1976 Kawasaki KZ 400 Cafe Racer Motorcycle $2300

Here we are with a Customer that is selling his little KZ400 Cafe Racer machine, a fun motorcycle with plenty of zip from the 400cc engine. He has been riding it consistently for the last three years without any issues. It has an electronic start and idles great. Never topped 100 with it, but never really tried to either.

The Kawasaki KZ400/Z400 is a street motorcycle that was produced by Kawasaki between 1974 and 1984. The 398cc displacement of the twin cylinder engine was increased to 443cc for the KZ440/Z440. The later KZ400-J used a 399cc four cylinder engine.

Canadian Norton Custom Brat-Scrambler is a real eye catcher.

When you think of Canada, I am sure you have passing images of Mountie’s, Moose, and the Stanley Cup in any order, well, we head on over to Edmonton, named after the City I was Born at in North London, this city has a huge passion for Motorcycles. You know when you are in that part of the globe when someone asks if you have a Loonie, you may think its a term of insanity ? Until you realize it is their Dollar coin that has a Loon bird on it.

Where’s the largest expanse of urban parkland in Canada? Nope, it’s not in Vancouver. Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River valley parks system takes that title with a total of 7,300 hectares (you could fit about 18 Stanley Parks in there, if you squashed them). In fact, 20 back-to-back parks make up the system, which spans along both sides of the river (itself winding through the middle of the city), making this capital a whole lot greener and natural than you may have thought.

So, a perfect place for a bunch of lads named, Shaun Brandt, Randy Venhuis, and Justin Benson, of which formed their Custom Fabrication shop named Federal Moto, and a while ago turned out this amazing 850 Norton Commando.

They just wanted to try something a little different, and over in the MAPLE country there seems to be tons of Japanese Motorcycles scattered about like mattresses on the 5 Freeway here, so- they wanted to try and go with a little more Nostalgia, a bit of Brit style, seeing as a lot of their Dollar Bills still have the Queen plastered on them, they thought they would go an older style route and see what they can come up with using this old Commando as a build platform and a good challenge for these guys to see what their skill set level could accomplish.

I think many restorer’s will want to kick them right in the Rocky Mountains for cutting one of these Birmingham flyers up, but, on the other hand, there would be even more people loving the hell out of this unique machine and I for one am one of them. This is a killer looking ride that to be honest James Lansdowne Norton should of created as I for one would be all over one of these.

It takes way more thinking out of the box I believe, when you attack an Old Empire two wheeled machine and there will be many hours of head scratching and screwed up post it notes to even try to figure out where this bike is going to go creativity wise.

The Ace’ is a 1974 Commando that was discovered on a farm in Rimbey, Alberta, the bike did run but was about as reliable as a BSA, but the bike already had a hearty attitide and the look that the team of builders were after seemed to steer towards a Brat- Scrambler, a cool bar Hopper with an old look that could be ridden to the beach or up into the Mountains and handle the terrain with ease. So it was decided that this was the route to take, they wanted to keep the heart of the bike, the Motor, as it was from the Factory in 1974, but the rest was all up for ideas and changes and so the Journey began.

As the Idiom states, – Mighty Oaks from little Acorns Grow- and this was certainly the case with this 850cc Steed.  The Bike was stripped faster than a Crook being caught at the Border and before they knew it the Skeleton of the Commando was staring right at them, but that frame? It has the thick center seam that all Nortons are known for, this really needed to be thought out as a back bone such as this would spoil the lines of the current project, so some major engineering calculations was required to be able to pull off something that was aesthetically on the money!

Running out of Cigarette packets to draw on, they had to come up with a workable conclusion, somewhat flustered and tired, these guys managed to come up wit a very cool modification that not only gave the lines of these machine a more elegant style, but it kept the rigidity that the original was designed to do. the frame was actually shortened by 18 inches or 457.2 mm for the Metric fans out there.  Then a 1 inch -065 wall cold rolled steel tube was hand bent to make the hoop to tidy the back of the frame up and the beginning of this Brat-Tracker motorcycle was now well underway.

Also there needed to be what is known as an equilibrium , which in layman’s terms is ;

A state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced.
“The maintenance of social equilibrium”  Balance, Symmetry, Equipoise, Parity, equality and Stability.-

They pulled that off by going for a set of 19 inch rims and shod with a set of Vintage styled Coker tires and I have to agree it does look the Status Quo.

The frame had all the tabs, brackets and nick knacks that were not going to help the machine handle or go faster, cut off, then sanded to a smooth finish, and Powder Coated Black, the bike actually had about 30 pounds or (13.6078) Kilograms removed, so now this Norton will feel so much better in the bends.

For a stylish look, a 1971 Oil tank was located and brackets were fabbed to make sure that this fitted like a factory piece, then a seat pan was hand cut, rolled and shaped to engulf the chassis with a Historic style that even the restorers may even crack a smile too.
Such neat lines on this Motorcycle.

The Mudguards are mid-50s Triumph items rescued from a junk pile, reshaped and finished in matte black and the exhaust system was another great little detail of which they located a set of 1971 Commando SS pipes and then removed about 12 inches from them and added an Old style reverse Cone Megaphone Muffler to give that Olden days gone by feel and of course sound.

The Motor itself was not bad at all, considering it had sat around for some time, but none the less, you go this far, well, in for a penny right?  So Federal pulled it apart and inspected, cleaned and polished everything. They got the valves dialed in, bored the pistons, and replaced the piston rings.

“Well worth it, considering it’s got even more compression than an industrial trash compactor!”

Salvageable parts were sanded and polished in-house, with replacement items sourced through local guru John Oland. “This build would not have been possible without John’s willingness to share his knowledge of vintage motorcycles. The guy is a legend,” says Brandt..

Small bullet style turn signals were chosen and kept as minimal as possible, anything with switches, as old Brit handlebar controls were big and bulky, so they chose to go with another route and drill and fit small Micro switches and this is so tidy and looks a Million dollars. With a reworked wire harness, and a 5-3/4 Bates style headlight that was fitted as low as possible, gave this 2 wheeler a real classic stance.

Using a small anti-Gravity 4 cell battery, kept the bike away from any Bulky items and was placed neatly under the seat unit,and helping the steering, a super Low set of A10-A65 bars were placed on top of the yokes.

Another neat touch was the grips, as they were purchased from Tommaselli in Italy and used the Natural Gum series , a good choice.

Federal wanted to keep some of the original parts on the bike and the rear Hub was left stock, refurbished and painted but up front was a slightly different story-

They figured out a Tokico two-piston assembly and a Katana 750 rotor—machining a new mounting bracket for the forks.

And now this Norton will do like many do not, and thats stop, real quick!!!!

I personally like the 2 Tone leather application to the seat pan, that really does give this creation a touch of Elegance and form, and I take my hat off to that, although the rear mudguard is short.

It will stop the road grim from sending a line up your back but it may build up behind the motor as there is no guard liner, but looks great none the less.

The Gas tank was painted an off White and the famous Gold logo was added to give the bike its Original Brand back once more.

A super fun machine that if you secretly asked the old boy restorer’s,if they would dearly like to ride this around their town? I am certain.

HONDA CB750 BRAT BIKE

Well, here we are with a 1974 Honda CB750 SOHC model that was turned into an old Land Speed dry lakes Racing bike many many moons ago, but have no real history documentation of what it achieved back in the day etc, but- you can be sure that someone thought long and hard as to what they may do with it.

Last year this was a total mess, it was too dangerous to even attempt to ride, so, it sat for some time in the corner of the shop of mine, until such time as I thought that it needed to have a new lease of life and restyle this inline four 500 pounder into something a little cooler.

As you can see by the photos below, it was not much of a looker but- it did intrigue me to see to what lengths people would go to with these iconic Honda Fours, and I just let this bike sit until I decided it was indeed time to resurrect this sleeping giant. I removed the Old wheel and Built 2 Brand New Rims, with Polished Hubs and Stainless Steel Spokes, Both 18 inch rims.

So, time has gone by and over the past few weeks I have changed a number of things and I am sure that you will notice a difference right away, this is NO show point for sure, I just went ahead and changed a few bits and bobs as I pulled the old rusty and non usable parts off and either refurbished, remade or purchased New parts to slowly transform this inline 4 into a cool looking Bar hopper Brat style machine.

Below is the bike with another Gas tank, fitted with a New OEM genuine Honda Petcock, then I have totally rebult the old carbs, vapor blasted and rejetted them to the pipe, the parts taken off were zinc plated, polished and re-assembled.

Some of you may not even like what I am creating here, that’s fine as we all have our own tastes, but, if you are reading this, then of course, you must be into seeing what is becoming of this Single Over head cam Motorcycle. I wanted a Brat style machine and every few days at a New part, some of the work I have created has taken many hours and sometimes days to get it right.

Just have a look at the front forks compared to the old ones, as I took them apart. cleaned everything internally, then Polished the lowers, fitted New genuine Honda Fork seals and then Brand New Chrome Fork upper tubes, with New springs and caps etc, I also set the pre-load with stainless washers, just like back in the old days of racing.

I also cut the back of the old frame rails as they were not good anyway, and then I made my Own steel Hoop and shortened the chassis to give the bike a lower looking stance, Whilst I was at it, I also fitted a Custom Oil Tank that I sell on my website, this Oil tank holds 3 Quarts and has a battery Compartment where I have fitted an Anti-Gravity 8 cell battery pack and managed to fit some of the electrical in there too.

Also you can see that I made a seat pan and upholstered it with cool Old School style Diamond Stitching, this looks pretty cool and am surprised how comfortable the seat is, and just have a look at how much this bike has changed since I first acquired it, I have fitted new Diamond Treaded Firestone Tires to match the seat and both Rims are 18 inch and make the bike sit so much better than the stock configuration.

Now, As you can also quite clearly see, this bike has a TON of New or refurbished parts, the carbs alone are like New, has a super cool New polished Air-box that makes this Motor breathe right.The Motor has Black wrinkle High temp paint on it and is embellished with stainless Allen head bolts through out and Brand New Honda valve caps on the cover.

This Brat Bike now has some cool parts, like my Newest Prototype exhaust system, the “Sling Shot” This is a great set up that produces power through all the range of motion and sounds incredible, later I will add a sound byte for you to sample the Motorcycle Running. A few months ago I got this running and I loved the sound when I had the raw steel exhaust on, this now has a high performance exhaust system and is look really cool.

 

 

 

CB550 Bar Hopper Brat style. $4000

This is our CB550 Bar Hopper that’s for sale with original pink slip, one owner and last rode and parked way back in 1986 and now available to anyone out there for a fun looking machine.

This is not a show bike but something I wanted to resurrect from a stock bike that was simply left and then slowly corroded and this was the ideal time to do quite a few things to this bike to make it a cool Brat style Digger.

I have ridden this around and all it needs is air filters which I hope to sort out this week, but I rode her and she is a fun little bike, puffs a little smoke but it seemed to stop after a while, but sat for 28 years I am not surprised, but she seems to pull quite hard and It is fun to ride around, but this is not for a 300 pound guy as we lowered this and you would bottom the seat out on the tire.

Now we have done many things to this machine and that does not stop you from tearing it down, painting the frame and making a show machine, but we wanted to try something a little different and get the bike to look a little more Vintage than it is and I believe we pulled that off, judging by the amount of comments we have received over this bike.

As it has a title this can be shipped anywhere. And is now available, so if ya interested, drop us a line, I know the speedometer had 25,000 o it and I believe that to be a true reading, of course it now has a 2.5 inch speedometer on this machine now and it was set a zero and I have only done a couple of miles on it and maybe a couple more if you buy this as i run it as much as I can as i want to keep everything functioning.

Stock headers mated to our stainless muffler sets this side of the bike off very well and yes it is baffled too.

We used our rear license plate set up with the good old Ford Tail light to show we are into Vintage stuff and works very well indeed and yes, it has a brake light too.

Dakota made the one off seat as we needed a low seat base to give this machine that Digger styling and it looks great.

The Brat bike is quite a new style that popped out of the cafe Racer and bobber style and now is very popular around the globe.

Brand New tires and tubes that really give it the Vintage style make this machine stand out from the others and I am glad I went this way.

This is no show pony but it turns plenty of heads as the stance is a good focal point on this 550.

Brand spanking New Chrome rims, with stainless steel laced and of course polishied hubs with new bearings make this a clean machine,.

We rebuilt the front brake caliper and also fitted braided brake lines, a new master cylinder and of course bled it all so it stops great.

New battery in an Alloy Battery box we make gives the bike a new life once more.

Sits well on the side stand and all the lights work as well as horn on this cool Brown bomber.

We also fitted one of our machined finned oil filter covers and of course changed the oil and filter.

We fitted out Alloy Fork brace to stiffen the front end up seeing as we removed the fender.

We angled the shocks and we wanted to make this low enough for many girls who love the bikes but are not tall enough to ride and this would be perfect for a shorter person.

We used vintage lowering blocks as this really is a nice and low digger style machine with a super stance.

The exhaust looks cool as its our stainless steel end and it does have a baffle too, you can hear it at the bottom of the blog here.

Vintage 7/8 Bars were added to my new bar risers and a set of Old school style grips added, as well as fitting a neutral light in the steering stem.

 

 

 

Below, you can see that the carbs are now fully rebuilt and had to be as this bike has not run since 1986 when it was parked up in La Mirada.

 

The forks are totally rebuilt with brand new uppers from franks and I had them shortened by 2 inches, I then cleaned up the lower stanchion and then machined the grooves in them and then polished to a nice luster.

 

 

New fork uppers and rebuilt and machines, this has the right stance as we lowered the bike 2 inches.

Check the tags out, April 1986 was the st time this was on the tarmac.

We drilled  and polished rear brake hub and also the main hub has new bearings and was polished too.

I used an old 1932 Cowl light up front that my buddy gave me from Limeworks speed shop and this is a genuine Cowl light too.

Dakota takes the Little Bar Hopper on its first maiden journey around the block and it was fine.

This is a fun machine and I am sure that someone will have a ball with it.
