Heading to El Mirage Dry Lake for the weekend to watch the Racing

As many of you know, I have always liked anything fast but when there could be a world record at stake, then my eyes and ears are wide open, so this weekend, Jennifer and I will load up the truck and take the 2 hour jaunt up to the desert and to El Mirage Dry lake to watch the SCTA sanctioned races that’s held to close this years racing event.

This year I have way too much on to bring a Motorcycle out here but it was Jennifer’s idea to come out and camp, watch the Motorcycles and Hot Rods run as well as listen to the Coyotes howls and the stars sparkle out in the cold desert. Come on out and look us up as we always park up and camp out at Mid course.

El Mirage dry lake bed has been home to Land Speed Racing (LSR) for more than half a century. It is located just 30 miles east of a growing high desert community known as the Antelope Valley. Back when Land Speed Racing was young, a group of men that had been racing on the dry lakes for several years, decided to incorporate and create a new racing organization which would enforce safety procedures and promote the sport. Hence the birth of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA).

All of the various club members, SCTA board members, and all other event workers volunteer their time and energy to the benefit of the sport. Our events are wonderful for families and friends to join together for fun and the excitement that always follows Land Speed Racing. There are four (4) one-day races per year, June/July/Sep/Oct and (2) two-day races in May/November. Vehicle inspections begin on the day prior to the race (Friday/Saturday) and the racing begins early Saturday/Sunday morning. The race day starts with a drivers meeting, patrol meeting, announcements, and national anthem. The duration of the race usually lasts as long as the weather and course conditions hold up. All drivers and crew members are allowed in the starting line area with a signed insurance form and wrist tag. Spectators are required to stay behind the barricades, where they will have an excellent, but safe view of the operational area.Vehicles are lined up for the starting line according to their current season points standing.

All entries must be a member of one of the clubs within the Southern California Timing Association. But – there is a “Guest” option to race on the course for “Time Only”. All drivers MUST be licensed for the speed at which they will be racing.

Overnight camping is always welcome on the lake bed with a few simple rules. No open fires, no waste dumping, and if you bring it in, you take it home. Speed and helmet regulations exist while on the lake bed and are strictly enforced. During the summer months it can get very hot, so shade is a must as well as sun screen and plenty of water. There is usually a food vendor, and the SCTA has a sales trailer for all the racing goodies. Racing on a dry lakebed can be very dirty and windy, so casual clothing is advised. All race information for the event is announced on a loud speaker and also broadcast on an FM frequency (88.7) for all spectators to hear while at the lakebed. As of 1996, the SCTA decided to return to one of the original sites which hosted many LSR race events until WWII.

A new motorcycle brand springs from a computer

WHEN the covers come off the Vanguard Roadster at the New York Motorcycle show on December 9th the moment will mark the launch not only of a brawny new bike but also of a new brand with big ambitions. Vanguard is an audacious startup that reckons it can use the increasing digitisation of manufacturing to ride with the pack of long-established bike companies, such as Honda, Yamaha, Harley-Davidson, BMW and others, who are together set to sell some 500,000 motorcycles and scooters in America this year.

comp2

That might sound laughable. So far, Vanguard has built a grand total of one machine. At around $30,000, complete with a thumping 1.9 litre V-twin engine, it is priced at the premium end of the market (though well below the price of some superbikes, which can cost three times as much). But if Vanguard has its way, within a few years it will be selling several thousand motorcycles annually from a range of several different models.

comp1

What enables a startup to aim so high is the way digital technologies are lowering the cost of entry to manufacturing businesses that were once seen as the preserve of giants. That is especially so in the costly and long-drawn-out process of product development. From sketches, to clay models, component engineering and testing, it used to take a carmaker five years or more to bring a new vehicle to market. It is similarly slow going for bike manufacturers.

comp4

Some car makers can now do the job in just two, with the help of three-dimensional computer-aided design, engineering and simulation systems. In effect, the product—a car, motorcycle or even an aircraft—exists in a digital form where it can be sculpted and tested long before anything physical is built. It is also possible to simulate production methods.

comp5

This is the approach taken by Vanguard, which was set up in 2013 by Francois-Xavier Terny, a former management consultant, and Edward Jacobs, a motorcycle designer. Despite lacking the resources of the big producers—for now, the firm has just a handful of employees—it used software- in this case Solidworks from Dassault Systèmes.

comp6

A French company) to design a digital motorcycle before turning it into a real one. Such systems are benefiting from the falling price and increasing performance of computing power. “We now have the same level of design and engineering tools as the big boys, which would have been impossible ten years ago,” says Mr Terny.

comp7a

The digital designs also make it easier for the company to gain access to global suppliers who will quote the best prices for parts they need. Design files can simply be e-mailed to a vast network of engineering firms that offer their services online.

comp8

Once road-testing and further development is complete, production of the Roadster is scheduled to begin at some point in 2018 at a refurbished industrial unit in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York, which is now home to a number of manufacturing companies. That is another feature of the way factories are quickly changing: with digital engineering, cheaper automation and new production techniques such as 3D printing, it may be possible to rev up inner-city manufacturing.

Here is my good old Rice Boiler Motorcycle I created up for sale if anyone is interested in her?

 photo _MG_0038_zpsd7a38938.jpg

I built this machine from the ground up and she is a really head turning machine and I am certain that you will like this set up.

 photo _MG_0037_zps72da8401.jpg

Rebuilt engine and Carbs, as well as stainless Allen bolts all the way through this bike with many hours of labor.

 photo _MG_0036_zps905a419f.jpg

Drilled and polished front brake and Original Henry Abe rims makes this a tasty treat.

 photo _MG_0034_zpsaef6233b.jpg

Original Racecrafter early wide finned covers on this machine as I have owned these for many many years and wanted to use them on this bike.

 photo _MG_0032_zps0eae03f8.jpg

Full Stainless steel 4 into 1 exhaust just like the old Yoshimura of the day, made from .049 and sounds awesome.

 photo _MG_0031_zps67170f77.jpg

I rebuilt and drilled and polished the hub as well as new bearings in the rims, new brake rod, actuator and stabilizer too.

 photo _MG_0030_zps247b2412.jpg

Great oil pressure in this motor and I like to add Mechanical Gauges to my machines to show real pressure, rather than Just a light.

 photo _MG_0029_zpsd670d378.jpg

We made the oil filler cap out of solid 6061 T6 Aluminum and then polished it.

 photo _MG_0026_zps320b04aa.jpg

I rebuilt the guage and it looks sharp with the gauge face, i was the First to do this back in 1990.

 photo _MG_0024_zpsfa42e825.jpg

Racecrafters stator cover, a rare gem these days with wode fins.

 photo _MG_0023_zps83620d06.jpg

I used rear sets and of course drilled and polished the sprocket cover.

 photo _MG_0022_zps75f3f3a6.jpg

New chain and sprockets as well as Chromed safety guide and a one off Steel Chainguard makes this machine stand out in the crowd.

 photo _MG_0021_zps6a2bfdc8.jpg

Rebuilt forks and polished as well as rebuilt and polished brake caliper, and steel braided hoses.

 photo _MG_0020_zps6380c9dc.jpg

 photo _MG_0019_zps4df96487.jpg

Rare wide finned starter cover as well as rebuilt Carbs and cool Dragon air box.

 photo _MG_0018_zps36c39f8a.jpg

Tarozzi rear sets really fit this creation well and a good riding position for sure.

 photo _MG_0016_zps332b40a6.jpg

There she is, sat outside our shop.

 photo _MG_0015_zps36391aa8.jpg

We made the Mirrors from con rods.

 photo _MG_0014_zps1d7bfb30.jpg

New levers, new cables and even New Master cylinder adorn the Rice Boiler.

 photo _MG_0013_zps91894f28.jpg

She sits well on a Brand New side stand andhas a cool Boxed swing arm we made and drilled.

 photo _MG_0011_zps7a971c8c.jpg

So many details, but a great bike, New Fender was over $350 alone and of course bridgestone tires front and back.

 photo _MG_0010_zpse2e56f69.jpg

I did the gas tank design as well as the New seatbase of ours, the seat is upholstered in fine Leather and its comfortable.

 photo _MG_0009_zpsef177eb3.jpg

Root Beer Flake grips sit on the Clubman bars and is a nice off set color to adorn the Candy Root Beer brown the bike is painted with.

 photo _MG_0008_zps3640c904.jpg

New fork  gators, clamps and of course Fork ears that are oem really stand out and have out badges too. Also we have Chrome turn signals that we use on many of our bikes and of course we sell all these parts on our webs page.

 photo _MG_0007_zps82354464.jpg

The head light is a cool item i took from a Desoto truck and that is a nice little touch and sits on the cjromed lower tree nicely.

 photo _MG_0006_zps4104d6dc.jpg

An Original 1974 License plate surround really says it all to be honest.

 photo _MG_0004_zps5baa64ed.jpg

Custom shocks hold the arse end up and a 40 LED rear tail light lets people know what you are doing too.

 photo _MG_0003_zps900efa07.jpg

New OEM chrome horn tells people to get out of the way, gas tank has been hammered, smoothed and a stainless steel monza cap of ours fitted and then sealed before painting in many coats of Candy Root Beer Brown paint.
 photo _MG_0001_zps269abd45.jpg

I really enjoyed building this bike as it has so many features.

 photo _MG_0039_zps53749f91.jpg

Lights on and all works fine and ready for someone to cherish now.

 photo _MG_0038_zpsd7a38938.jpg

DIRT QUAKE

Dirt Quake is an awesome event for anyone to attend if they have a motorcycle,  this is held on the Eastern side of the United kingdom in a town called Kings Lynn in Norfolk. This is the flatland part of the UK and how do I know that, I went to school in the next county in Suffolk and used to go to Kings Lynn to watch the speedway there as I was an Ipswich witches fan and they were rival teams, the Kings Lynn Knights were their name but changed back to their original 50’s name the Stars.

So, in this quaint Saxon town you can now hear the rumble of a different tune, and thats road motorcycles in a cool event aptly named Dirtquake.

Below is the trailer for Dirtquake 2 but then we have shots that I have taken from the internet, via face book and the bike shed back home in the UK  and also friends sent me some pics  to try and show what goes on there.

We need it here in So-Cal as it would be a blast, no attitude, just fun.

Enjoy!

Dirtquake 3 has just finished and they had a great time, along with The Ilse Of Man Marvel “Guy Martin” has a go and enjoys it.

Use any bike and get some good tires and have a go.

So just some cool photos and vids to look at today to help you through the Hot times here that we are having weather wise.

There are some really cool photos that I saw on The bike Shed and Facebook and just thought that you may not have seen them and to try and keep you lot updated as to what goes on back in the UK and all over the globe for that matter in the Motorcycle fraternity.

I really like this event as nobody cares what you look like, its to have fun and in fact, they encourage you to go out on a limb and just have fun.

Hope you enjoyed the blog, we need something here at the local speedway like Costa Mesa, it would be Epic.

Pendine Sands tomorrow, what a great place.

Ok Gang

Some of you know that not only am I into the Motorcycle lifestyle, but I really have a passion for the Hot Rod and Custom scene too.

I had a 32 Three Window Coupe in the UK in the 80’s and tomorrow Pendine Sands will have their second meet where you get to race on probably the earliest dry bed speed trials anywhere in the world.

To be part of this would be an awesome thing, just to experience all these cool Hot Rods that have been restored or completely built to their style must be intoxicating.

Lucky for me I was in the Hot Rod fraternity in its early guise and we had a blast but now to see so many people and so many rides is just mind boggling and on such a famous part of the British Isles for Land Speed Racing.

So hopefully my mates will send me some photos and I can share some of it with you on a blog.

The Vintage Hot Rod Association presents:

2nd Annual Pendine Sands Hot Rod Races

28th & 29th June 2014

We are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Hot Rod Races to be held at Pendine Sands. The press coverage has been phenomenal, with Octane, Motorsport and The Automobile reporting about our time on the beach, along with the more expected magazines such as Custom Car and Classic American. In case you have missed what happened on the 7th September 2013, click here and here to get a taste of the action.

Dakota Races at Fontana Drags this weekend

Anyone around the Fontana area should see if they can make time to hit the Drag strip and wish our shop grease monkey- Dakota Kai Sun- all the very best as he runs not only against his pops ” Aaron “Twist the Wrist Pine”  but many other super fast and cool people that will be running against him this weekend.

Dakota is still the points leader in the series and sure hope that he continues to be in top form as he goes up against the rest of the field on Saturday at Fontana in the NHRA Summit Series.

Below , Dakota lines up at irwindale to race his old man and both on their numbers too, this is always exciting to see these guys run and everybosy in the championship as racing is so tight.

I shall be there on Sunday with Jennifer Dakota’s Mum , come by to watch some brilliant racing, everyone is friendly and you can get so close to all the action.

Come see the speed these nutters get up to and wave on 7111- Dakota Kai Sun- to another great weekend of racing.

Great Videos to make your day end with a smile or two.

Well, its a Tuesday today and I feel like crap, I am dizzy and have a headache that wants to explode, but- I must get a wee bit of work out and then this afternoon i am heading home to put my feet up and take some tablets and rest.
Whilst i do that, I too will watch a compilation of videos that i like on the net and wanted to share with you lot.
Hope you are not aching like me but if you are having a kind of shitty day like me, then this will at least make you smile.
So enjoy these nutters on bikes.

I love the sound of the little 2 strokes.

This fella with no shirt on pulls away and wheelies on his little rice burner .

Sitting at the line revving the balls out of these is great to watch and hear.

Jeez these bikes haul arse!!!!

This kid has no skid lid and flip flops.

I love this, the start line is a plastic bag with someones grub in it.

This video takes the kids a bit to get lined up but they sure are fast.

This would be a fun event over here thats for sure.

They aint slow, and this kid has no socks on !!!

These Scooters are so much fun!!!!!!

Some video’s for you to view at your leisure- Happy Monday.

Happy Monday- yeah, it soon gets here doesnt it? Well I thought I would ease you into your Monday, by adding some cool old video’s, then at your own time and pace, you can view them and see what you think.
the one below is typical old English styled Home movie type episodes, I remember wheh I used to go to saturday Morning Pictures as a kid, they would show these before the big movie came on, I have to laugh at the music, Motorcycles and a orchestra just dont seem to mesh eh?
So below, enjoy.

Next up, people ask me all the time about the History of the Cafe Racer, to be honest, there are many stories, and i have heard from old fella’s that raced from Cafe to cafe as early as the 1940’s in London but in the 50’s and 1960’s most cafeteria’s or milk Bar’s. all had a juke box, you would select a record, jump on your bike and race against others to see who can get back first and of course, before the record ends.
To even to get back first is some feat, but to beat the record playing, well you must of hit the magic TON (100 MPH ) and that too is some feat back in the day.
Enjoy.

Now, a movie that hit the big screen in 1964 was called the leather Boys, here is a bunch of clips from the movie to give you something to watch today, may not be your cup of tea but this was one of the cafe movies to watch if you were into motorcycles back in the day, I must of seen this 100 times.
Enjoy

OK, now to cross the waters from back home in the UK, we shall now buzz over to the land of the rising Sun, and the Cafe Racer scene has been followed for many moon’s and wanted to show this documentary of the cool rides out there in Japan.
Enjoy.

We get many emails asking about the motorcycles, the clothing, the apparel, the lifestyle etc, and we try our best to help accomodate every queston, and the reason that I type out blogs is that some of the things I am into, many of you are too. As well as being informative, I believe that the Motorcycle lifestyle that we are into is almost family like, you lot are friends of mine and people that I genuingly believe to be a big part of the motorcycle fraternity of Cafe Racers.
This year I shall try to do a little more and if I get the New Royal Enfield this year, have a few rides for charity etc, I would also like to maybe at some point, build a give away bike and the money used for that can go to a charity, as I like to help where ever I can and promoting the fun of motorcycling is something that I have always held close to my heart.
Being a leo, I am a giver, I will walk the extra mile and I do cross the T’s and dot the I’s when it comes down the completness in things.

Many people I have spoken too, really are having fun with motorcycles, people now have a healthy hobby that creates more froends and a closer relationship with kin, and thats a good thing.
I have also seen a lot of Father and son builds and that really is something that turns my dial, but the cherry on the cake for me is seeing how many Gorls are now riding and even building their very own machines, this is something I have always wanted to see more of and is now coming to fruition.

Japanese bikes, especially Honda, are still affordable and the good thing with these Rising Sun machines is that the Honda Motor compant envisioned servicing for many moons, so made more parts for every model, I mean how about this, you can still buy points, cam chains, pistons gaskets etc for a 40 year old motorcycle. Something that still amazes me to this day but is such a great feel of releif when I hear them say ” yes, we have that in stock”!

I am now going to try and make more exhaust systems for all rides and I now will be selling 4 into 1 for sohc, dohc and now the CB400-4 and Cb350-4, so keep checking our website for the parts pages as we try and add all the time.

Other things is that I hope to offer more helmets to people, some will be one offs that I paint and I am sure that you will enjoy tthe style etc.
I am also offering more tee shirts as i have a brand new design coming out that needed to be done.
Here at Carpys Cafe Racers, I hope to make more seats, some different handlebars, more head lights and even going to start my own artwork again, as i like to still draw from time to time.

Hopefully I can make some shows over 2014 and want to come down to Florida to see Jason and the boys at Dime City etc as we have all become good mates in this fun adventure of motorcycle design and creativity.

The shop will have a few more changes too, as I am trying to make it more workable for me and some other cool things in the planning as I hope to build or buy a 1929 Ford roadster as i had one before but had to sell it when all my mates moved out to go their seperate ways and I love Hot rods, the whole Nostalgia thing is what I and many are all about.

We have also just bought a New Miller tig welder and that means I can start to design a few more parts and get some cool things flowing from my brain to the table, the designing is what I love and hope to continue with.
I want to make it to more shows and get to meet more customers as I speak or email so many, it is nice to put the face to the name, and I really look forward to that this year. If any of you are or will be coming to California, how about dropping by to say hello? We are always pleased to meet you and hear how your builds are going, as we get people pop in from all over the globe as we are quite close to Disneyland.

I shall be treating my Alloy Bike to a New set of our 4 into 2 exhaust systems and I think my ones will be Stainless steel to match all the shiney stuff on that Classic Cafe Racer Motorcycle and then take some video of me riding the bike so you can hear and see how the bike is no matter where you are around the globe.

MOONEYES CHRISTMAS SHOW THIS SATURDAY DEC 7th

Well, it is that time of year again and the MOON-EYES Christmas party is all set for this coming Saturday at the Irwindale Drag strip, I shall be going with Dakota and maybe if I can get Jennifer my girlfriend to come along, that would make such a great Saturday for me.

The Mooneyes show is a big event and one you really should try and get too, admittedly parking can be a royal pain in the arse, as there is only really one road in and be prepared to be sat in a traffic jam for a while, as I have done every time, but once in, you can chill and just walk around the show, see the Hot Rods, Custom Cars, Custom trucks, Low Riders and Custom Cycles that are in the show area, the parking lot will have many cool rides too, so always some great eye candy to be had by all.

Then there are the Drags that will be running all day, if you want to see and hear Classic iron racing each other over the 8th mile, then this is the place to be for you.

There will also be cool sounds coming from the bands that will be banging out their tunes and much to see, as there will be many Vendors to show you what they have and offer.

Good food, good sounds and the amazing sounds of the drags makes this a MUST see event of the year.

People attend this show from not just California, they get people from all over the globe and I have not been dissapointed yet, I hope to see some of you out there and just relax, and make sure that you take your camera, as there will be a huge bunch of amazing rides there and plenty to show your family and friends back home once you are done.

Check all the vendors out as this is the best place to find all your low brow and custom stuff, great for Christmas gift buying and of course, supporting these local vendors helps them too.

Everything from Tee shirts, Hot Rod parts, Custom artwork, pinstriping, and the girls can find all their clothing, bags and make up, so it covers everyone, mum, dad, kids an all.

Now- the Gates open at 6am but I will be up there probably about 10am and I really hope I get to see some of you out there, it’s an awesome social event that needs to be publicized as much as possible and this is the best show at this time of year.

Hundreds of entrants guarantees that there really is something for everyone at this event.

See you there!!!!!!!!
