This is a bike that actually made me stop, not say a word and take a few minutes to digest this awesome Motorcycle.

This is a great bike and I love everything about the build as I am hoping to build a 883 Sporty or 750 Honda in a similar style. although I am not a smoker.

The Formula One style livery and the great Ayerton Senna autograph is a very nice touch and I was stoked to come across this design as I dig F1 stuff.

Formula one was predominantly a European spectator sport in the 1970’s and my first Café I built here was based on the JPS Formula one back in the same era.

I don’t really promote Smoking, but this Livery was in the style of the F1 and Senna was probably The BEST driver in the world, he met his demise racing.

I love the Open Megaphone that’s short, I have some twin Chrome BSA ones I may use at a later date but bet its pretty loud with no Baffle.

Not My choice of tire as Metzlers suck on the roads over here in Southern California and tend to track in the tram lines and then you are all over the place.

Other than the Tires, I love this Machine – The concept is bang on and I stopped everything I was doing when I clapped eyes on this, I sure hope that you like the look of this machine too as I am sure that there will be many Clones of this machine and many other bikes using the same color scheme.

59 Club History

 

What a great day we had on Sunday, Blue skies albeit the Sun was Baking in Anaheim, but- once we saddled up at Alea’s cafe, we headed towards the sea and I tell you, it was a welcome feeling of the cooler temperature and sea breeze as we approached Pete’s Grill on Brookhurst.

We had a nice little turn out today, about 12 came to the Cafe to meet up and it sure was nice to hear all them exhausts hitting different tones as they wound the loud button up and we headed for the freeway.

 

The ride was at a nice pace as we had some new people attend and great to meet them too, we stayed in formation and headed up the 91 to the 57 past Anaheim Angels Baseball Stadium , I moved up and down the group and so awesome to see and hear all these cool Motorcycles as we wind our way towards the beach town of Huntington.

 

 

We stopped off just down the road to get gas and bloody hell its already gone up 75 cents a gallon since yesterday, sneaky buggers!

We tend to fill up here as the freeway is about 500 yards ahead of us and easy to get to places from here when we go on a ride.

The other side is Arco but they tend to serve laquer thinner most of the time.

We all gassed up and seeing as the price of petrol is sky rocketing in So Cal, glad we were on Motorcycles.

I think Bryan below was texting the Government to say they are gouging us!

Below, I have a quick Chin wag as to where we are going, whilst everyone fuels up on this hot July day.

 

Blue Skies on this Sunday on July 12th a nice Breeze from the sea was already on its way and appreciated.

Great fun to have cool people with Mike and His Mrs leading the way.

More bikes here than KFC had nuggets.

 

I was suprised at how many bikes turned up, this is a great little meet up of which we shall attend again at some point.

Plenty of ringa Dinga Two Stokes here as well.

Something for everyone here at Huntington and sure enjoyed looking around.

 

Plenty of Triumphs about too as we take in all the fun atmosphere.

This Bonnie was clean and really nicely done.

 

Here was an Early Curtiss Arrow that would shake your fillings out!

Plenty of Brit iron here and I loved everything that was on display.

Not sure who the owner was as i wanted to ask what Chapter of the 59 Club he was in.

Now this is how I would like to find a trumpy to restore.

How many people learned to Wheelie on these?

An Almagamation of Honda’s too, there is the GCR or gerards I built a few years ago. now has over 50,000 miles on it.

Bryan’s CB650 sat in the sun and looked awesome.

Wanted to chat to this fella with his Norton but he had to dash.

 

A mixture of all brands and styles and that makes a good bike event.

Early RD bought back great memories for me.

KH kawasaki 500 were so popular back home but been 30 years since I have seen one.

Plenty of them here and loved it all.

 

You could smell the Castrol R.

Velocette was such a great time capsule here- loved to of owned this.

Love the Fishtail exhaust.

All sorts to see with many coming in and out all day.

litle harley Sprint was a rare sight to clap your eyes on.

 

Another Velocette to look at, getting hard to find these days.

Always loved their logo..

 

I wanted to buy this 305 for Jennifer.

Mach III would pull your arms off.

memory lane here, such a rare find.

Another hard to locate bike is this 400-4 Super Sport and what a great example this was.

69 trumpy was simply lovely.

Little HD was catching plenty of attention.

This guy was 75 years too late and batting for the wrong team!

Pair of Matching Triumphs come rolling in.

A motorcycle delight and so much to see and chat too.

Honda Street tacker looked fun.

Super-hawk cafe, the owner works for HONDA.

This 750 Commando was clean as hell and I would of loved to have ridden it home.

Another rare sight, the good old GT550 Suzuki.

There was a nice turn out and people were all friendly and generally took an interest in what you were riding.

Unusual Green Beemer cafe but it was Nice.

Loved this GMC Swat team special and we need one for the club, anyone got one of these we can buy?

Old customer of mine, I remember repairing the exhaust and adding tail light and signals 5 years back, great to see him still riding the SS.

All sorts of bikes were here and thats what makes it Unique and fun, plus bikes came in and out all the time.

I loved this Little Trumpy Bobber.

Heading out as the infamous Gerard on his GCR Cafe Racer rode down from Palmdale!

Always a cool collection of bikes and people and there were a few Guzzies too!

You never get to see too many CB650 Honda’s but Bryan is a Customer of mine and this bike I redid for him sounds so cool on the pipe!

 

 

So we decided to head back but via PCH seeing as there was a cool Breeze and it was great fun.

 

PCH is always busy in the Summer, especially on a weekend but nice to slow down and check the beach and sights out.

OK Fella’s, Tomorrow we meet up at Alea’s and take a cruise to the Vintage Bike Meet, should be fun, as I have not been since about 2007.

Looking forward to seeing my crew and the weather will be awesome for it, not sure which way to go yet, 57-22 then magnolia but we can figure that when we meet tomorrow.

Remember, check oil, Tire pressure, chain tension and lube it and I will see you tomorrow.

Started in June 2004 by Thomas Harper and Greg McBride as a way to get the large number of vintage machines in Orange County to be seen a little more, get a little exercise for them and a little fun for the owners. They plugged it pretty hard and got a very good turn out. The biggest turn out was a few months later with 41 vintage machines in attendance.

Originally called Vintage Bike Night, because we met on a weekday evening. This caused a problem during the winter months. Although the weather was nice enough to bring the bikes out, the daylight didn’t cooperate with many of the vintage lighting systems. For this reason, the meet was moved to Sunday afternoon.

Rebirth as “Vintage Bike OC ” August 2007

In August 2006, Joe Kagerer started attending the meets on Sunday afternoons. Anxious to help grow the group and help spread the word, he Joined just in time to find out that we had lost our domain. It had been squatted by an internet domain registry company. Not willing (or able) to pay their extortion fee to renew the Bike Night domain, he registered VintageBikeOC to host our site.

All are Welcome
Generally, “Vintage” refers to motorcycles 30 years old or older, while “Antique” refers to bikes at least 35 years old. Our group is very diverse. Anyone with an interest in vintage bikes is welcome to attend. Bring your favorite bike and show it off or your latest project and get some advice. We’ll be there between 2 & 4. Hope to see you there.

Pendine Sands Hot Rod Beach Time Trials 2015

I Many of you know me as the Cafe Racer guy, but- I am also a crazy Hot Rodder and have owned a 31 5 window A Bone, I had a 1932 3 Window Coupe and when I moved here to the States in 2000 I built a 1929 Model A on B rails.

 

But fast Forward to 2015 and they have the Time trials at Pendine Sands in Wales and boy what a turn out, over 100 Hot Rods and such warmth and Camaraderie, it will be hard to beat that anywhere around the globe, so below is just a sample of what went on via peoples photos.

I love the Traditional old style Hot Rod and hope to have another again soon.

But, Pendine sands back in the UK is a great piece of historical History that not many people know about.

Below is some History and information you may like to know.

 

In the early 1900s the sands were used as a venue for car and motor cycle races. From 1922 the annual Welsh TT motor cycle event was held at Pendine Sands. The firm flat surface of the beach created a race track that was straighter and smoother than many major roads of the time. Motor Cycle magazine described the sands as “The finest natural speedway imaginable”.

In the 1920s it became clear that roads and race tracks were no longer adequate venues for attempts on the world land speed record. As record breaking speeds approached 150 mph (240 km/h), the requirements for acceleration to top speed before the measured mile and safe braking distance afterwards meant that a smooth, flat, straight surface of at least 5 miles (8.0 km) in length was needed. The first person to use Pendine Sands for a world land speed record attempt was Malcolm Campbell. On September 25, 1924 he set a world land speed record of 146.16 mph (235.22 km/h) on Pendine Sands in his Sunbeam 350HP car Blue Bird.

Four other record breaking runs were made on Pendine Sands between 1924 and 1927; two more by Campbell, and two by Welshman J. G. Parry-Thomas in his car Babs. The 150 mph (240 km/h) barrier was decisively broken, and Campbell raised the record to 174.22 mph (280.38 km/h) in February 1927 with his second Blue Bird.

On March 3, 1927 Parry-Thomas attempted to beat Campbell’s record. On his final run while travelling at about 170 mph (270 km/h) the exposed drive chain broke and partially decapitated him; Babs went out of control and rolled over. Parry-Thomas was the first driver to be killed during a world land speed record attempt. This was the final world land speed record attempt made at Pendine Sands.

Parry-Thomas’ car Babs was buried in the sand dunes near the village of Pendine. In 1969 Owen Wyn Owen, an engineering lecturer from Bangor Technical College, sought and received permission to excavate Babs. Over the next 15 years he restored the car, which is now housed in the Museum of Speed in Pendine village.

In 1933 Amy Johnson and her husband, Jim Mollison, took off from Pendine Sands in De Havilland DH.84 Dragon G-ACCV ‘Seafarer’ to fly non-stop to New York. Blown off course, they landed down-wind in the dark at Bridgeport, Connecticut after flying for 39 hours over a distance of 3,300 miles at an average speed of 85 mph, overshot, and were both seriously injured in the crash.

During the Second World War the Ministry of Defence acquired Pendine Sands and used it as a firing range. The beach is still owned by the Ministry of Defence; prominent signs warn of the dangers of unexploded munitions and public access is restricted. Monday to Friday part of the beach is closed off because of MOD operations.

In June 2000 Don Wales, grandson of Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell, set the United Kingdom electric land speed record at Pendine Sands in Bluebird Electric 2, achieving a speed of 137 mph (220 km/h).

Top Gear filmed a review as part of the fifth episode of their fourth season, and returned to film a second review for the first episode of the fifth season. Scrapheap Challenge used the beach as the venue for the challenge in Season 10, Episode 1, aired in 2008.

Today Pendine Sands is sometimes used as a stage in rally car events, although spectator access is limited for safety reasons. It is also a popular venue for kite buggying and homebuilt hovercraft.

The Future of Cafe Racers back in 1980

Hey Every body,

OK- on this Sunday just a quickie but if anyone used to watch the one eyed monster back in 1980 and remembers Battlestar Gallactica, then you may remember this scene, I certainly did, was this the Future of Cafe Racers I thought?  ha ha

Below is a few original photos and credits I thought I would share with you all this Sunday.

 

The Model Shop was on such a tight schedule, they were designing, building, and painting the three motorcycles at the same time. Patterns for some parts were being carved in foam while other finished parts were being painted. The model crew was working on a half motorcycle when time ran out and the effects crew simply cut a finished motorcycle in half. Production waits for no one. The base motorcycle was a Yamaha MX 175. It was bought from North Hollywood Yamaha by Richard Bennett in 1979.

These were just Little MX bikes re built for a futuristic look, back in 1980 I thought they were cool.

New Visor with in Built Turn Signals

A firm has just entered the final stages of the Dyson Awards thanks to this visor with lights and inbuilt indicators.

Blink hopes to increase rider safety by making the indicators more visible than usual, and by ‘humanising’ the rider thanks to a small light which illuminates the rider’s face.

The helmet visor looks to solve two problems; firstly, it helps make the rider and their intentions more visible. Some times with bikes the leaning angle obscures the indicators which makes it hard for other motorists to see you at a glance. The visor indicators are less likely to be obscured and they add another set to the bike. Secondly, it helps to humanise the rider, bikers don’t always have the best reputation with car drivers, which makes it easy for them to be seen as a faceless group, particularly since all the safety gear obscures the person. This visor slightly illuminates the riders face helping to remind drivers that it is a real person riding the bike.

The helmet visor gives the motorcyclists a third more visible set of indicators which wirelessly connect and integrate with the existing motorcycle indicator electronics. The indicator controller sends a signal that sensors in the visor pick up telling it when to indicate. It allows more light to shine from the motorcycle improving the visibility of the rider and making them more eye catching. The design is aimed at sports bike riders so will easily fit into that market. This product is compatible with many helmets.

Antique Nationals at Fontana was a Blast to watch and be a part of.

The Antique nationals Annual event seemed to come around real fast this year, but it was not to disappoint as many cool Hot Rods turned up for this Classic meet up and Jennifer and I headed out about 10am to get to Fontana Drag strip to watch some of these Nostalgic machines run the 1/4 Mile. DSC01265 The A-Bone was a great looking ride and the owner had had this for many many years, having a Hoped up 4 Banger is such a rare sight these days and glad to see it. DSC01264 It had some later parts like Alternator and a Thermo fan but this car runs and runs very well indeed. DSC01267 Three Hungry Birds sat on that Early Cragar intake and made sure that this 4 Banger had plenty of Motion lotion to get up the track in a good fast time. DSC01268 I loved the dash cluster and rebuilt Gauges made sure that these all gave a correct reading out in Fontana as it was almost 100 degree’s here today. DSC01263 I am not a fan of 4 bar set ups but loved the hairpins and steelies for this 1929 Roadster on stock rails too. DSC01262 Early style roof gave it that early 50’s look and running a Quick change really does make this Roadster get up and go !!! DSC01269 I loved the Original License plate with the Glass 1939 teardrop lights, this Rumble seat Roadster was a sure cool piece of History out here. DSC01382 This Girly put her Roadster together a few years ago now and with the Caddy mill it made that awesome throaty roar as it roared up the tarmac. DSC01389 Blown Model A Pick up sure got down the strip in a fast ET and surprised a lot of people. DSC01390 Squeak Bell the Kiwi from Bakersfield bought out his awesome 40 Ford Coupe, I loved this ride, pure 50’s Nostalgia all the way through. DSC01392 This little Model T Roadster came down from Arizona, he ran a 302ci Ford and Jenn and I sat in this and felt like giants in it. DSC01393 Many Gassers were here for the day and loved to watch them go down the strip as the weather was humid but great for watching them fly up the 1/4 mile. DSC01395 What a Great match up we had here, I call it the Double A challenge, Roadster Pick up and the flamed A- Bone hit the strip and ran even all the way. DSC01397 It was fun hearing these 4 Bangers wind up as they get off the line and am surprised as to how they flew up the strip and sounded awesome. DSC01398 Plenty of 4 Banger Machines to entertain the crowd today and a rare sight to see at one time, sure glad we made the trip to watch these race each other. DSC01405 How can you not like the Gasser wars? These are always a blast to watch and to hear as these bad boys tear it up at Fontana . DSC01406 Loved seeing this 56 Wagon tear it up at the strip and a very cool set up this was, a rare sight these days. DSC01271 Hubba Hubba! Check this Roadster out- other than the tires I would of left it as it was, a real History machine that was a trip to look over. DSC01273 Have a look at this 4 Banger, how cool would it be to find one of these engines these days and then take it up the strip and then after, drive home, Very Cool. DSC01272 Some serious Tin here and not many like this around anywhere these days. DSC01274 There seemed to be plenty of early Cragar equipped Motors here today but it is run by the Four Banger Club but a rare treat to see all this together. DSC01276 Plenty of engine variations to look at here and had a great time chatting to all the owners etc and asking them about their machines. DSC01277 DSC01278 The weather stayed humid but lucky the Sun was shielded with low clouds, and that made for a great day of racing and pretty good for the spectator. DSC01279 Awesome 32 Three Window Deluxe Coupe as this Fully Fendered ride headed down to the staging lanes to run with the other flatheads. DSC01280 5 window sits ready for the next round with steelies and spindle mounts, a very tough Coupe and an aggressive stance. DSC01281 Three Very different rides sit here by the Drag strip, Blown 29 Roadster, Stock Model T and an old Hudson Hornet. DSC01284 A very clean and well built Roadster, complete with hairpins and Drilled I- beam and moons discs looked the part here at Fontana Strip. DSC01285 Something for everyone here and we had a fun day chatting to the owners and finding out some info on their rides and where they got them from. DSC01287 Yes please to this Roaster, I would change tires and shocks and rake the windshie3ld but, that’s my preference a solid car and loved it. DSC01289 This 24 Stud Flatty was powered with Early Edmunds heads and intake Manifold with what looks like REDS headers, cool Motor for sure. A wicked Roadster with the right look and a sweet firewall and grill shell too, very much wanted to take this home with me. DSC01292 I could not stop looking at this and when they drove it around, the flatty sounded tough, just a really Nostalgic ride for me. DSC01293 A super Clean 5 window that was also popular here at the strip. DSC01294 Plenty of Rare tin to look at here at Fontana and these three cruised about all day. DSC01350 Another set of Gassers and this certainly took your breathe away as he hit the loud pedal on the Line today!DSC01351 The Antique nationals is such a good event as it lets you get so close to all the cars and the action too.DSC01368 Below, the staging lanes with all the rides getting ready to compete into the next round.   DSC01369   The weather was great later in the afternoon with a little breeze and plenty to look at as we walked around the staging lanes and Pitts.DSC01371 More cars coming down to the staging lanes as we walk around and enjoy the atmosphere at Fontana. DSC01379   Plenty to watch, hear and small as these vehicles raced all day and we loved it all as such a great atmosphere here every year..DSC01380 We need more of this event to watch every style of Hot rod take to the strip as it so much fun to watch or take part in. DSC01387   Pick up or Coupe, there was something for everyone here and could not get enough of this today. DSC01389 Maybe Next year I shall have my own Roadster and see how I fare with other like minded Hot Rodders. DSC01328 Above is a super Nice Stepside I would love as a shop truck.   DSC01329 This 4 Banger A Bone was pretty cool other than the color and graphics but a tight Hot rod and sure was fun to see. DSC01330 The good thing about the Antique Nationals is that you can get and look at the rides close up and everyone is friendly. DSC01331 This ole fella had his Hudson Gasser all about ready to take up the strip. DSC01332 Always nice to have a flip front to be able to get to the Motor and this was a well put together machine and sounded great. DSC01333 This was indeed built for speed and he had great fun this weekend at the track. DSC01334 Another cool Shop truck and nicely done, always great to see these at the Drags and sometimes they even run them against each other too. DSC01335 The Little T that could, this was a low slung ride and driven daily too, up for grabs as well. DSC01336 Traditional 50’s styled A- Bone stood out, I mean, you cant miss them Pete and Jake style flames. But a great little roadster and I know that I would have fun with it and I am sure that you would do too. DSC01337 Every year there is always different rides that attend this show and I love talking to folk around the Pitts to see where they are from and something about their machine, it makes for an interesting and sometimes entertaining conversation. His Beer barrel grilled pick up was cool. DSC01338 Plenty of people were here to race and to have fun an this was a fun ride to watch this weekend and did not hang about. DSC01339 A lonely Roadster sits on the Tarmac awaiting its time, sits low being channeled and I loved it with red Oxide primer an all.   DSC01341 This little A-Bone Roadster was super cool and so was the owner, 4 banger power with AK Miller parts, this will run all day and never get hot. DSC01342   I saw plenty of Ak Miller parts this weekend and love seeing cool stuff like that, this Roadster is daily driven in all weather and super nice owner. DSC01343 A fun little A- Bone that he gets many many miles of smiles from and I am envious in a good way, great to see and chat too. DSC01349 This guys doesnt give a flying Duck- loved the tear drop trailer with it, super tidy combonation. DSC01348 A lot of time and money have gone into this ride and boy can you tell, this was so clean, yet he drives it to many places. DSC01347   A very cool set up and never an issues in the time he has had it, just a well built machine and fun to see today. DSC01344 Cruising down to the Staging area to check out the rest of the rides. DSC01345 Resto’s were very clean and all of them run like a top.   DSC01346 Something for everyone if you come to the Antique nationals and we had a brilliant time here. DSC01354 A walk around the Pitts shows all sorts of amazing machines and this Black Three window caught my eye, its a really ride. DSC01356 1932 was a great year for the Automotive industry, being the First V8 Fathead too, love these rides. DSC01355 Great Girder front end on this Whizzer and a few raced this weekend too. DSC01357 Super Nice Bowtie Step Side work truck, love these things and sits well on 5 spokes. DSC01358 Jenn and I sat in the Little Channeled Roadster, I was half hanging out of it but a fun ride and a super nice owner from Arizona. DSC01359   Mid engine Flatty in this push truck looked great. DSC01360 Two Door 50 Coupe was such a nice clean ride. DSC01361 I would of loved to have driven this today even had a push bar on the arse for the drags or dry lake. DSC01362 Every where we looked there were Flattys blappng about the place. DSC01363 A few Cushmans turned up too and ran like 35 seconds on the 1/4 and fun to watch race.   This 5 window was heading out to the staging lanes and runs super well, DSC01365   More stuff to look and listen out for as we walked around at Fontana. DSC01400 There goes the Cushman- Flat out at 40mph.     DSC01401 Whizzer and Harley go at it, thats fair right?   We had an awesome time, and look forward to next year, hopefully see some of you out there too?

TEX SMITH’s Final trip – What a legend in Hot Rod History

Former Associate  HOT ROD magazine editor and publisher Charley Roy Ugama Waya Golaneeda, known around the automotive hobby as LeRoi “Tex” Smith, passed away on June 11 in Australia, where he had lived during the last years of his life. Smith was an icon of the hot rodding sport, but was always involved with all types of old cars and old car events.

Clarence LeRoi ‘Tex’ Smith was born in Cleveland, Oklahoma, to Esther Mae Welch on Jan. 4, 1934. Later, he took the name of his stepfather, Carlos Debs Smith. Tex was of Cherokee and Choctaw heritage. He was a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and the Cherokee Band of North Carolina. His Great Grandfather and Great-Great Grandfather were principal chiefs of the Eastern Band of Cherokee.

 

Tex was trained in tribal culture by his grandfather, Charley Welch. In the 1960s, he became very active in tribal and national Native American affairs. On occasion, Tex was commissioned to write articles and conduct public relations forums for other Indian tribes.

Tex stayed in Oklahoma until he was six. In 1940, he went to Texas and then to California in a typical “Okie” search for better jobs for his dad. His stepfather was a craftsman skilled in many trades. He worked in oil fields in the Bakersfield, California, area and then moved to Washington, where he became an interior carpenter on World War II Navy PT boats. Carlos then became a journeyman auto body and paint expert in northern California. During this time, Tex rarely attended one school for more than three months. The family moved to Rexburg, Idaho, in 1949. Tex graduated from Madison High School there in 1951.

Tex was a supporter of the first Bonneville Salt Flats speed trials sanctioned by the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA). He crewed for Lee Wooley’s Buick coupe in 1952. Also in the ‘50s, he raced a ‘32 Ford coupe with a flathead. Tex remained a fixture in land speed racing, most prominently as a journalist.

 

Tex continued to develop his interest in specialty cars (hot rods and circle track racers) during the early years of those sports in Southern California. In this period, he worked closely with the legendary Wally Parks on development of the National Hot Rod Association. Over the years, Tex served as NHRA’s international Ambassador, European Director and National Field Director, working out of a Hollywood office. He formulated and directed the activities of NHRA drag racing, created the International Car Club Association for NHRA, and developed programs related to driving sports cars in European races and rallies.

After one year at Idaho State College and one year at Ricks College in the early postwar years, Tex signed a contract to play professional baseball in St. Louis, but he was then drafted into military service during the Korean conflict. He was selected to attend the U.S. Air Force’s cadet program and graduated as a Lieutenant specializing in piloting single-engine jet fighters.

The Air Force provided Tex with further training as a Personnel Officer. He was assigned to bases in France and Germany, but left the service in 1957 via an early-out program to accept job as Associate Editor at Hot Rod magazine in Los Angeles. He then took additional college courses at Montana State University, but left just prior to graduation to return to Hot Rod.  “I was already in a career that I thought I needed to finish college to get a career in,” he once told us.

 

 

Tex left Hot Rod in 1964 to launch a successful free-lance writing career. He expanded into writing books for various New York publishers including Dodd, Mead & Co. during the ‘60s.  He wrote on wide range of activities, specializing in sports of interest to men — boating, aircraft and cars.

Tex wrote a book called We Came In Peace, a look at America’s first moon landing. He created an outline for a popular outdoors TV show, did magazine promotions for Boy Scouts of America, undertook public relations writing for the White Mountain Apache Tribe and, from the ‘60s thru ‘70s, wrote many Petersen specialty automotive books.

 

 

Tex created TRM Publishing Co. as the foundation for Tom McMullen’s company. Starting in 1968, he introduced a series of successful magazines such as Street Chopper, Chopper Guide, Hot Bike and Street Rodder. Tex also helped put Tom Medley’s Rod & Custom magazine into the mainstream as the voice of the emerging “street rod” movement. He also did much to generate direction for what was a fast developing new aspect of hot rodding in that era.

 

 

In 1979, Tex moved to Iola, Wisconsin, to become editor of Old Cars Weekly and was almost immediately promoted to publisher for all of parent company Krause Publications’ automotive titles. From there, he moved to Dallas, Texas, to become PR Director for Interstate Battery Co.’s Great American Race in the early days of that event. In 1985, LeRoi retired — for the first time — and relocated to Idaho to live and go trout fishing in the Teton Valley.

 

 

 

In 1987, Tex came out of retirement to start his own publishing company based around a popular magazine he created called Hot Rod Mechanix. He also developed an ever-growing line of specialty books.

 

 

LeRoi Smith retired for the second time in 1999. Following the death of his beloved wife Peggy, Tex remarried. From that point on, he split his time between homes in Idaho and Australia, with stopovers on Kauai, Hawaii.

RUBY’S CAR SHOW WE ATTENDED

What a great little venue Ruby’s diner is up in Whittier, A stones throw from where I live and thought that a trip to check this Car show out would be fun to attend and get some cool grub at the same time, seeing as it is quite light until at least 8;30 pm, we took advantage of the weather and headed out to Whittier for a great evening with my 59 Club.

Caution indeed,as we parked up and took in the sights and sounds of Ruby’s Diner and what a great selection of cool stuff they had to show us here.

How about this awesome flathead Indian Chief, I would love to have been the owner of this ride and loved everything about it, even the oil leaks!

I painted this design on My leather jacket a few decades ago now and always loved the Indian logo, what a cracking American piece of History.

I didn’t see the owner as i wanted to hear it fire up and cruise down the road, but this show is always cool to see as you never know what might turn up.

Green seemed to be a popular choice of color for many of the cars that showed up today but its a cool color none the less and loved the rides.

The fairlane below was super clean and had every factory option available o it, a sweet long and wide machine that was just nice to look at.

The Pontiac Star Chief was also a hit at the show, Big Chromed D- Cup Over riders and sat lower than a snakes belly, this was really a nice car.

The 5 spokes and Lakes pipes on that Star Chief was a nice touch too. Blew a soft green Lincoln Continental Convertible looked awesome.

Four Door Galaxy was super clean and all original trim too, this has been cherished for many years that’s for sure and I loved it.

I would of loved the Dodge Lancer as the Body work was all original and loved the paint patina, not sure where the Hood went though.

Little Canary yellow and Red 40 ford is so cool, an early owner so a Hot Rod for many years, flattys gone so now a street rod but loved it.
