drag racers and drag bike builders of the 1960s and ‘70s.

He was a hero of mine and got to see that bike run over in the UK, and now there is a documentary about him and of course the Sorcerer triple engined CB750 SOHC Drag bike, that is now going to be restored.

Born in New Jersey 1939, he was into anything mechanical and his interest in cars lead him to be an accomplished car mechanic and a body man, he later get into trucking business and drove around the country. He fell in love with California and moved there.

He became a shop manager and a mechanic in motorcycle dealerships. While there, Honda unveiled the revolutionary CB750 Four and he got one to play with.
Collins built a four-into-one exhaust system that a lot of Honda owners wanted, so in 1970 he quit his job at the motorcycle dealership and opened RC Engineering, which later became a leading maker of racing fuel-injection systems for Japanese-made sports cars.

What I like about him most is that he was radical in the drag racing scene; he was racing the new Japanese machines while everyone was on the normal British or American-made drag bike of the time. Collins also showed up in sporting colorful red, white and blue leathers when everyone was in all black leather suits.

He built “Assassin”, a fuel injected, supercharged 400hp CB750 and kicked ass in smaller class. so decided to compete in Top Fuel and had some success. But the biggest problem he faced in Top Fuel was a huge displacement disadvantage compared to the big Harley-Davidsons and Triumphs.

He decided to put 3 CB750 engines together. The machine, he named “Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe “– named in honor of the famous railroad line of the late 1800s. The three-engine Honda was featured in bunch of motorcycle and drag racing publications and was probably the most famous drag bike of the 1970s. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe set numerous records and Collins rode it to the first seven-second quarter-mile turned on a motorcycle in Ontario, California, in 1973. It even became the first motorcycle to win NHRA’s coveted “Best Engineered Car” award at the Springnationals in 1973

Check out this awesome page below.

[ho40.jpg]
The bike was so powerful and heavy that it proved to be very hard to control and in 1976 the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe was destroyed in a horrendous accident in Akron, Ohio. The crash nearly killed Collins and put him in the hospital. He must have realized how ridiculous the bike was, so petitioned for banning 3 engine drag racers. But as a true grease monkey, while recuperating, he dreamed up V8 engine out of four cylinder Honda motors.

[ho46.jpg]
The bike he named “the Sorcerer” featured dual Honda 1,000cc engines. This bike won a second “Best Engineered” award for RC Engineering and proved to be the fastest motorcycle ever built by the company. Collins ran a record-setting 7.30 second/199.55 mph run on the Sorcerer. That record stood for an astonishing 11 years. Collin still lives in LA area and runs the RC engineering and was inducted in AMA Motorcycle of Hall of fame in 1999.

Russ Collins built the ‘Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe’ drag bike with 3 nitromethane-powered CB750 engines in 1973. It nearly killed him three years later.

I have never met Russ Collins but seeing as he is not too far from me, I am going to phone him and ask if I can at least say hello.

A DAY AT THE RACES, GREAT TIMES AT IRWINDALE

A Day at the Races, here we are at Irwindale Drag way for the NHRA SUMMIT series and boy what a nice day it turned out to be in Southern California.

Great Photos by Adam LaVelle of Loose Nut Photography.

Here we are with Gold Star Racing groups 2 top Motorcycles care of Kawasaki and sat on the track at Irwindale Sunday.

The date was pulled early so not as big as a turn out as we hoped but some balls to the wall racing that’s for sure, Irwindale had the Summits series on and this was a points meet and everyone needs them.

Now this time is great as Dakota Kai Sun and his Dad Aaron ” Twist the Wrist” Pine- were at some point going to race each other and now both on Identical machines, just different colors.

The day started of well with the bikes performing as they should, with clearly Mav Tv- Lucas oil, Penske Shocks,  Muzzy Exhaust systems,Shinko Tires working at their very best.

A little bit of wear on Dakotas Clutch after the 3rd run caused a little bit of concern but between the Bronze star racing group and friends etc shouting advise from afar- they got the job done.

Dakota Ran well and we knew at some point the heads up would be Father and Son, of which they have done many times, but this time on the same machines, same power and same attitude.

Dakota ran hard and fast and I thought he had doe it by belting across the line, but unfortunately ran a 100th to fast, it was a super race though and Bronze Racing came through anyway so it was not a loss.

But what a great sight to see, the Son and the old man having a go on the track and both going for the gold.

Aaron ” Twist the wrist ” Pine went onto the Semi finals with Dave the Mad man Miller, these guys are faster than a thief running off with a TV and boy what a great race this turned out to be and Aaron getting the win.

These guys are great, everyone has fun when its time and gets serious when on the tarmac but sure is great for the likes of me- a mere spectator to watch these bikes roar down the track in mid 5 second passes.

Aaron warms the rear tire up for his run in the final, temperature was starting to get up and he wanted to get this out of the way, there was some down time as there was oil on the track so a long wait for the green to go.

Winner- Winner Chicken Dinner! Aaron ” Twist of the Wrist” pine takes the Win, Dakota is still the points leader and the lads from Bronze Star Racing group could not be prouder. Thanking Kawasaki Motorcycles, MTC,  Penske Shocks, Muzzy Exhaust systems, Lucas Oil Products inc and Shinko Tires, for giving them the opportunity to show the NHRA SUMMIT series what they all about.

Come out to see the lads race, its a fun atmosphere and you get close to all the action, support your local races as these are wear Champions are made.

Dakota Races at Irwindale on Sunday! Come watch him Race.

Irwindale Event Center Dragstrip is the place to race!

Tomorrow Dakota will be at Irwindale Drag strip, and as right now he is the points leader, we shall be cheering him on even more to accomplish his goals that he has set out for, the last 2 meets Dakota had at irwindale, he won- so lets hope this will be a ti-fecta for him. Come on 7111, we know you are capable, lets hope track conditions are perfect for him.  his Grandpa is Crew chief  ( Bob Pine )- and makes sure everything is all set for the lad to hit the loud button when he gets on the track.

Dakota Kai Sun is racing against his pops too- Aaron Pine, and this time, they are both racing on the same model machines, ZRX1400, Aaron’s is in Blue and Dakota is in Red, these will be a good match up as pretty much set up the same.

Aaron will be on his ZRX racing for the first time, as this is a brand new machine and will be great to see how the bike dials in at the track, he had a few runs on Thursday and hopefully all will be well.

I want to thank Lucas oil, Mav Tv, Muzzy, Penske Racing Shocks, Shinko Tires for giving these guys the chance to show what they are made of, They Both race for the Bronze star racing group and Both have become Champions with them, so- this must be a great formula.

Dakota Kai Sun is only 19 and I am sure that people all around the drag Racing fraternity will know his name sooner or later and can get to race all around the USA, he is from a racing Family, as i said, his dad races the same model bike and a Gixer too in mid 5’s, and now , Dakota’s little brother Gavin pine is racing mini dragster series and he won his first event last meet too, rare to have that these days and we all welcome any support for them.

So- if you can make it out to Irwindale on Sunday, come and give Dakota a shout and a wave as he rides his Bronze star Racing group Kawasaki ZRX 1400 up the strip to a win.

I shall be there with his Mum Jennifer ( my Girlfriend)  and we shall be posting about how the event goes through out the day on Facebook too.

Send positive thoughts and be great if we see ya there, Go Kota Kai!!!!!

 photo 013_zpscccee9aa.jpg

I do not know how many miles is on this machine as it has No gauges, we were going to run a GPS speedometer on it, but it runs great and I know that someone can either put it back on the road, or have a fun track bike or even a Drag bike, this is a very fast and powerful machine. the gears and clutch work fine as do the lights etc, this will be a super ride for someone out there and you will turn heads once you have some exhausts and a seat cover etc.

I would love to finish it but- My workload has overfilled and I must move a few things, so my loss your gain.

  • A cafe racer (/ˈkæff reɪsər/kaff racer) or (Ca-phay racer), is a term used for a type of motorcycle, as well as the motorcyclists who ride them. Both meanings have their roots in the 1960s British rocker or ton-up boy subculture, although the type of motorcycles were also common in Italy, France and other European countries. The term, which originally arose as an insult from motorcycle enthusiasts towards riders who they thought were playing at being a road racer but merely parked outside cafes, refers to a style of motorcycles that were and are used for fast rides from one transport cafe or coffee bar to another.

Just a neat look at a cool early Cb350 with Drum front brake .

Captures everything right.

Great detail he has shown on the Motor too.

I only wish I could do this on a computer or my Mac.

Brilliant job Dave I am well impressed with what you can do.

This is how he does it below.
