Heading to El Mirage Dry Lake for the weekend to watch the Racing

As many of you know, I have always liked anything fast but when there could be a world record at stake, then my eyes and ears are wide open, so this weekend, Jennifer and I will load up the truck and take the 2 hour jaunt up to the desert and to El Mirage Dry lake to watch the SCTA sanctioned races that’s held to close this years racing event.

This year I have way too much on to bring a Motorcycle out here but it was Jennifer’s idea to come out and camp, watch the Motorcycles and Hot Rods run as well as listen to the Coyotes howls and the stars sparkle out in the cold desert. Come on out and look us up as we always park up and camp out at Mid course.

El Mirage dry lake bed has been home to Land Speed Racing (LSR) for more than half a century. It is located just 30 miles east of a growing high desert community known as the Antelope Valley. Back when Land Speed Racing was young, a group of men that had been racing on the dry lakes for several years, decided to incorporate and create a new racing organization which would enforce safety procedures and promote the sport. Hence the birth of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA).

All of the various club members, SCTA board members, and all other event workers volunteer their time and energy to the benefit of the sport. Our events are wonderful for families and friends to join together for fun and the excitement that always follows Land Speed Racing. There are four (4) one-day races per year, June/July/Sep/Oct and (2) two-day races in May/November. Vehicle inspections begin on the day prior to the race (Friday/Saturday) and the racing begins early Saturday/Sunday morning. The race day starts with a drivers meeting, patrol meeting, announcements, and national anthem. The duration of the race usually lasts as long as the weather and course conditions hold up. All drivers and crew members are allowed in the starting line area with a signed insurance form and wrist tag. Spectators are required to stay behind the barricades, where they will have an excellent, but safe view of the operational area.Vehicles are lined up for the starting line according to their current season points standing.

All entries must be a member of one of the clubs within the Southern California Timing Association. But – there is a “Guest” option to race on the course for “Time Only”. All drivers MUST be licensed for the speed at which they will be racing.

Overnight camping is always welcome on the lake bed with a few simple rules. No open fires, no waste dumping, and if you bring it in, you take it home. Speed and helmet regulations exist while on the lake bed and are strictly enforced. During the summer months it can get very hot, so shade is a must as well as sun screen and plenty of water. There is usually a food vendor, and the SCTA has a sales trailer for all the racing goodies. Racing on a dry lakebed can be very dirty and windy, so casual clothing is advised. All race information for the event is announced on a loud speaker and also broadcast on an FM frequency (88.7) for all spectators to hear while at the lakebed. As of 1996, the SCTA decided to return to one of the original sites which hosted many LSR race events until WWII.

This is one of the best places in the world to experience Hot Rodding at its very best, sat on the far west side of Britain, Pendine Sands in Wales has so much racing history on this infamous beach.

I just had to post some photos I saw and will credit those who took them. the Sidewinders put this annual event on and a lot of work it needs to get to where it is, so when you get a chance, drop them a line than thank them for all their hard work.

These sands have been raced on for many many years, even in 1951 the motorcycles all took part in racing.

So, with over 150 entries at Pendine, this only seems to get bigger and better.

The Tiki Pool Party has become one of the major events at VLV, and will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is a great opportunity for girls (and guys!) to show off their vintage swimwear.  New to VLV18 – The Pool Party will begin early, at 9am, on Sunday!

CABANAS AT VLV

As you know, there are a limited number of cabanas at the pool for VLV and the hotel is getting a lot of requests so here is the plan. A cabana for Friday, Saturday or Sunday will be $250 for a day. That includes guaranteed entry to the pool area for 10 people. Between now and March 8th please send an email to cabana@vivalasvegas.net On that day we will randomly draw winners who will then be able to phone the hotel and deal with the payment.

Don’t forget that the pool party will be for 3 days this time and you will automatically be entered into the drawing for all 3 days. The hotel also hopes to have even more cabanas installed by then.

Please only use cabana@vivalasvegas.net for entering the draw. If you have questions please email tom@vivalasvegas.net

ELVIS PUT THE CUE IN THE RACK 36 YEARS AGO TODAY !

The King of Rock n Roll put the Cue in the rack 36 years ago today, many of you will know where you were when the king passed away, some were not even born, but know this is the day that the poor bugger, carked it on the crapper.

The legend that he was, and his memory still lives on as strong as ever and will continue in the world of Rock n Roll.

I saw the newspaper later too and there it was in Black and White for all to see.

"If you can't find a partner, grab a wooden cross." Jailhouse Rock's lyrics could easily be modified for Christian Rock.

I remember where i was, it was a mates country home in a place called Woolpit, in East Anglia, as a bunch of crazy kids, i was sat in my mates mum’s Kitchen, it was the School summer Holiday and we were mucking about as usual and thought it would be cool if we had a pierced ear as that was the cool thing to have done that year.

So, as my mate was trying to persuade a frigging knitting needle to go through my earlobe and the screaming i was doing, all of a sudden stopped when the transistor radio we were listening too ( new kids, look up on Wikipedia what that is) came to a silent moment and them said ” the King is dead!”

A sol-um moment in our time and we could not believe it, Elvis Presley ten toes up?  No way, this cannot be true! But indeed it was.

Found collapsed on the carzy  and had more narcotics in him than the local Chemist, it was a shock to us all.

I remember hearing the news every where, on TV and radio, in the papers on the radio and word of mouth spread like wildfire.

Even at Radio ONE, loads of teds stood in line by the station to show a wee bit of Rock n Roll solidarity at hearing the news of Elvis passing.

So now- 36 years later, he is still remembered as the king Of Rock n Roll, I loved his 50’s and 60’s era and many loved his 70’s and we shall all remember him on this day and I am sure always will, and wanted to just put a little blurb on here for you lot to see and maybe remember where you were on August the 16th 1977.

My old man will- its his Birthday.
