John Surtees, former F1 and motorcycle world champion, dies aged 83

Tributes have been paid to John Surtees, who died on Friday 10th March 2017. He was an acknowledged great of the motor sport world and the only racer to have won world championships on motorbikes and in Formula One.

Surtees, who was 83 years old, was admitted to hospital in February with an existing respiratory condition and after a short period in intensive care died peacefully. He was much admired among his contemporaries, and by subsequent generations of drivers and fans, and had remained involved in motor sport after his retirement from competitive racing in 1972.

Surtees won the 500cc motorcycle world championship in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 with the MV Agusta factory team, for whom he scored 22 wins at the top level before switching to cars, making his debut for Lotus and winning the Formula One title for Ferrari in 1964, which included a remarkable win at the Nürburgring and one at Monza.

It was an achievement made all the more impressive given the level of competition he faced, beating Graham Hill and Jim Clark into second and third places. During the 12 years he raced in F1 he won six races from 111 starts. He also took a third place for Ferrari at Le Mans in 1964.

He left the scuderia having been at odds with the then manager in 1966, a decision Enzo Ferrari, who hugely admired the British driver to the extent that he invited him to join the team twice – something unheard of at the time – believed was a mistake for both parties and cost them a further championship.

Lewis Hamilton said: “I just heard about John Surtees. To end the day with that kind of news is very sad. He was a legend of the sport – a lovely guy who did so much. It’s a shock to everyone. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”

Hill’s son, Damon, posted on Twitter: “Such a lovely man. We have lost a true great motorsport legend. RIP John.” Ferrari also acknowledged the part he had played for the scuderia, tweeting: “John Surtees, Motorsport legend and 1964 World Champion with Ferrari, passed away. Our thoughts are with his family.”

The team went on to describe him as “The Great Surtees” and said “Ferrari has lost one of its greatest drivers” in a commemoration on their website.

Jenson Button posted: “Today we lost one of the all time greats on two and four wheels. We will miss you John… rip johnsurtees.” The former driver and commentator Martin Brundle tweeted: “Rest in Peace John Surtees, a great champion in every respect. Sadly he’ll never get the Knighthood he deserved. Condolences to the family.”

John Surtess was a huge Icon of mine, along with Mike Hailwood, Barry Sheene and Randy Mamola, I was sure hoping he would live long enough to be knighted by the Queen for his services to the Motorcycle and Car racing fraternity.

I met him and Sheene at Snetterton in the late 1970’s when they had the Trans Atlantic races on, such a great bloke, kinda like your Grandad.

I was envious of him racing the Vincents, what an awesome machine for its time.

Lotus motorcycle officially revealed

Lotus motorcycle officially revealed

By Andy Downes of Motorcycle News

 20 February 2014 11:24

As exclusively revealed by MCN more than five weeks ago, Lotus has taken the covers off the new motorcycle it will produce as a road bike and go on sale within months.

MCN got hold of leaked images over a month ago and revealed the plans for a road-legal motorcycle were way ahead of where many expected. The German-owned company Kodewa which has a licence to run the Lotus name has now officially revealed the final styling of the bike and technical details for the first time.

We can see the engine is a 1195cc V-twin from KTM’s RC8R superbike with a claimed 200bhp and dry weight of 180kg.

Lotus Motorcycles states: “The C-01 combines ample power via a V-twin engine with a distinctive body designed by Daniel Simon integrating carbon fibre, titanium and aerospace quality steel.

“The C-01 motorcycle is not designed, engineered or produced by Group Lotus plc but is the result of a collaboration between motorsport veterans under the leadership of Kodewa, led by Dr Colin Kolles. The development on the C-01 was carried out with the support of Holzer Group (co-owners of Kalex) and design guru Daniel Simon.

“Drawing on their wealth of motorsport experience, the team of engineers has designed a unique high performance superbike.

“The C-01 will be available in a range of liveries some of which pay homage to Lotus’ sporting pedigree. A customisation service is also available, limited only by the imagination of the client. With an exclusive production run of just 100 units, superbike collectors and fans of the Lotus brand will need to move fast to secure one.”

LOTUS BRINGS OUT ITS BIG GUNS IN MOTORCYCLE FORM

                                                        COOL NEWS FROM LOTUS

Back in June, Lotus announced it was getting into the motorcycle business. Or, we should say, Kodewa and the Holzer Group are getting into the motorcycle business, and have acquired the rights to use the Lotus name. One way or another, we’re now receiving word on some of the specs we can expect from the prototype dubbed C-01.

The Lotus motorcycle is being designed by Daniel Simon, the automotive futurist who has penned, among other things, the light-cycles for Tron: Legacy and the livery on the LMP2 racer Kodewa also fields under the Lotus name. So you know it’s going to look pretty awesome, but what will make it go?

According to Visor Down, the C-01 is being tested with a V-twin engine sourced from an undisclosed supplier that produces 170 horsepower in stock trim but has been tuned to produce nearly 200 hp in Lotus trim. A pair of prototypes – one with carbon-fiber bodywork and one without – have already undergone several thousand kilometers of testing, and are said to be handling “very well.”

We’ll have to wait until next month when the talents behind the project are expected to release more information, but for now it’s sounding pretty sweet indeed.

So, the wheel has come full circle and now we have Automobile manufacturers mixing their cooking pot with some 2 wheeled flavor.

I just got this from a mate of mine in Thailand and as I am an avid Motorcycle News reader, thought I would do a little blog on this New machine.

MCN has the world exclusive images of the new Lotus superbike in this week’s issue of the paper along with details of the project and how running prototypes are already out testing.

We have exclusive high resolution images of the new Lotus C-01 superbike as well as exclusive information from those close to the project revealing more details about the 200bhp V-twin.

The C-01 is the first bike to come from a new set-up using the Lotus name under licence.

Lotus announced it was moving into the world of motorcycles in June last year and at the time it promised a 200bhp bike would be on sale in late 2013 or early 2014 but no images of the bike have been seen so far.

MCN managed to get hold of two images from a source close to the project. That source, who didn’t want to be named, was able to hint at a few details of the bike which certainly looks very different to anything else currently on the market. These computer generated images have come directly from the Lotus factory and are not the work of MCN.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

OK, I have been waiting to see a whole exhibition on prototype machines, so hope other manufacturers take a feather out of the Lotus machine and have a go at creating their unique 2 wheeled creation, I am sure BMW could knock something out of the park quickly?

I shall be keeping my eyes open for you tube video’s too as someone always manages to get sneak peeks. So, I watch with baited Breath.

Peace and Grease as always.
