Old-School Black License Plates Coming to a Car Near You

The cherry on top of a classic, 1960s muscle car is the original, California black plate that it got fresh off the lot.

But because those plates were issued from 1963 to 1969, not all of them survived. They have such cache in the global car world – California cars are prized for having less rust because our weather rarely requires salted roads – that you might want one even if you have a modern vehicle.

Now’s your chance. According to the office of L.A. area state Assemblyman Mike Gatto, …

… the $50 plates are headed to the presses and will be mailed out to those who ordered them in upcoming months.

The return of the plates was a result of a Gatto bill that created the “California Legacy License Plate Program.” It also includes provisions to reproduce the yellow plates of the 1950s and the blue plates of the 1970s.

There’s no requirement that your car fit the plates’ era. However, if you want the yellows or the blues, you’ll have to wait.

The black plates quickly hit the threshold of 7,500 or more orders it takes to start production, according to a statement from Gatto’s office:

According to the DMV, the black plates, which were originally issued from 1963-1969, were among the fastest specialty plates ever to achieve the 7,500 applications necessary to be issued. The Department has therefore begun preparing for the issuance of the plates and expects to begin sending them in the months ahead to those who pre-ordered.

But that threshold has yet to be met for the yellow and blue plates.

Gatto’s people told us they’re hoping the excitement over the black plates will get car lovers charged up over the other ones too.

This time around Folsom prisoners will not be banging out and painting plates, as was the custom back in the day. Rather, the original molds will be used to create new plates (which will be thicker than regular, contemporary plates), while a machine will be used to paint them, according to a rep in the assemblyman’s office.

Gatto himself says:
California motorists are excited about classic license plates. Aside from not salting our roads, California doesn’t often do much for automobile enthusiasts. This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — A sinkhole collapsed part of the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky on Wednesday, damaging eight cars but not shutting down the building.

Museum spokeswoman Katie Frassinelli said six of the cars were owned by the museum and two — a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil — were on loan from General Motors.

Bowling Green city spokeswoman Kim Lancaster said the hole opened up at about 5:40 a.m. CST Wednesday, setting off an alarm and a call to the fire department. Frassinelli said no one was in the museum at the time.

The hole is in part of the domed section of the museum, and that area will remain closed. That’s an original part of the facility for which was completed in 1994. The fire department estimated the hole is about 40 feet across and 25 to 30 feet deep. Pictures of the sinkhole show a collapsed section of floor with multiple cars visible inside the hole. A few feet away, other Corvettes sit undamaged and undisturbed.

Frassinelli said the rest of the museum was open Wednesday.

The other cars damaged were a 1962 black Corvette, a 1984 PPG Pace Car, a 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette, a 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette, a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette and a 2009 white 1.5 Millionth Corvette.

Lancaster said information was still being gathered about what exactly happened, but it appeared to be the first problem of its kind at the property.

Bowling Green sits in the midst of the state’s largest karst region — the Western Pennyroyal area, where many of Kentucky’s longest and deepest caves run underground. A karst display distinctive surface features, including sinkholes.

No injuries were reported.

Frassinelli said a structural engineer has been called to the museum to assess existing damage and the stability of the surrounding area.

The museum is set to host the 2014 Corvette Caravan in September, a celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the museum.

Although the event is still a year away, 1,200 people already are registered for the 2014 Corvette Caravan that will mark the 20th anniversary of the National Corvette Museum. Museum officials expect car clubs from all 50 states and Canada to converge on Bowling Green for the celebration.

Bowling Green, Ky., is also the lone place where General Motors builds the iconic Corvette.

2013 Muscle car and corvette nationals

(Photos by Greg Rourke and Bob Chiluk) – The 2013 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals was once again a mind-bending experience for us. In was a gathering of muscle car unicorns, ultra-rare stuff that people had not seen in years, amazing race cars, factory freaks, and a whole lot more. From the barn find display to the amazing gathering of L-88 powered Corvettes, this show really brought together an incredible assemblage of American muscle cars from the glory days of Detroit. Our dudes Bob Chiluk and Greg Rourke spent some 26 hours at the event over the span of a couple days and shot hundreds and hundreds of photos. In order to keep you conscious and upright, we’re dropping them 50 at a whack. Any more than that and you’d simple black out or lose control of your bladder at some of the stuff in here.

One of the two Boss 429 Mercury Cougars that the factory built for drag racing was at the show, a host of Super Duty “swiss cheese” Pontiacs, and barn finds for days. We’re actually shaking our fist at Bob and Greg as we type this out of jealousy. You’ll do what we did when looking at these photos and every one the process is something like this, “Is that a….woah…”.

If we’re picking favorites, Fred Hurst’s ‘Cuda gasser is damned close to the top. All of Hurst’s cars were immaculate but we think this was his all time coolest. You need to pick your favorites now!

WHITTIER CRUISE AT RUBYS DINER

Well, Friday night and Jenn took me to the local cruise up in Whittier, and a great meeting it was.

Plenty of different vehicles to gaze at and of course spend time with my girl looking at cool Hot rod and Classics and listening to the sounds of yester year that was playing from the speakers in the parking lot.

A mixed bag of rides were there and the atmosphere so so friendly.

This cruise has been going for many moons now and I really enjoyed it, we also sat down for some cheeseburgers in Rubys Diner and enjoyed the evening.

Not often you see a Country Squire these days so a nice surprise when I saw that sitting there.

All styles of vehicles, so you know you are going to find a favorite in here, check out the rolled grill.

This is a great area to reside in and I love living here, if you ever get to these parts, check Rubys out on a Friday as there is always something there for everyone to see.

Below, “Christine’s ” cousin, this Plymouth Savoy was awesome, so big and fins that would make a shark nervous too.

This will be a cool place for us to pop in and out of on a Friday, and the good thing is that cars come in and out through out the night, so you never know what will turn up.

Plenty of Bow tie’s representing there this week.

But plenty of Henry’s rides too.

So if you dig fins and chrome, Muscle Cars, Classics and the good old Hot Rod, then this is a super fun place to hang out, grab a burger and listen to some tunes on a Friday evening.

See ya there!!!!
