Lane Splitting in California .

Motorcycle lane-splitting — the rush-hour time saver for bikers that enrages many drivers — may be poised for formal legalization.

California would be the first state to sanction the traffic-evading tactic, already widespread on traffic-choked freeways of Los Angeles.

The state Assembly is expected to approve the legislation as soon as Thursday, and supporters believe it will clear the Senate as well.

The measure would allow motorcycles to travel between cars at speeds up to 15 mph faster than the flow of traffic, up to a speed of 50 mph.

The bill’s legislative backers cite studies showing the practice is safer than trapping bikers behind cars, which leaves them vulnerable to more serious rear-end collisions. But their proposal has riled both detractors and supporters.

“Lane-splitting is inherently dangerous,” said Thomas Freeman, a passionate opponent of the practice who said his opposition movement, hosted online at stoplanesplitting.com, has more than 1,000 members.

While some motorcyclists applauded the action, the American Motorcyclist Assn. called for even less restrictive rules.

“We don’t like this bill,” said Nicolas Haris, the association’s western states representative. “It goes a long way in the right direction, but it falls short.”

Lane-splitting — a common practice in European nations — has been a fuzzy topic in California. The state has never expressly forbidden or allowed it.

Technically neither legal nor illegal, the practice has had the tacit approval of the California Highway Patrol and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Motorcycle industry veteran Bruce Steever — who commutes on the 405 Freeway and invariably lane-splits during rush hour — applauded the proposed legislation, restrictions and all.

“Those numbers make me happy,” he said of the speed limits. “There needs to be a codified law.”

The AMA’s Haris, despite his organization’s complaints with the bill’s specific language and speed limits, said he hoped a new California law would inspire legislators in other states to adopt similar laws.

Legislative bodies in Washington, Oregon, Texas, Nevada and Tennessee have already considered, proposed or voted on lane-splitting laws. To date, none of the proposed legislation has passed.

The California bill, which has broad support, is being spearheaded by Assemblyman Bill Quirk (D-Hayward). He coauthored the measure with Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale), a former California Highway Patrol officer, and Kansen Chu (D-San Jose), who became interested in the topic after a staffer’s nephew was killed while lane-splitting at high speed.

The speed limits were determined with the help of the CHP and a safety study by UC Berkeley professor Tom Rice.

@WhatareyoudoingDave? My fastest speed is 72 mph and I get annoyed by drivers speed to my rear end and flash lights for me to get out of the way. I know this is a tangent but I am interested in drivers thoughts.

That study, scheduled for public release soon, investigated 6,000 California motorcycle accidents — 1,000 of them involving lane-splitting — and concluded that legalizing the practice was safer than outlawing it, Quirk said.

“The study found that lane-splitting was safer, compared to being stopped in the traffic,” Quirk said. “Oftentimes motorcyclists would get rear-ended. Motorists just don’t see them.”

The bill appears to have momentum. It passed the Assembly Transportation Committee with a vote of 13 to 1 and the Assembly Appropriations Committee by 16 to 1. It now faces a vote in the 80-member Assembly.

If it passes there, it would face a similar review and vote in the Senate.

Until recently, both the Highway Patrol and the DMV published guidelines for safe lane-splitting. But they removed the guidelines from their publications last year after opponents complained that the agencies appeared to endorse a practice that critics argued was not legal.

“The ambiguity gave riders the idea that they had a free ticket,” Lackey said. “These parameters will alert all motorists to the safe practice of lane-splitting.”

It has also been a hot-button topic. Motorcyclists view it as a special California legal loophole. But some drivers view it as a dangerous or unfair way to get ahead in traffic.

“Motorcyclists know it’s not safe. They just want to get from point A to point B faster than the cars,” Freeman contended. “We have drivers who are talking on their cellphones, who are texting, who are daydreaming. And this other distraction makes it a virtual circus.”

Former Los Angeles City Council member Dennis Zine had 33 years’ experience in the Los Angeles Police Department, 18 of them as a motorcycle officer. He said he himself splits lanes, at safe speeds, but thinks the principal issue with the proposed new law is ticketing a motorcyclist who is breaking it.

“Unless the pursuing officer is on a motorcycle, the officer in a patrol car cannot possibly apprehend the vehicle that is splitting lanes,” Zine said. “The bottom line is there is no law if there’s no law enforcement.”

Lane Splitting is Legal in California

Lane Splitting / Lane Sharing - Legal in California - Road Sign

  1. Lane splitting by motorcycles is not illegal in California when done in a safe and prudent manner.
  2. Motorists should not take it upon themselves to discourage motorcyclists from lane splitting.
  3. Intentionally blocking or impeding a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider is illegal (CVC 22400).
  4. Opening a vehicle door to impede a motorcycle is illegal (CVC 22517).
  5. Never drive while distracted.
  6. You can help keep motorcyclists and all road users safe by:
    1. Checking mirrors and blind spots, especially before changing lanes or turning
    2. Signaling your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic.
    3. Allowing more following distance, three or four seconds, when behind a motorcycle so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency.

In simple terms – pay attention while you’re driving, don’t be a jerk and keep an eye out for motorcyclists and other vehicles. Oh, and please stop texting while driving before you kill someone.

To My MUM, You will always be in my heart!

Well, today is a sad day for me as May the 28th Our Mum will be cremated and her ashes scattered in a tranquil and very green part of the South west of England, where she will be with her Husband (Dave) once again. it is a tough time today as I am so far from Mums place, but I was there by her bedside so she could see her two lads were there for her.

MUM4

You think your MUM is invincible as she has worked hard all her life, working 2 jobs and then volunteering too, she was a very kind and loving person and now she is resting in a far better place and I know that she is looking down on us and she will be smiling.

This is for you MUM.

If Roses Grow in Heaven Lord

Please pick a bunch for me.

Place them in my Mothers Arms

and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her I love and miss her and

when she turns to smile,

Place a kiss upon her cheek and

hold her for a while.

Because remembering her is easy,

I do it everyday,

But there’s an ache within my heart that will never go away.

I have never felt as crushed as this before, losing your MUM is something that I cannot explain, she bought you into this world and taught you the best she could, gave you all she could and hoped that you would find your own way in life but always have her in your mind.

mum7

Today I work at half speed and will be taking some time to stop, reflect and shed a tear or two to say a farewell to my MUM, I will never forget you and all you have done to make me the man I am today- please try and spend time with your mum as you don’t know what God has in future for them.

Mum was taken early but I am sure God has a plan for her upstairs and she is now no longer in Pain, Cancer is the Devil and does not care who it takes on.

I remember Mum said to me once, ” Parenting without a sense of humour, is like an accountant that is terrible at maths!”

But I have always tried to be funny and humorous as life with no smiles is a daunting one!  And I think My brother Mick, and I will always be gregarious and animated in what we do and I thank Mum for that.

So today is a day for our MUM, gone but never ever forgotten.

MUM1

Below is a Video of Rowcroft Hospice and this is the Place that Our Mum was cared for, I spent 10 days with my Brother Mick, sister in law Pauline and my Cousin Julie at mums bedside, I have never seen so much care and love at a place such as this, Mum was in the best place and with a view of the wooded area and green pastures it was absolutely breathtaking to see how this all comes together.

I never realized how much a charity run place exists entirely on donations, and the cost for mum to be there for palliative care was almost $1000 a day.
So what I want to do is build a Motorcycle in memory of our dear MUM and then Raffle off, with ALL proceeds- I will donate to Rowcroft Hospice to say thank you for all their hard work and care that is mind blowing.
Mum was in the best place to say goodbye and at 2:14 am on May 9th Mum Passed away pain free.

I cannot thank My Brother  Mick and his great wife Pauline who is also a nurse, for all the love and care they gave Mum, thanks so much.

And to my Girlfriend Jennifer who I do not know what I would do without her as her love and support is second to none, I love you Jenn.

With a Carnival theme, we counted the ladies out and back again!
Thank you Rowcroft for your awesome care, you made us all feel like part of a big family and something that I shall never forget.

Ride On The Helmet Of Top Fuel Motorcycle Racer Ian King As He Makes A Fast Lap – Crazy!

Anything that runs on nitromethane is exceptionally cool and that’s a fact which cannot be denied. The fuel is the most intense “power adder” in the known universe and whatever engine it is being put through sounds meaner than hell and is a literal bomb waiting to explode while running. Top fuel motorcycles combine all the elements of over the top danger and speed and then the machines go the extra mile but putting the rider directly on top of a supercharged and nitro swilling engine. This video is a complete lap from fire up to shutdown on a top fuel motorcycle. NOTE: This is not a nitro harley. A top fuel bike is a very different animal.

The rider whose head we’re glued to is Englishman Ian King who shipped his bike over for a recent event at South Georgia Motorsports Park. The run we’ll watch below was the final round where King needed to close the deal and make sure the rest of his hard work from the weekend was not wasted. As you watch the video, pay attention to what King is doing and also what he is not doing, mainly we’re talking about the fact that he’s heaving his body around on the bike to “steer it” as opposed to using the handle bars to actually direct the bike. Handle bars don’t help when the front tire is way off the ground.

Take all of those elements we just mentioned and then add the fact that the bike is painted in classic Gulf colors? Yeah we know….too cool!

Morning Cup Of Cafe !

Tuesday already?  Jeez, time blows by fast at the shop and much to do this week, but thought I would try a little blog today as I do get emails from you, saying you enjoy my rantings and postings of things.

Well, as you know, I have finished the Rice boiler Motorcycle and I am stoked to how she came out, this is my own rode of which  I hope to bung a few miles on and have a wee bit of fun with.

Today I have about 6 exhaust systems to send out, some to England and Spain , as well as Denmark and three to the lower 48, so a busy morning packing, but its good to be busy and we try and ship as fast as possible.

We now produce exhausts for cb350-cb400,cb500,cb550,cb750 sohc and cb750 dohc and these are the Yoshimura type 4 into 1 systems. Available in Raw steel, Ceramic Coated Black or Silver and comes with a removable baffle and a nameplate.

We also make the Nickle plated 4 into 2 Dunstall style megaphone system for the 19691978 CB750 S.O.H.C. Model and people really like it, especially over in Europe.

I have been building bikes in the states for 14 years now and never tire of it.

The Most Desirable Motorcycles Not Sold In America

Oh, America. Our predilection for fat cruisers and absurd sportbikes ensures that we miss out on some seriously wonderful motorcycles. Sometimes because they’re smaller than our overcompensation would bear, sometimes because we can justify spending over $20,000 on a boat anchor made in Milwaukee, but not half that on an 1980s style superbike fitted with modern components. This is what we’re missing out on; the most desirable motorcycles not sold in America.

2014 Honda VFR800

So Shamu turned out to be a white elephant; too much money, too much weight and too little substance. Meanwhile, Europe and Japan are getting a refreshed VFR800. A reasonably priced, super-capable sport tourer, this is the one bike that’s equally at home crossing continents, commuting to work or tearing up a twisty back road. The smaller capacity and lighter weight mean it’s both easier and faster to ride and that it won’t chew through expensive tires halfway through your big summer trip. Honda managed to make this bike genuinely comfortable too.

2014 Honda CB1300
2014 Honda CB1300

2014 Honda CB1300

Who would want to ride a big, torquey, inline-four muscle bike made with peerless build quality, high quality components and an engine so smooth it makes 100 mph feel like you’re sitting still. Not us, it turns out, but Honda execs in Japan ensured that their dream bike was green lit, regardless of cost. It even comes in a faired version, turning it into a practical, all-day comfortable muscle tourer. Seriously, the CB1300 is an epic ride.

2014 Honda CB400 Super Four
2014 Honda CB400 Super Four

2014 Honda CB400 Super Four

Many of those same traits are present in the CB400 Super Four — classic styling, double cradle frame, inline-four, quality suspension and brakes — just in a smaller, more accessible package. Japan’s license and insurance tiers make premium small bikes like this one possible; it’s very difficult to access larger machines, so a market exists for nice, smaller bikes. Here, large men on Harleys would just scoff at it and waddle back to their be-tassled exercises in chrome excess. That’s a shame, this thing’s spot on the money for the youth and female markets here.

2014 Honda FTR
2014 Honda FTR

2014 Honda FTR

If Americans actually used bikes for transportation, then the light, accessible, stylish FTR would sell like Big Gulps. It houses a simple, bulletproof 223cc single-cylinder in a flat track-style package that’s ideal for getting around a city in speedy ease.

2014 Suzuki GS1200SS
2014 Suzuki GS1200SS

2014 Suzuki GS1200SS

Just look at this thing. Basically a modernized version of the original GSX-R1100 from the 1980s, the GS1200SS was made because that original bike was actually illegal to sell in Japan, where max capacity used to be capped at 750cc. This bike allowed riders there to re-live the company’s glory days, just with brakes capable of genuine stopping power and suspension enabling the 462 lbs bus to make it around corners. Here punched out to 1,156cc, the air/oil-cooled inline-four makes just 100 bhp and 70 lb.-ft. of torque, but all the original GSX-R tuning parts will fit, so it’s easy to get it making silly amounts of power. Of all the bikes on the list, this is the one that keeps me up at night.

2014 Suzuki e-Let’s
2014 Suzuki e-Let’s

2014 Suzuki e-Let’s

Practical transportation for one person around a city. That’s what motorcycles do better than their four-wheeled counterparts and it’s what the e-Let’s does better than most motorcycles. What you see is what you get: a little electric scooter with a dorky basket out front. But just think how great this thing would be for shopping trips and errands; it’d cost basically zero dollars to run and you’d have no problem fitting groceries, packages or puppies up front. But why would we want to use one of these to go shopping when we could instead take a 5,000 lbs Escalade replete with chrome rims?

2014 Yamaha SR400
2014 Yamaha SR400

2014 Yamaha SR400

If you follow the custom café racer scene, then you’ll notice that approximately 99.9999% of all foreign builds are based on this bike. Why? Shorn of its…humble bodywork, that air-cooled single is a real looker and the steel tube frame enables easy customization. You can bob it, you can chop it, you can café it or even street track it; basically any modification that involves pipe wrap, gum grips and flat black paint. As a bonus, it already comes with the round headlight, stock. But why would Americans want an affordable, good-looking, classic-style bike? I mean, it only has a single ‘R’ in it’s entire name!

Brough12Brough11A Little Bit Of History.

Why Brough Superior bikes were called “The Rolls Royce Of Motorcycles”. It’s a motorcycle magazine road tester of one of Brough Superior first bikes who printed for the first time these words.

One day A Man from Rolls came calling, requiring Brough to cease and desist from infringing his company’s trademark, or there will be legal retribution. After an abortive attempt to talk his way out of trouble, Gorge Brough hit on the plan of showing his Rolls visitor around the small factory where by chance his hand-picked team of skilled artisans was preparing the bikes due to be displayed on the Brough Superior stand at the forthcoming Olympia Show in London. To prevent their fingerprints soiling the gleaming finish of these show bikes, the workers had donned white gloves, allowing Brough Superiror. to infer that this was the normal modus operandi for such a high-class motorcycle operation, well worthy of being likened to Rolls Royce.

The visitor, a high-up executive at Rolls-Royce – was so impressed that he gave Brough the explicit permission to continue using the slogan “The Rolls Royce Of Motorcycles.” And so the tag stuck.

NEMBO INVERTED 3 CYLINDER CAFE RACER

Sometimes you see concept bikes and thats the end of it as the cost to produce, far exceeds the Customers pocket, but this Cafe Racer, seems to be a great idea and functions well, the 3 Cylinder motor sounds like a MV Augusta to me and hope that this gets at least to track racing as its a fun and unusual looking motorcycle that I thought I would share with you which I saw on grease n gasoline.

SO have a look below and see if this floats your proverbial boat or not.

Nembo 32 Inverted Engine 3 Cylinder - Concept Motorcycle
Nembo 32 Inverted 3 Cylinder – Concept Motorcycle

Nembo 32 Inverted 3 Cylinder café racer as a complete novelty in the world of motorcycling. The idea behind the Nembo 32 Inverted 3 Cylinder is that by turning the engine upside-down it can use.THIS is the Nembo 32 Inverted 3 Cylinder, a prototype motorcycle that’s about to be put into limited production. The Nembo uses an 1814cc three-cylinder inverted engine.

The Nembo team were testing at the Franciacorta circuit in Italy. The final machine will use a larger, 1925cc engine.

The idea behind the Nembo 32 is that by turning the engine upside-down it can use the crankcase as a structural part of the chassis without putting any loads through the cylinders or cylinder head. The front and rear frame sections bolt straight to the crankcases while the cylinders and head just hang there.

It’s a wonderful looking motorcycle and we applaud it’s unique look. However, the downsides to the idea are not in short supply:

1) All the delicate bits of the engine – the cam covers, cooling fins, electronics, spark plugs etc – are hanging down in the path of any rocks being thrown up from the front wheel.

2) The lubrication has got to be complex. Even with a dry sump and scavenge pump oil is going to try to collect in the cylinder head. It’s also going to work its way past the piston rings into the combustion chamber. Not good for performance, engine life or emissions.

3) It needs a long intake manifold to move the air intake up to a conventional position where there’s room for an airbox. That’s got to sap power.

Nembo 32 Inverted 3 Cylinder – Concept Motorcycle

4) The exhausts are in totally the wrong place. You can see from the design that they’ve struggled to get enough length into the pipes.

5) In terms of weight distribution they’ve put the crankshaft way higher than any conventional bike. That can’t be good, can it?

6) The swingarm pivot is very high. Again I’m not certain of the effect, but nobody else seems to want to do that in their designs.

7) If you were to drop it, the first thing to hit the ground would be the cylinder head. Which is fragile compared to a crankcase.

In short, there would be many, many easier ways to solve the problem than turning the engine upside down. Like, er, having a normal frame, for instance. All this design saves is a couple of bits of steel that would turn its two sub-frames into a single, conventional trellis. One that’s proven and doesn’t need a radical new engine design.

Upside-down engines have been around since the dawn of time (for instance, most German WW2 fighters and bombers used them – notably the Messerschmitt 109). They were always known for using a lot of oil..

MOONEYES OPEN DAY EXTRAVAGANZA

Well, was it that time of year already?

I looked at the calendar and there was the date em-blazed, today is Moons show !!!!

So, after catching up on a few orders at the shop, we closed the doors and jumped into the Scooby Do wagon and headed up the 5 freeway.

Soon as we parked, you could see that there was plenty of eye candy at this great Iconic building.

Then, the first person I saw was Dean Moon Junior, and wanted to chew the fat a little bit as I hadn’t seen him in a few years.

So then, as we walked around in the belting hot Sun, we saw all sorts of cool rides that were just chill-in for the great event that’s an annual gathering for die hard Hot Rodders and sickle nutters.

Today is a great day to wander around and look at everything, there was more than you could hope for.

I love all rides but as I have owned a number of Hot rods over the years, my passion always draws to this style of yesteryear and good memories come flooding back to my worn out noggin. I love this style and always will I think.

But too many to write about, so I took some snaps as we walked around with Dakota, digging the rides, the sights and sounds of the Flatheads and the Hemi’s whilst you can hear music playing and burgers fryin.

Some neat rides that came in and drove out, sharing some of the days hot weather on camera for some of you to look at and see what you think.

People seemed to all be having a good time and I was meeting some friends I have not seen for ions.

For instance, Me and Skratch pretty much started the same time doing our Own thing and glad to see he is doing so well these days , it was nice to chill and chew the fat for a while , as it has been about 13 years when I first met him in the O.C.

We hung out for quite some time, just having a look at other peoples rides etc and boy was there some cool set ups there this year.

I loved this Roadster, it just screamed at me to come and look, this really is a Nostalgic ride and you cannot beat the sound of a tuned Flatty.

If you are into the 1940’s and early 50’s Hot rod scene, well, this is where it all kicked off in 1948 and there were many like this bombing about these very roads, it must of been quite a site that’s for sure.

I am pleased that we took the journey up to see Moon’s as you are bound to always see something new or just pulled out of a garage and today was a good day for that.

This AV-8 something I really do love, I built a 28 Roadster when I first moved here and a similar Ford Blue too  but I didn’t have the cool Quick change rear end this guy has in his 31 A-Bone Roadster.

Plenty of Customs there this year too!!!!! I haven’t seen this coupe for about 7 years, so great to see it still around.

Check out the suede rides and the classic custom paint jobs these rides have had done.

I mean, how much sanding and masking alone is in this roof job?  This must of taken forever to get right and if I had a hat on, I would tip it your way mate.

Plenty of cool rides lines up on the left and right side of the BLVD and everybody seemed to be having a blast.

This is a good and fun annual event that if you get time to attend, you will be glad that you did.

1960’s rides are just the essence of fins and chrome and this was no exception today.

They say Mad dogs and Englishmen come out in the mid-day sun, well today the American guys out did me.

But, I loved the Hot Rods and Customs that were just parked up and down the main drag on Norwalk BLVD.

So am glad that I took a few snaps, as I know you will enjoy some of the snaps of the day?  It must of been close to 90 degrees today.

Hot Rods, Cruizers, Gassers and Motorcycles were all there for this event, so a little for everyone. from Choppers to good old Café Racers.

Just some of the great old time machinery that is still used today at the Moon shop, churning out parts galore for people like us to bolt onto their favorite ride.

I would love to own just one of the mills or lathes from this place, so much great History at this building and am stoked to be part of todays activities.

I’d take the sling shot frame home and hang it in the shop at anytime.

Then a quick tour around the workshops of moon’s just to have a peek at all the cool machinery they have. And also a few projects that look like they may make an appearance in later months?

Then we had some Japanese sign writer hand painting the moon logo on the fender of this guys GASSER 55 ride. I do lettering but this guy was super fast.

This thunderous Gasser was a total head turner today and when he fired up, you could smell the Av-Gas, it was awesome.

These are just insane for their time and to see these fly down the tarmac is just exciting to watch as they are as aerodynamic as a house brick.  331 cubes of Screaming power !!!!

Just tons of neat stuff to check out, I loved the Gassers that were here this time, just something about these machines that turn my crank.

Some real Nostalgic rides adorned the Moon shop and plenty for everyone to see.

A little something for everyone, I must of been to this shop 100 times and never tire of it.

Other cool stuff still all about the place were more Hot Rods and motorcycles, something that I will Never tire of.

Got a spare one hundred and twenty five grand kicking about for a popcorn maker?

A little warm under the bubble top and wonder once inside that your eyes bulge like looking into the back of a spoon?

Always great to walk around the Moon shop and see many of the cool old parts laying about , just as it was in the early days of Racing in Southern California.

If you could bottle the atmosphere from this place, Id take a 6 pack right now !!!

Now- there is a nice display case and shelf I would love at my shop.

Try and come down next year as the weather is always great for this show and you will really enjoy yourselves.

We had a superb day today, saw many friends and just generally cruised about taking in everything at a relaxed pace, the day was something I am sure Shige will be happy about.
