A Day out with The Ton Up Boys!

Below is a great little write up  : By Rahoul Ghose | Photos: Manuel Madrid Rivera

They have a super website named. http://lamotorcyclist.com/ and here is our friend and co-creator of such websites take on the day we invited him and his Thruxton for a ride out with the 59 Club O.C. section.  make sure you save their website as its a lethora of information on rides, events, functions, tips and anything Motorcycle related, for top news and future attractions, be sure to stop by their site as its very informative and the good thing is- its right up to the minute too.

Cruising down an empty 105 at near ton up speeds towards Anaheim and a meet up with the newly incorporated 59 Club of OC, the pain of a 7am Sunday rise seems a distant memory.

Morning fog off the Pacific Ocean makes my helmet and dark tinted visor choice seem a little crazy at the outset — visibility issues aside — but now with the sun peeking through all I can think of is how smooth the ride is on Thruxton999 … rear Ohlins, fork brace, steering damper … all welcome upgrades which handle the grooved concrete nicely at high speed. A predicted hour-long excursion East is quickly looking more like 40 minutes.

The smell of the engine as it warms up — gas and oil mixed with a hint of leather – as well as the roar from my 2 into 1 Arrow, inspire me to crouch over the tank and pull a further twist on the throttle as I pass Crenshaw Blvd. The ton is done long before I have to bank onto the 605. The throaty roar of fourth gear at 7,000 RPM is ingrained in my psyche.

Since my very first bike -– a stripped-down, caféd-out Yamaha Seca 400 -– I have always preferred the racer stance clip-ons offer, and the naked look of a traditional café racer. So a day out with the Ton Up boys just seems natural … surrounded by Triumphs, Moto Guzzis and the requisite custom Honda CB750, with riders sporting their newly badged, black Fifty-Nine Club jackets.

The meet, organized by café icon and builder Steve “Carpy” Carpenter — the newly confirmed OC 59 Club prez, attracts three highly modified Thruxtons, two Thunderbirds 900s, a T100, a Moto Guzzi V7 Racer and a CB750 café racer to the Aléa Cafe, a few warehouses away from Carpy’s own Anaheim-based garage shop, and a mere hop away from the 91.

The ride –- a trip to Venice’s Deus ex Machina back in my own neighborhood, via Long Beach, San Pedro, and the beautiful coastal highway skirting the Palos Verdes peninsula -– promises some nice twists and even a few open stretches, a taste of the Long Beach Grand Prix course, and the luxury of crossing the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

There’s something very comforting, and almost primal, when you hear the dull roar of a group of café racers firing up. But it’s also the camaraderie of walking around bikes and talking upgrades, modifications, the very philosophy of café racers, stripping your bike down to the basics for better handling and performance.

For Carpy, the 59 Club is about nostalgia, but more importantly about that camaraderie, where members want to ride, help others and simply enjoy the moto lifestyle.

“If you ride a traditional old-style Classic, then that’s a big bonus … that’s what we are all about,” Carpy says, referring to the 59 Club membership requirements. “Nostalgia is a key component of the club, but not a big necessity, as long as you are into the Classic-style machines that the original 59 Club had in the day, or in the spirit of, like we are with the Bonneville, Thruxtons, and Guzzis.”

If you like motorcycles, people and promoting the club in a positive way, then joining the 59 club is as simple as attending regular events over a six-month probationary period and then going through the traditional, now 55-year-old, initiation … passing a current or past president at the Magic Ton.

Today’s excursion boasts some 90 F spring LA weather, and at least a few ‘Sunday’ drivers … no you don’t need to turn your wheel right before making a left-hand turn my mind mentally screams more than a few times as I go into avoidance mode around some four-wheelers. But then there’s the beauty of riding in small groups where people look out for one another … where traffic stops inspire off-the-cuff conversations … and passing other groups prompts a steady hail of acknowledging hand gestures.

Along Palos Verdes Drive we ride up quickly on a couple dozen Harley tour bikes in bomber-like formation, but slow down to enjoy the breath-taking coastal view. We are all heading the same way, after all. Even the stop and start routine through Redondo Beach doesn’t quash any enthusiasm.

As the ride wends to a close, we snake through beachside traffic along Vista Del Mar before the final Lincoln Blvd lane-splitting track to Deus in Venice.

Much needed coffee, more bike viewing and talk, a Roland Sands sighting … Westside moto enthusiasts greet their OC counterparts. Riders come into the Deus parking lot … groups head out, greeted by moto officers ticketing those without DOT-approved headgear. But smiles prevail. Just another Sunday in beautiful Los Angeles, the heart and soul of US motorcycling … and all before noon.

The Tiki Pool Party has become one of the major events at VLV, and will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is a great opportunity for girls (and guys!) to show off their vintage swimwear.  New to VLV18 – The Pool Party will begin early, at 9am, on Sunday!

CABANAS AT VLV

As you know, there are a limited number of cabanas at the pool for VLV and the hotel is getting a lot of requests so here is the plan. A cabana for Friday, Saturday or Sunday will be $250 for a day. That includes guaranteed entry to the pool area for 10 people. Between now and March 8th please send an email to cabana@vivalasvegas.net On that day we will randomly draw winners who will then be able to phone the hotel and deal with the payment.

Don’t forget that the pool party will be for 3 days this time and you will automatically be entered into the drawing for all 3 days. The hotel also hopes to have even more cabanas installed by then.

Please only use cabana@vivalasvegas.net for entering the draw. If you have questions please email tom@vivalasvegas.net

Below is a bunch of Music that I personally dig- you may not like it but I am sure there is at least one that you do.

I have been into this music longer than I care to even count and will never lose this passion for a bass and drum, so enjoy the following Videos.

Below is the BlueJays doing their Buddy holly style of music and do a blinding job.

Below is Jack Rabbit Slim and the killer track ” Petrolhead”

This Fella from back home in the Uk ” Dollar Bill” is I believe the best Blues Bopper sounding artist since Doctor Ross! love ALL his music. And his live performances are just brilliant.

Germanys ” Boss Hoss” is an amazing Band that has been around for many years and always sound great, here is their hot ” Jesus built my Hot Rod” recorded back in 1991.

Ronnie dawson is one of my all time favorites in the rockabily world, no longer here but I saw so many of his gigs and he was so great to watch.

Ride to Deus Ex Machina, Venice This SUNDAY March 29th

Ride to Deus Ex Machina, Venice

It is time for another great little ride and this time it will be this Sunday and we shall be leaving Alea’s cafe on Miraloma in Anaheim at 9:00am and heading to viti Deus ex machina in Venice.

I have not been to the shop yet and when I lived in Australia did go to their little workshop in 1997 and saw the cool set up they had, now 18 years later, i would like to go check them out here as they have a cool place in Venice.

I am meeting my crew at Alea’s cafe that is located at :

3371 E Miraloma Ave
Anaheim, CA
(714) 993-5198
To grab a Coffee and of course meet up with like minded people and go on a ride out to the beach side area and check the shop out, as Deus is synonymous with great Motorcycles and apparel and of course serve coffee too, so a great way to spend a few hours with like minded people.

We are the 59 Club O.C. and welcome anyone to ride along if you want to check this place out as the ride should be fun and eventful.
59 club induction

Alloy Swing Arms for Thruxtons

I have been contemplating getting these manufactured for some time now, a couple of years ago I was speaking to a company that with my input, we should be able to manufacture these to the correct specifics and standards to allow the safe use of Aluminum material and of course as these are mechanical parts I want to make sure these are stress relived and comply to all the safety codes and standards that are required.

Also, these will be made from Billet, no sections and you wil be amazed at the strength as they have a unique system that will give you the rigidity you require.

They will be made from 7075 and an Aerospace company is going to help me with the R&D to make sure that all will be safe and of course have a Perfect fit with easy maintenance etc. The R&D will be done by a friend of mine that has made swing arms for over 50 years for TT bikes, Super bikes and Motocross, so a plethora of experience, these will be top quality, the best anywhere.

There are a few companies that make these but I want them to be affordable and also to be made right here in Anaheim California, so now the work begins, but- by the response that I have received, I believe that this will be a fun adventure and I am sure that you will like the finished piece and I will of course show case it on my machine and fit to a track bike to fully test the stress and load of the swing arm to make certain we have everything dialed in.

So stay tuned to this and of course My new website  www.carpyscaferacers.com as we hope to offer many more cool parts for your British ride as well as the good old CB750 as I made them in steel before and were great.

Making affordable parts is the name of the game, I just don’t sell parts, I live this stuff, I have a passion for it, come and see me and I am more than happy to chat.

There are a few of these out there and room for my Brand too and as I have new Motorcycles and of course, now the President of the 59 Club in the O.C. – I want to make more and more parts for the Thruxton, as i ride mine a lot and have many more parts to make for it.

I have a Thruxton and have Triumphs at the shop with Royal Enfields too as well as my CB750 Honda’s, this is a fun time in the Motorcycle fraternity and I hope to continue to offer great parts at great prices. I have been doing this here in California for 15 years and continue to push the envelope for you lot.

Any input is gratefully received, help me and I help you, an easy philosophy!

I shall also be visiting Italy and some of Europe this year so some great opportunities are now becoming reality and want to share that with you, so stay tuned……………

Call me on 714-996-4597 or email me at carpy@carpyscaferacers.com and I will do my utmost to help you out.

We made the oil filler cap out of solid 6061 T6 Aluminum and then polished it.

 photo _MG_0026_zps320b04aa.jpg

Anke-Eve Goldmann – Cycle Worlds Coolest Journalist.

                                                             BIRDS ON BIKES!!!!!!!
Well, you have to admit, if you are a bloke like me, there is nothing better than seeing a Girly on a motorcycle, Black leather, curves in the right places and blasting down the road hitting the Magic Ton is something many of us have hoped to see, and now- things are indeed changing and we see more and more Birds on bikes.
Women have ridden bikes for years i know but back in the 50’s and 60’s you didnt see many on them in magazines, unless they were just modeling for the company, this now brings me to the infamous Anke- Eve Goldmann!
What a Girl, a great rider, a great looker and one of the top Journalists in motorcycling history.
Goldmann taught German to airmen’s children at a U.S. Air Force base in Germany. She was the first woman to ride a motorcycle with a one-piece leather racing suit, made for her by German manufacturer Harro. She rode BMW motorcycles and became a spokesperson for the marque before buying an MV Agusta.
Anke-Eve Goldmann was a journalist for Cycle World, Das Motorrad in Germany, Moto Revue in France and other international motorcycle magazines.

Anke-Eve Goldmann was a journalist for Cycle World, Das Motorrad in Germany, Moto Revue in France and other international motorcycle magazines.

Goldman was a friend of author André Pieyre de Mandiargues and the inspiration for the main character, ‘Rebecca’, in his most popular book The Motorcycle (1963).

The book was adapted for the 1968 film The Girl on a Motorcycle starring Marianne Faithfull. From the 1950s, she competed in endurance and circuit racing, at the Nürburgring and Hockenheimring but being a woman, was barred from higher level competitions.

In 1958, she helped found the Women’s International Motorcycle Association in Europe.

She gave up motorcycling after the death of a close friend.

At 6 feet tall, she stood out in any crowd and especially clad in Black leather, she was a natural with Motorcycles and could ride the socks off the damn thing.

This did not dissuade her from seeking fast motorcycles and race tracks; in many photographs she is hurtling down the tarmac, and mixing with other motorcyclists at Hockenheim and Nurburgring – such as here examining a Norton Manx at Nurburgring.

Her ‘pass’ at the tracks, beyond her riding ability, was a facility with writing a good story for the press, and she regularly sent racing and riding reports to Moto Revue in France, as well as publications in Spain, Sweden, Germany, the US, and Japan. Here at Hockenheim, she waits for track time with a pair of Jawa two-strokes and a Zundapp outfit – her suitcase strapped to the parcel rack of her R69.

She worked at a U.S. Air Force base, teaching German to the children of soldiers stationed there. She also spoke other languages, and her command of English was good enough to write two articles for Cycle World magazine in 1962. ‘An Invitation to a Lap Around the Nurburgring’ was published in the June issue of 1962, and a report on women racers in the Soviet Union (!) was printed in October of that year [and yes, I will definitely post it]. In this photo, noted motorcycle author Erwin Tragatsch, author of the definitive ‘Illustrated History of Motorcycles’, stands with a group visiting Anke-Eve with her late-model R69S, now with a British ‘Peel’ fairing (distinguishable by the clear panel in the nose – the headlamp is not mounted to the actual fairing, but is retained in the standard position. The clear section is elongated for a full sweep of light).

And don’t you wish your Elementary School teacher rode a motorcycle like Anke-Eve! She cut quite a figure in those drab days of the late 1950s, and had a bit of an exhibitionist streak.

find it especially interesting that Goldmann designed her own motorcycle racing leathers. Apparently she worked with German leather riding gear manufacturer Harro in designing her custom riding gear. I’m presuming there wasn’t much in the way of motorcycling gear available for women in the 50’s so she helped create her own.

The custom summer one-piece riding suit she designed had a distinctive diagonal zipper starting at the neck and angling across her upper torso. A look that is certainly current today in women’s fashion. Harro went on to manufacture her designs for public consumption.

In winter her jacket featured a wide multi-buckled belt, too large to be merely a kidney belt. Perhaps it helped keep her warm in cold temperatures. Her winter riding suit was significantly bulkier and larger than her svelte summer cat-suit, and clearly accommodated woolen under layers.

After her closest friend died in a riding accident, Anke-Eve Goldmann seems to have given up motorcycles altogether, and began to travel with a backpack to remote Asian locations. Traveling alone, she trekked through Burma, the Sunda Islands, Vietnam, and Cambodia, not many years after the conflicts there had ended.
