59 Club O.C. Section had a Great weekend.

Hey all

Well, this weekend was quite a busy one for the 59 Club Orange County Section as Saturday Morning we all met up at Boys Burgers and then Jennifer and Amanda both led the Club on the route to the Classic car and Motorcycle show that was being held at Seal beach.

sealaa1

The day was Hot and an early start was needed to try and get to the event before we started to cook, as every year it is warm there, even though it is by the beach, it gets bloody scorching some times, so, with 15 riders we headed towards the Seal beach area.

sealaa3

Great Formation of riders and very enjoyable ride, its way better than just jumping on a freeway as they tend to be boring, dangerous and not much to look at.

sealaa4

We arrived at the Naval Grounds and was greeted by the Navy Soldiers, who kindly showed where we could park our two wheeled machines, it was right by the water and a nice breeze to have on us.

We then left the bikes under armed guards and then we caught a free shuttle bus to the event, it was an old British Double Decker with some of the upper windows taken out and felt nice with the cool sea air coming through the bus as we took the short 5 minute trip to the event.

This show is enormous and usually everyone veers off to their favorite car or motorcycle and we either bump into each other or catch up later on.

Jennifer and Amanda led the group and did a fantastic job, well done Girls!

The Sun was starting to bake us but what a great show with tons of Cool Classic iron to look at and further up on the seafront they had the Motorcycle section.

Plenty to see there too and this Annual event seems to be getting bigger and bigger, great to see but I think they need a few more Vendors as so many people come to this show nopw, I know people would buy their wares.

I may have a booth and show a bike at the next one, problem is, there are so many events on through out the summer here in California, it is hard to keep up with what is what and I end up forgetting, then kick myself later on.

If you can make this show- Try and do it and there is something for everyone here, a Mixture of Cars, Trucks and Motorcycles and the atmosphere is really great, everyone is happy and more than happy to talk about their ride they have on display.

I had a blast but the weather was bloody warm and amazing as its by the beach, but there are a lot of shops and restaurants to go and check out too if you get out here.

Below, I bumped into  Fellow Brit.-Mike Brewer from the TV show- Wheeler Dealers, he has a New side kick and was trying some live video at the show, ya never know who you may meet at an event we go to.

sealaa82

We stayed for quite a few hours and could of easily stayed longer if the Sun stayed back a bit, but a great Saturday and a relaxing ride with great friends.

Tomorrow we ride to Griffith park to see our mate Andrew Chaves place as he works at live Steamers where all the smaller gauge trains are built, serviced and run, should be a blast!

It’s always fun with the 59 club, come and check us out  we are on meetup.com under Carpys Cafe Racer Meetups 59 Club OC and maybe you would like to come ride with us?

Hot Rod Reunion Bowling Green, KY- Gasser Crash!

The “Traveler” Altizer, Finders, and Kibler 33 Willys Crash Sequence

Header_title

In the first round of the 1/8 mile contested AA/Gas category Ted Turley Jr. driving the “Traveler” Altizer, Finders, and Kibler 33 Willys had just beat Steve Crooks’ “Blew By You” Gasser with a 5.617 at 118.42 mph when disaster struck.  A brief puff of white smoke appeared from the car which was followed by a hard right turn that sent the car on its roof and across the track behind Crooks’ car. The 33 Willys briefly went airborne landing on its side and sliding to a stop just short of the opposite guardrail.  Turley fortunately was able to walk away from the car uninjured.      by Mike Sopko Jr.

I wanted to show these photos  today on Monday as to be honest, after this sentence no words need to be said but, glad he walked away, testament to modern structural engineering in the chassis of Drag cars, scary but Phew- it could of easily ended worse for the driver.

Friday the 13th but a good day at the shop

OK- its Friday and its also Friday the 13th but a good one, the sun is out, the shop is busy and its almost the weekend.
A number of things going on where we are in this sunny state. SoCal speed shop and Waldens have their Open days, limeworks was yesterday and he had a blast, and the start of the Fathers day Roadster show is on in Pomona, as well as at Fontana, Our shop greaser is racing his Kawasaki in the summit series and also racing against his old man, which is great as it will be fathers day, so maybe kota will give him some slack?…NOT!

Ok I like to put Music videos on that cheer my day up and some of you like them by the emails we get here at CCR, so here is a great band, the Reverend Horton heat, who plays down here on a regular basis.
So check this high def video out called “let me teach you how to eat” Bit risque but great for a Friday.

Below is a video from Danny Rockabilly and His Clan-Dirty Baby Music Video and its a new upbeat tempo that i really dig, the riffs are pretty reminisant of early Sun recordings and I just like it and thought would share wit you.

Massive part of my life for over 3 decades and I lived the whole lifestyle, I loved the music clothes the jiving, we sure had a ball back in the UK in the 80’s and 90’s, this was a 5 night a week lifestyle for me and good old Ronnie dawson was a superb guy that was taken away from us waaaay to early.
This is just a smidgen of what we did.

Dakota Races at Fontana Drags this weekend

Anyone around the Fontana area should see if they can make time to hit the Drag strip and wish our shop grease monkey- Dakota Kai Sun- all the very best as he runs not only against his pops ” Aaron “Twist the Wrist Pine”  but many other super fast and cool people that will be running against him this weekend.

Dakota is still the points leader in the series and sure hope that he continues to be in top form as he goes up against the rest of the field on Saturday at Fontana in the NHRA Summit Series.

Below , Dakota lines up at irwindale to race his old man and both on their numbers too, this is always exciting to see these guys run and everybosy in the championship as racing is so tight.

I shall be there on Sunday with Jennifer Dakota’s Mum , come by to watch some brilliant racing, everyone is friendly and you can get so close to all the action.

Come see the speed these nutters get up to and wave on 7111- Dakota Kai Sun- to another great weekend of racing.

El Mirage this weekend – Hope to see you there.

SCTA returns to El Mirage looking for records

May 16, 2014 11:42 PM

Do you have a need to see some speed?

The Southern California Timing Association can help this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday at El Mirage Dry Lake, SCTA is putting on the first of six land speed racing events.

Depending on the vehicle count and how well they handle the elements, drivers may have up to six or seven opportunities to set world records in different types of cars and motorcycles — old and new — with different sized engines. Drivers from as far away from Sweden and Norway are signed up to participate.

One car takes off at a time to challenge the 1.3-mile dirt straightway on the west end of the dry lake. High Desert Racers president Tom Foley said they’re expecting at least 100 vehicles to enter.

Car inspections were held from Friday afternoon and there was a rookie driver orientation afterward.

“If you’re a rookie, we don’t just turn you lose on the lake bed,” Foley said. “You have to go through inspection. Basically if you turn to the right you have a broken vehicle. If you turn to the left you have a normal return. It’s a good thing to turn to the left, but you can’t go out of bounds and you lose all your points. Safety, of course.”

Racing begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

To participate, drivers must be a member of a racing club affiliated with the SCTA at El Mirage, or they can compete as a guest. Guest times will be unofficial, and guests can only compete if their vehicle passes the safety check, Foley said.

Foley, a Phelan resident, holds land speed records at El Mirage in the 1350cc engine vintage motorcycle sidecar gas and fuel divisions.

SCTA sanctioned events at El Mirage will also be held June 22, July 13, Sept. 14, Oct. 19 and Nov. 8-9.

It costs $15 per carload per day to enter the lake area and it doesn’t cost any extra for camping.

C.J. Daft can be reached at christiand@vvdailypress.com or at 760-951-6275.

The great thing about El Mirage is this has been a place to go fast since before WW2, many people have been here to ride motorcycle, drive hot rods and even landing a plane, I have been involved in many photo shoots here, as well as some TV documentary’s, this place is oozing with History.

So, get yourself down to El Mirage as just to see the cars and bikes getting ready to run the dry lake is awesome and probably the only place other than Bonneville that you can get right next to the machines for a closer peek at what drives people to come here from all over the globe.

Maybe next year we shall build something to run, but for now I just love the atmosphere and the chance that someone may even break a world record at the dry lake.

Be there to see the start at 7:30am it gets hot, so be prepared with plenty of liquids and wear a hat.

ROYAL ENFIELD BOBBER

How cool is this, I saw this write up on Bike EXIF and had to share it as this is

a really well built

Bobber and something I really like and thought that you would too.

Not much for me to say really but just read and admire, as this is definatly

a head turner.

SIDEBURN ROYAL ENFIELD BULLET

Royal Enfield Bullet

By  | Sideburn Magazine

After 50 years of production in India, Royal Enfield had worked hard to update their range, first with a unit construction engine, then fuel injection and after all that the only thing on Sideburn magazine’s mind was making the 2009 Bullet Classic look like a mid-‘60s flat track racer.

Only half the frame and the engine remains from the original bike that was supplied to Sideburn by UK Royal Enfield specialists, Watsonian-Squire.

Royal Enfield Bullet

Lots of parts came from friends. Or we already had them, and were waiting for the right bike to come along. The alloy tank was custom-made for a friend’s dirt track race bike, but he was never happy with it, so we bought it for a fraction of having one made. The Bimota YB9 triple clamps and Paoli forks were £120 off eBay.

The wheels, Excel 19-inch rims with Honda CRF450 hubs and Maxxis tires, were bought from a friend who was selling his dirt tracker. The tractor headlight was a gift; so was the bobbed Indian Sport Scout rear mudguard and the rear four-piston Performance Machine caliper.

Royal Enfield Bullet
The hardtail loop is by David Bird from Lowbrow Customs, but we had Co-Built shorten the bottom rail to retain the stock wheelbase. Co-Built also made the stainless exhaust.

CFM of Lincolnshire, UK, did a great job of making all the very disparate parts fit together, fabricating brackets, footrest hangers; finding used Japanese master cylinders, switchgear and footpegs on the cheap; repositioning the battery; making the rear fender struts; cutting down the original twin seat and converting it to act as a sprung saddle. Steve Adams then covered it with a panel of real stingray skin.

Royal Enfield Bullet
The biggest challenge was converting the ignition to work with the Mikuni carb, rather than fuel injection. EFI is good, but we really wanted a simple loom and no fuel pump for this bike. Rupe’s Rewires made the loom.

When this bike was built there was no off-the-shelf kit to convert the ignition from EFI, like there is now, but CFM worked it out. The brake discs were special orders from Discacciati in Italy.

The final touch was the Ornamental Conifer paintwork on the blue base, one of the first customer bikes he painted.

Royal Enfield Bullet
The bike has competed in Sideburn’s Dirt Quake event twice, finishing on the podium in the Street Tracker class both times.

I’m in an Italian magazine this month.

Always great to be in any media to be honest- but was stoked to be in Riders magazine in Italy, as they are sure passionate about their Motorcycles and industry.

So to have an article about me in that that rag is so cool, this is a top quality magazine and many people have been featured like Rossi, Roberts and so many of my icons, so to see this really made my day and cannot thank them enough for coming to see me.

We get media from all over the globe visit us and have photo shoots with people from Helmet companies to high Fashion magazines, so we must be doing something right?

I remember them flying out to see me and they had an interpreter and we had a fun day chatting and taking photographs.

Clay Smith, a man beyond his years.

cschpbanner1.jpg

Everyone knows this logo, many people have seen it on Tee shirts and many even have this iconic Woodpecker inked on their body, not many people remember that he was a Man beyond his years in mechanical ideology, but clay Smith was an unbelievable non college trained guy, that could turn chicken poo into chicken pie.

I have taken a few examples of his history here as people still think the man himself is here, I guess in spirit he always will be and of course the shop in Dale street down the road from me in Buena park will have his parts for ever.

Who knows where he would be today if it wasnt for that tragic day in 1954 but i will never forget him that’s for sure.

In fact, Clays original Cam grinding machine is still used in there to this day.

Enjoy

Gearhead Guys You Should Know: Clay Smith

smith

Clay Smith, the legendary purveyor of speed during the early days of professional racing here in America is a gearhead guy you should know. He’s a more than worthy guy to be profiled. Heck, Smokey Yunick looked up to him.

Yup, Smokey Yunick once dubbed Clay Smith, “the world’s smartest mechanic.” That’s something coming from a guy who was notoriously light on the compliments. Most people recognize Smith’s name and immediately think about the camshaft company and its famous logo. Mr. Horsepower, the pissed off looking, cigar chomping, bird was drawn up to be a cartoon version of Smith himself, a whimsical look at an intense and brilliant competitor. It’s been argued that the image of the red-headed fowl was the inspiration for Woody the Woodpecker.

Smith’s mechanical education did not come from a university or a set of mail order books. He learned on the job by hand grinding cams. As legend has it, he was good enough and smart enough to tune each lobe to the cylinder it was to be working on.

Smith worked for a man named Pierre Bertrand in his shop as a younger man. That experience, along with the experiences of racing, sunk the hook deep. In 1942 Bertrand died and Smith bought the company. It was renamed Clay Smith Engineering.

It should be noted that Smith cams were appearing in midgets, land speed cars, Indy cars and even stock cars, but with the addition of his own full line shop, his name skyrocketed along with his celebrity. Now building full-on racing engines, Smith’s business was expanding

We’ll skip right up to 1947 when Smith made his first big headlines. He teamed with Bill Stroppe to compete in a hydroplane boat race. Their machine was powered by a Ford straight six engine and they were repeatedly told that it was junk. The problems were numerous with the factory pieces. Oil starvation and vibration were two of the terminal problems with that particular motor. Smith solved them both and they won the event.

So impressed were the people at Ford, they kept Smith on a sort of retainer to work on special projects, and they put him to good use. He took a stocker Mercury and tweaked it to get the best mileage possible, winning the 1950 Mobilgas Economy Run. Following up on that success, Ford had Smith and Stroppe prepare Lincolns for the PanAmerican Road race across Mexico. That was a harrowing adventure for drivers’ as well with lots of sharp turns and kinks. The big Lincolns dominated until the race was discontinued in 1954.

During the time of the headline projects Smith was grinding cams and tuning engines for racers all over the country. He became one of the early household names of the hot rodding world. His crowning achievement was tuning Troy Ruttman to victory at the 1952 Indy 500. He had arrived.

With the camshaft business booming and his tuning abilities being sought out by the biggest names in racing, it all came to a tragic end for Smith at an Illinois speedway in 1954.

Roger Ward lost it on the front straight of the Du Quoin Speedway in Du Quoin, Illinois. His car careened into the pits, striking Smith and killing him. Smith had been Ward’s own crewchief in years past and the accident shook the steely Ward so hard he nearly walked away from auto racing forever.

Clay Smith’s story is one of sadly unrealized long term potential. His accomplishments prior to passing were huge, so we can only imagine what he would have gotten done with decades more of life. There’s all the chance in the world that he’d be held in the same mainstream gearhead lexicon as Yunick and others of his ilk. We can only imagine the fun he would have had in the musclecar era. His company still lives in the hands of capable owners who are maintaining a legacy of quality and innovation.

Clay Smith, another gearhead guy you should know.

Just some more bits and bobs that I thought you would like about Mr Horsepower.

380498.jpgThe “Mr. Horsepower” legacy began in the early 1930’s with camshafts that were literally hand-ground by clay Smith to high performance specifications. His technical expertise was recognized by the industry and racers were mesmerized by the overall performance of his products. Although he specialized in camshafts, his high performance engines were setting world speed records. He raced Joe Guess’s Hydro boat and during this time a friend of theirs drew a characterization of Clay Smith – which is the now the very famous “Mr. Horsepower Logo”

Little known side bar to the Clay Smith history. Speedy Bill Smith’s wife Joyce was so impressed with the California Mr. Smith, she named their second son “Clay” in his honor.
True story…can’t make stuff like that up.

Tragedy At The ’14 Grand National Roadster Show

Folks, please, always make sure that your throttle is free and doesn’t stick. Not that we wanted this to be the first post for the Grand National Roadster Show but one of the contenders was approaching the viewing area to be judged when his throttle stuck, running over GNRS judging chairman Vic Cunnyngham, resulting is serious, though not life threatening, injuries. And the roadster is in bad shape. ALWAYS make sure that your linkage is free of hangups and interruptions or this can happen to you.

MOONEYES CHRISTMAS SHOW THIS SATURDAY DEC 7th

Well, it is that time of year again and the MOON-EYES Christmas party is all set for this coming Saturday at the Irwindale Drag strip, I shall be going with Dakota and maybe if I can get Jennifer my girlfriend to come along, that would make such a great Saturday for me.

The Mooneyes show is a big event and one you really should try and get too, admittedly parking can be a royal pain in the arse, as there is only really one road in and be prepared to be sat in a traffic jam for a while, as I have done every time, but once in, you can chill and just walk around the show, see the Hot Rods, Custom Cars, Custom trucks, Low Riders and Custom Cycles that are in the show area, the parking lot will have many cool rides too, so always some great eye candy to be had by all.

http://bangshift.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Mooneyes-2013-Xmas-Party-Schedule.jpg

Then there are the Drags that will be running all day, if you want to see and hear Classic iron racing each other over the 8th mile, then this is the place to be for you.

There will also be cool sounds coming from the bands that will be banging out their tunes and much to see, as there will be many Vendors to show you what they have and offer.

Good food, good sounds and the amazing sounds of the drags makes this a MUST see event of the year.

People attend this show from not just California, they get people from all over the globe and I have not been dissapointed yet, I hope to see some of you out there and just relax, and make sure that you take your camera, as there will be a huge bunch of amazing rides there and plenty to show your family and friends back home once you are done.

Check all the vendors out as this is the best place to find all your low brow and custom stuff, great for Christmas gift buying and of course, supporting these local vendors helps them too.

Everything from Tee shirts, Hot Rod parts, Custom artwork, pinstriping, and the girls can find all their clothing, bags and make up, so it covers everyone, mum, dad, kids an all.

Now- the Gates open at 6am but I will be up there probably about 10am and I really hope I get to see some of you out there, it’s an awesome social event that needs to be publicized as much as possible and this is the best show at this time of year.

Hundreds of entrants guarantees that there really is something for everyone at this event.

See you there!!!!!!!!
