Bought Home a 1977 Yamaha YZ250 MotoCross Bike

Well, ya just never know what you mind find around here in Southern California and I came across a 1977 Yellow YZ250 Yamaha at an Auction and ended up bringing her home, this old girl has sat out since the 1980’s and left to just sit and soak up the sun, well- I could not resist and the reason why is:

When me and my brother were teenagers back in the UK, we used to ride old pieces of crap just to get out in the countryside and ride, we lived near the American Airbases and often spoke to many servicemen about the USA and how cool it would be to live there etc.  We knew some American lads not far from us and one of them gave me a Dirt bike magazine, this was about 1975/6 and when we clapped our eyes on all the MotoX stuff, we were hooked.

I remember Bob Hurricane Hannah Grabbing the 250 championship on the Very same model and year as I have right now.  In 1977, Hannah hopped aboard a stock production Yamaha 250 and won the Florida Winter-AMA Series and the AMA Supercross Championship in impressive fashion, taking six of the 10 rounds. By the end of the AMA Nationals season, he was in contention for the 125cc, 250cc and Open Class titles — becoming the first rider to win races in all three classes in just one season.

Hannah would go on to win the AMA Supercross title for three straight years. Known for his tireless training regimen and fierce demeanor on race day, his tell-it-like-it-is, never-say-die attitude toward racing endeared him to hundreds of thousands of fans, and he became the first genuine superstar of Supercross racing.

So for me now to have a 1977 YZ250 is kind of surreal and I hope to be able to do it up, maybe get a top end, rebuild forks etc and maybe a D pipe etc and race the Biltwell 100 someday, maybe even find another YZ250 and get my brother to fly out here so we can race together, just another tick in the box of things we wanted to do in life.

To many, they wont get the sense of excitement over this pee yellow 250 dirt bike, but this is out teenage OMG dream of owning one and sure, I have had CR250 and XR and XL moden dirt bikes but this was the thing to look out for when you saw a race on the tv.

So I loaded the 250 up from the Auction and bought her home with a happy smile on my face, have the pink slip too which is quite rare to find these days, of course I have to see if the bike is even in one piece, I have no history of it but I do know it was parked up in the early 1980’s.

I would like to get this old girl going, I mean, she is now 46 years old, so many parts will not be available, so I shall be looking around for parts and maybe some of you reading this may even have parts in the shed for this bike as you may of owned one or Dad or Grandad did?

Today’s dirt bikes ride like cadillacs compared to the 70’s bikes but these still pulled hard and you knew you had to watch the power band when it came in, that’s the fun I think, check out the old spark plug holder and wrench on the frame.

Classic set up here, throttle Cable through the number plate, so old school its got to stay on this bike, hope I can find NOS parts for this machine.

Just thought I would share as some of you may dig this old dirt bike, I know that I do and so does my brother. Nothing quite like the smell of Castrol R oil or Spectra and will keep you posted on my new ride.

 

The Outliers Guild Motorcycle show in Los Angeles

Well this morning I loaded up the van and took the Harlequin Honda down the 5 Freeway to Los Angeles, fighting traffic all the way and then off at Seventh street, I passed a few Old style warehouses and new I was in the right area for this weekends OG show.

So, I pulled up on Anderson in the Industrial area and drove round the back where a friend of mine Donald Leonhardt was helping out and offered to give me a hand take the bike out, Cheers Don I was stoked to have help, as the 750 is no lightweight machine.

We eased the bike into the old Warehouse and there was a hive of activity, the smell of fresh paint and cut timber filled the air, along the concrete floor are a number of hand made wooden Pallet style platforms, for which the “Invited Builders” will be displaying their machines and I was lucky enough to be one of those builders.

So many cool machines had already turned up and the amount of attention to detail and engineering feats were mind boggling, Leonardo Devinci would of been right at home here, and to add to that, the building next door will be displaying cool art and design, as well as that, there were a few cool areas for Vendors. Such as Beringer Brakes, Deus, Tobbaco Motowear Co, Stellar Mo brand and many many more.

The building is a superb venue and you can look at the bikes that are on the Wooden platforms, check out the vendors upstairs etc and then walk out the building into the alley at the rear to see more Vendors, more motorcycles and yest another building where the Art show will be, so a great Horseshoe shaped event thats super easy to navigate.

Many bikes will be there, close to 100 I should think, so if you have a chance, get down to the show this weekend, it will be a fun place to be for sure. I am looking forward to see what all is on display, love seeing other bikes that have been created.

Vintage Moto X Des Nations Farleigh Castle 2017

Well, People ask if my family are into Motorcycles, My old man was and guess thats what got me and my brother into it, We had shitty bikes as a kid, what we bought with our own money but, to us they were millions dollar machines, I think it made us better riders as we had crap bikes but rode them as hard as any of our mates did on their expensive machines.

Below is My Brother  (Mike Carpenter) with his restored HONDA CR250 that he stripped to the frame a rebuilt with a buddy of his using just his spare time, such a great machine and I managed to locate some of the parts over here in the USA for him to be able to make sure all was bang on the money. I guess it does run in the family, what a killer machine.

I have been into both style, where my brothers passion was Moto X and still today at the ripe old age of 53 he is still riding and entered for the second year, the VMXDN at Farleigh Castle in Bath Somerset. Classic Japanese Cafe Racers

People know me for the CB750 Honda, and that inline four is one of the most robust motors out there, but many other Brands are just as good, the Kawasaki Z model and the infamous Suzuki GS model too.

HONDA CR500 TRACKER KIWI STYLE

I have always loved Dirt bikes as a kid, my brother mick still races when he can on his machine and I saw these photos today and had to blog about it as this is one of the Old School “Power houses ” of Muscle from back in the day.

The 1985 CR500 you see here has taken on a New guise and better for it too, as I have loved the Flat Track style of Motorcycle and it took a cool Kiwi ” Adam Hedges & Earnest Co. to come out with this Killer Diller of a machine. New Zealand builds Great cars and bikes and here is proof of Just that.

Adam hedges used to be a pro Drift racer and it seemed only natural to incorporate something into a Drifting motorcycle, so with some loot in his Hand, Adam tracked down a 1985 CR500 right from here in Southern California and shipped it back to the other side of the globe.

With his C’s Garage drift shop, he’s teamed up with his brother at Earnest Co. to try his hand at a custom tracker build. And what a build it is, it just screams Speed right from the gate.

I can so relate to these bikes as this was Me and my brothers era when it came to ultimate Moto X machines and I was in awe of this beast when my Eyes came across these photos via Pipe Burn.

Most people in Moto X reconize the 85-87 bikes as the fastest
open class bikes ever produced and with good reason. The power
will, pull your arms off, a works 250 is slow when compaired to these bikes.

Jetting is normally way too rich from the factory in both the pilot and the main jet. A flywheel weight (14oz) greatly enhances the
rideability of the bike especially in technical areas or woods.

When you get it jetted correctly the bike is very crisp off of idle and has incredible low to mid-range power and then flattens out on top.
However there is an enough top end to satisfy if not scare most
riders.

So to see this machine now transformed into a Flat tracker is mind boggling, putting all that grunt into the back wheel is something only a rider who has sampled its brutal power.

I am testament to this, riding my brothers and, in front of him and our mates, they all watched that CR500 spit me off like I was a Tick on a Bull and then to rub the proverbial Dirt in my face, the CR500 has the audacity to land on me and pummel my body a wee bit more.

So I literally  have no idea how this 2 stroke Behemoth will react when you hit the loud button on a bend, all i can say is grit your teeth and hold the hell on as this will be a ride you will never forget.

Adam has already built a couple of CR250’s as well, being that he was a fabricator of Drift race cars for a decade, seems a natural cross over to incorporate his skill into Two wheeled machines and if I had a hat on, I would tip it your way Adam.

Adam wanted to build this CR500 with a style that Honda would of maybe would of produced at that time if they had known the following it would produce and this is such a great job and it does look like a Factory HONDA  Race machine.

Adam fabricated a shorter swing arm made from chromoly and fitted a Ducati rear shock to keep your Arse from being beaten up as its a softer compression, the only stock parts from this machine really, is the frame and the Engine.

This has an XR750 Glass fibre tail section to give that Yester Year look and to add to that a Champion gas tank was purchased, these were all the rage and made back home in The UK and flat tracker love them.

Adam kept most of the FMF Expansion chamber but added a mid piece and then rejoined to FMF rear and cleverly exits under the rear seat cowl.

The front end is handled by a set of 2004 R6 Yamaha Forks, coupled up with a nice brembo that was removed from a KTM, the Rear caliper is off a Ducati Monster, so no problem on braking power now.

The Original CR500 was a drum rear, so a master cylinder from a later CRF was located and then Adam fabricated all the mounts to make sure that this set up function was right on the money.

The bike’s front CRF450 hub is laced to a 19 x 2.15 Excel rim, and the rear YZF250 hub has a slightly wider 2.5″ rim, also from Excel. This was Adam’s first time lacing wheels, so undoubtedly it was a bit of an experience for him. The tyres are Maxxis DTR-1s in a 27 x 7 x 19 up front and a 27.5 x 7.5 x 19 out the back. “Then for cooling I cut up two CR250 radiators, welded them together, and made up some new tanks to suit.”

With its RED ROCKET color schem this bike is a Home run for me, Id love to build one but CR500 machines are now highly sought after and I only have to think about 1986 when I got a severe thrashing from such a machine, maybe its best I do not attempt it on such a power house platform, albeit still build one but with a controllable engine that I can handle.

 

Barry Sheene Championship-Winning RG500s

Barry Sheene was one of my ALL time heroes as a teenager, I watched him race at Snetterton by Grabbing my Crash helmet that had no guts in it, I rolled some newspaper up and stuck it in there, I hitch hiked to the track, ran along the side field by the hedges and jumped the fence, just to watch him battle with Kenny Roberts, I will never forget that. I watched him race and then I had a long haul back to my house, so I began to stick my thumb out- numerous cars and bikes passed me and I was a little annoyed as to not getting a lift- as my mum had no idea I was at the races, she thought I was at my mates house up in Elveden Village, so had to be back by dark and the clock was ticking.

Then this Brown Rolls Royce came up, I thought to myself
‘Worth A try”
So out goes my thumb, I see the driver shake his head saying sorry, so being frustrated, I gave him the 2 fingers.

Feck me! it was my Hero Barry Sheene and I just gave him the 2 finger salute! I was devastated that i had done that but will always remember it.

Barry Sheene’s 1976 and 1977 world championship-winning race bikes have arrived at Suzuki GB, ahead of the Barry Sheene festival at Oliver’s Mount next month and as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Sheene’s first world title.

The bikes have been shipped directly from Australia for various events in the UK this year, and will be on display at the festival to celebrate the achievements of Suzuki and arguably Britain’s greatest world champion.

Also on display will be a collection of classic Suzuki road bikes, including the GSX-R750F that was restored at Motorcycle Live last year, and the TL1000S that was built from brand new parts the year before, highlighting Suzuki’s commitment to its Vintage Parts Programme.

Suzuki GB’s Tim Davies, said, “With it being 40 years since Barry’s first world title, this year’s festival marks a very special anniversary, which is why we wanted to be a part of this event for a second consecutive year to celebrate such an occasion. The event at Oliver’s Mount is always a good one, but we decided to step it up a notch for this year’s event, and the display of the two championship-winning bikes is the first time that they have been displayed together at such an event in the UK.

“Alongside Sheene’s race bikes the GSX-R750F and TL1000S will be displayed and information available on our Vintage Parts Programme, which now has 9 bikes listed and is dedicated to helping owners of more classic Suzuki machinery restore and maintain them with genuine parts.”

Scott Beaumont, Oliver’s Mount’s Marketing Director, added, “Suzuki’s commitment to the Barry Sheene festival at Oliver’s Mount is absolutely fantastic and for them to step it up again this year by displaying Barry Sheene’s actual race winning machines is every road racing fan’s dream. This could be the only opportunity in our lifetime that we see these machines and we are very proud that Suzuki has chosen Oliver’s Mount to display them.”
