TON UP GARAGE HOT ROD TRIUMPH – Awesome Machine –

Daniel and Pedro are the names behind Ton-Up Garage, one of Portugal’s leading custom bike builders, two guys who consider themselves total petrolheads, loving anything with an engine. Being able to draw influences from all aspects of motoring allowed Daniel and Pedro to come up with the ‘Hot-Rod’, a truly fantastic custom Triumph Bonneville.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_11

A Classic Twin finding it’s influences in the “crazy years between the 30s and 50s, the golden era off Hot Rodding”. A refreshing custom born into a scene which could be described as a little stagnant – though no sports bike, this air cooled Triumph embodies a need for speed, fast acceleration and hold on tight thrill seeking.

The Hot Rod’s side-on profile is something to behold, low and beautifully sculpted. It’s clear the frame has been shortened and looped, tightening up the Bonneville’s lines. The air/battery box has been removed, as have any redundant brackets, leaving behind the desired exposed frame – now finished in silver, visually lightening this hot rodded Triumph Twin.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_12 (1)

Many agree that the early carb model Hinckley Triumph Twin is the pick of the bunch, technically simple and tuneable with the most basic of tools. That simplicity allowed for the swopping of the tank for a much lower and more streamline custom item, which not just hugs the cam cover of the 865cc engine, but envelops it – a tank finished in a classic paint scheme, described as creating a sensation of movement.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_3

The custom seat cowl is upholstered in black leather and grey trim, and continues the lines to the rear of the Triumph, enveloping the new frame loop before culminating in a small stop and tail light. Under which is the new custom made battery box containing a lithium battery, and the Twins minimal electrical system, which now includes a RFID keyless ignition system.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_4

Usually the unsightly rectifier can be found strapped to the Triumph Twins bottom yoke, on display like some sort of homage to half arsed design. Many relocate the rectifier to the frame rail where it can stay cool, but isn’t as unsightly – but here on the Hot Rod the unit has been upgraded and moved to under the seat cowl, protected from what the 18” rear wheel, wrapped in Firestone Deluxe Champions throws up by a custom made mudguard/numberplate holder suspended millimetres off the rear tire.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_13

At the front is a matching 18” wheel, again wrapped in retro Firestone rubber, with the dust being kept off the classic bottom mounted 5¾” headlight, and out of the riders face by a custom bobbed mudguard. Up top is a Motogadget Tiny speedo, telling the rider all he need know at speed, which leads us on to the handlebars, a specific choice as Daniel and Pedro dint want “to use the most common models…”These were fitted with custom CnC’d grips, capped with Motogadget M-Blaze indicators.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_17

Switches on this build have been kept to a minimum, with the stock items being replaced by micro switches, with a big red start button being fed through the steering stem, finishing the controls are a set of retro cable brake and clutch levers, with the brake lever operating the hydraulic system hidden under the tank.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_15

The rear brake also operates differently, rather than being fed under and along the swing-arm, its being fed through the swing-arms hollow spindle bolts, located just forward of the new rear sets and serrated foot-pegs, and out the other side and down to the rear brake calliper. “We’ve tried to have a lot of technical details different from previous models, we’ve built and have the bike as clean as possible. These are new challenges we give to ourselves to go further on the builds we do”.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_16

The Air-Cooled 865cc carb fed engine hasn’t missed out, being fitted with a classical styled stainless steel exhausts system and velocity stacks painted white to match the tank and seat cowl. The stock sprocket cover has thankfully been replaced by a custom item featuring a cut-out Ton Up logo. A much needed suspension upgrade finishes the Hot rod off, being fitted with a set of Öhlins shocks and springs.

TONUPGARAGE_TRIUMPH_HOTROD_14

A fantastic and attractive build by Daniel and Pedro, demonstrating that custom builders on the continent are leading the way when it comes to modifying the Hinckley Triumph Twin!

From Bonnefication.

New Triumph Street Scrambler

Triumph has taken the wraps off their new 2017 Triumph Street Scrambler this morning at the EICMA show in Milan, Italy, and aim to prove that they still reign king when it comes to the popular scrambler category.

triumph-street_scrambler

The new bike is built around Triumph’s new Street Twin, which uses their all-new 900cc parallel twin motor. The platform, which also spawned the new T100, T100 Black, and Street Cup cafe racer has been incredibly well received, with the little motor taking a spot in most of our staff’s hearts right behind Triumph’s new halo Thruxton R.

triumph street

This new Street Scrambler takes that 900cc “high torque” engine from the Street Twin and puts it in a new, more off-road biased chassis. Compared to the outgoing Triumph Scrambler, the new rear shocks are longer and the bars wider, which should give it a better stance for riding in the dirt. It also gets ride-by-wire fueling and switchable ABS that are unique to the Street Scrambler, in addition to traction control and a torque assist clutch. And of course, no Triumph Scrambler would be complete without that beautiful high exhaust pipe.

triumphstreet_scrambler

While Ducati have pushed their Scrambler further into the dirt this EICMA with the Desert Sled, the Triumph version seems to focus much more on looking stylish on the street. Triumph have definitely improved the lines of their new Scrambler, and the press release boasts premium finishes, graphite badges, brushed aluminum tank decals, an interchangeable pillion seat/rear aluminum rack that comes standard, number-board side panels, and a custom parts catalog with over 150 items to further customize the bike.

Triumph-street_scrambler2

They claim a lower seat height (but give no specs), and offer no information yet regarding the suspension length or travel, weight of the bike, or pricing. The one thing they do give us is that the Street Scrambler has a service interval of 10,000 miles.

Triumph-street_scrambler3

As much as I want to not like this bike (because fake carbs), I think they did a really nice job with the aesthetics of the bike. Triumph understand better than most that the little finishing touches on a bike can make a huge difference in the perception and overall happiness of someone swinging their leg over the thing, so I really appreciate things like the black bezel on the headlight or the aluminum bracket used to attach it, the rubber knee pads in the tank, the finish of the new mirrors, the bash plate, or the beautiful machined speedometer face.

triumph-street_scrambler4

Mini rant: I think we need to stop being so angry about scramblers that don’t scramble. At this point, the term “scrambler” is like “cafe racer” in that, at least to me, it describes a specific aesthetic style of bike. It’s a style that’s en vogue now and for good reason, because they’re cool looking and nice to ride. In the same way that no one is racing from cafe to cafe on their cafe racers, I think there’s nothing wrong with just liking the looks and riding position of these bikes and riding them around the streets.

triumph-street_scrambler6

All of that said, it’s still something worth discussing for people who actually do want to scramble, so we can help them get onto something that actually can go in the dirt. All of this to say, we’re going to talk about these bikes a lot and give ourselves permission to like them, even if that’s just because they’d be great daily riders for people who think they look pretty. Because we’d love one of the bikes in this category parked in the garage next to the dual sport.

Triumph-street_scrambler7

This thing will likely have the same issues as the outgoing model when it comes to going off-road but, if you’re into scramblers as a style, this thing nails it better than anything else on the market. The choice of the 900cc motor over the 1200cc one is an interesting one, but with a name like Street Scrambler, it seems Triumph are aiming at a much different market than BMW did with their R nineT Scrambler (though I expect they’re still going to try and take us on a fire road or two when they launch the thing).

triumph-street_scrambler11

I still haven’t had a chance to ride the Street Twin but, outside of the Thruxton R, it’s the favorite of the other staffers around here which makes me think Triumph might have nailed it with the motor (even if it isn’t impressive on paper with only 55 horsepower or so).

-triumph-street-scrambler-11

For those of you dying to get a look at the new Street Scrambler in person, Triumph is taking it on a tour called the “Brutal Beauty Tour,” which has over 50 stops where you can check it and the rest of their modern retro line out. For more info about the dates of the stops, which take place all over the U.S. and Canada, check out their For The Adventure site.

triumph-street-scrambler-12

What do you think of scramblers released in the last few years? Which is your favorite? Don’t forget, the Husqvarnas are still to come, though those take a decidedly different take on the look.

59 Club Meet Up is always fun!

Well, it was that time once again for us to sling our legs over our machines and head on out to Roscoes deli and Bar in Downtown Fullerton for our Monthly meet up, seeing as it stays light in the evening now, this was our first meet up here since last year, and what a cool turn out it was too.

Not only did many of our members turn up, the Brand New 2016 Triumph Thruxton R that I test rode earlier in the day from Southern California Triumph in Brea ,who kindly offered me the opportunity to have a blast on the 100 HP Beast, thundered into the parking lot, to the amazement of many.

The weather was perfect for our meet up and the bar was busy too, with superb Sandwiches to scoff on and beer in massive Glass Trophy style Goblets to partake in liquid refreshment.

It was a great evening and 18 Motorcycles showed up and enjoyed the camaraderie amongst everyone at this cool venue in Fullerton.

That’s my girlfriend “Jennifer’s” mean machine and her mum made the cover for her T100, looks wicked eh?

Plenty of people came out and had a look and, as the evenings are lighter now, we shall continue to have a meet up here at Roscoes.

Corey’s Custom Bonny is at the top of the parking lot and Very Hot Roddy along with pinstriped Skid lid.

Even a New Speed twin attended of which I shall be making Megaphones for and should give it a more aggressive growl.

Plenty of eye candy to take in at this great Bar and grill and if you can make it out one of these evenings, you will enjoy it for sure.

Nice to have this cool group with no attitude, just a passion for Motorcycles and its lifestyle with the 59 Club O.C.

We had a Plethora of style, Cafe, Scrambler and Bonny all on parade.

James O’Donnell Rides his Thruxton all over the place and got the Trophy for best attendance a few weeks back with the club.

This guy is a True Iconic Fellon, but thats just his last name. No not iconic.

Above, a good mate Steve Martinez and his stunning Black and Silver  Thruxton of which he rides regularly.

Plenty of things to look at at Roscoes itself but tonight it was the parking lot that grabbed the attention.

My Girlfriend Jennifer rode up on her T100, she loves this machine and is a New rider and gets more and more miles under her belt when she can.

Above, Steve Fellon with the “Slave Master “club hat, enjoys our buddies 175 Honda and brings back good memories.

Above, Amanda talks to Jennifer on how she likes to Wheelie where ever she can on her way to work each morning. LOL!

A great amount of British iron here tonight and we all had an awesome time, try and make it along to a meet up of ours sometime.

Fellon having relapses of jumping off curbs and running across farmers property back in the day.

The lads from Southern California Triumph Motorcycles came along and bought the New Thruxton R to show it off to all. But they had to have a few Beers first to settle their nerves.

Barry- AKA- “Bare” found a short cut to our meeting, great fella and his Guzzi Racer was sat all proud.

Above, Michael David Smith arrived on his trumpy, works many hours but always makes time for the club meet, thats dedication for you.

Some of the Lads chewing the fat, whilst I was chewing on a Sandwich!

Julie jumps on the New Thruxton R and that 1200 cc feels appealing from her 175 Honda thats for certain and she fits the bike very well indeed.

Corey and his lovely wife Julie admire the New Thruxton and Corey contemplates his Mrs blowing the doors off his Bonny if she bought it.

Fits this Thruxton R like a glove, its a fun bike as I rode it this morning and has bags of Torque.

Every digs the roar of the Stainless Steel megaphones as Julie hits the loud button and her old man comes to investigate.

So many bikes and a warm evening made this meet up very memorable and nothing to do with Kobe’s last game on the tv either.

I always enjoy our 59 Club events and people all seem to have fun, swap stories and genuinely  enjoy the evening with everyone.

There is Julie again on that Thruxton, its a wicked machine and Id love to have that in my own stable.

I can see the figures running through her mid if this is a plausible deal for her, this is truly a 100 Horse Torque Monster.

The Girl of my Dreams Jennifer, rides me me as much as she can, and enjoys organizing 59 club events.

More Trump here than Donald!

My 2013 Thruxton sits patiently, I truly love riding my cafe, its all dialed in and I enjoy the Canyons when I can.

Big J sits on the New Thruxton R and is surprised he can touch the floor- Barley!! LOL

This sure would get him to work a little faster, but he has a Thruxton 900 and thats so much fun anyway.

Maybe if the Lotto numbers come up he can grab this and keep both machines and teach his Girlfriend Carole how to ride?

Our mate Eric Dye has a Trumpy that you can never lose in a parking lot, this tangerine dream is a sweet ride.

Oh Oh- Is Corey working out what the Payments would be on that Thruxton R?

Seat comes off with a flick of the key on the New Thruxton R.

The Triumph Seat now a concealed compartment for all things you need with you, Registration, Glock, etc.

Our members all having a great time as we enjoy the now lighter nights and some fun rides coming up on the calendar.

Love all the old signs and memorabilia at Roscoes, it really is a great place to meet up with friends in Fullerton.

The Night is drawing in but the fun continues as we all eat, drink and enjoy a fun evening of laughter.

Carlos pulled up on his Thruxton with his New fairing attached.

With More Fog Lights than a East Anglian British Sea Side Light house, this bike gets noticed.

Carlos will be painting this Black with checkers, s stay tuned for more.

Off goes Carlos  with more wattage than a nuclear power plant.

This 2016 Thruxton is all machine as I rode it and took it into the Canyon, it is responsive, Torquey and boy does it Growl!

Looks great as the Sun was going down, if you can get a chance to take this for a test ride, do so as they are a fun machine but- watch the power in the first 2 gears and she will lift up like a Cutter through an Ice pack!

Getting ready to go and another fun evening was had by all, thanks for coming.

Ode and Michael David Smith get suited and Booted and get ready to jump on their steeds and head home.

Amanda gives us the secret Cringe as she struggles to pull her Scottish wallet from her Jacket, whilst Jennifer smiles.

My Thruxton with a New Look !

001

Here we are with a brand new look to my 2013 Thruxton, as I had drawn this up a long time ago and wanted the old style look with a new ride.

002

I was so fortunate to be honored as the President of the 59 Club for Orange County, California and that was back in March 2014 and sure am stoked to have that bestowed upon me and I do my utmost to promote this famous club to the best of my ability.

003

I have made numerous changes to my Thruxton and am still making improvements as and when time and money is available.

004

As you may notice, I have made my own front bikini fairing, similar to the Thruxton but extended two inches on the top – and of course I have the ears extended back to give it a slight Rickman styling, also I added my 7 inch LED headlight that really sets the front end off on my machine.

005

I am from the UK and as a teenager I grew up loving motorcycles and immersed myself in what ever I could, I loved all the classics and my first ever Caff racer was back in 1978 when we got our provisional License and had a 50cc Suzuki that I put Clubman bars on, cut down seat and fitted a fairing and from then on I was hooked into the scene.

006

I used to go to all the Rocker Reunions to watch the Gene Vincent styled bands play, from Joe Brown and His Brothers to The Rapiers, who still gig today.

007

If you look on the tank I have painted Ton Up and ask any Rocker what that means, it means to go over 100 miles an hour and back in 1959 that was quite a feat to accomplish. This has nothing to do with the TON UP clubs that are all over the place, I had this logo many years ago as we were Ton Up Boys back then and this term was coined back home in the 1950’s by the 59 Club members. I wanted to use a Triumph Style font and love the look.

008

I made the tail cowl too and my seat has the compartment inside the cowl so that I can store all sorts of stuff for my ride. You will also notice the awesome polished finned Primary Cover that I received from Speed Merchant and boy does that look trick now.

009

I have Speed Merchant covers and love the look, fit and style of these castings etc, and get many good positive comments on the set up I have.

010

My stainless steel Monarch Megaphones bark like a scolded dog and actually improve performance, hope to get a dyno chart on them soon.

011

I also make the side covers too and have an air intake style grill that really helps the bike and as I now have pod filters, these breathes well.

I012

Right now I am working on making brand new stainless steel headers for the Thruxton and the Bonneville, so stay tuned on my website for that.

013

I have the big wide 5.5 T.T. rear wheel set up with Wave rotors too on a stock swing arm and it handles very well but soon I will have new alloy rear swing arms that will be available for all to purchase for your rides.

014

I have TEC shocks right now with my covers I machined on them to give that racy look and am happy with that set up until I can afford some Works Performance piggy backs.

015

The bike sits well and I have Wave rotors front and rear, it corners so well and have such fun with this bike.

016

Just have a look at the gorgeous SM Finned Clutch Cover, it really is a piece of art and a happy I went this route as its kinda Hot Roddy!

017

From the right side you can see that I have my own oil pressure gauge set up on the bike and I love to know I have good oil pressure.

018

I changed the Front sprocket to a 19 and love the performance and fuel millage on it and now will be fitting a nickel DID chain to compliment it.

019

To break 100 MPH in Great Britain back in the day was a major effort and the 59 Club were the first Rockers organized motorcycle club and that where you started to hear TON UP, doing the Ton, Ton up Boys, Ton Up Pirate, Ton up kid. To break ‘the ton’ was a huge achievement back in the day and gave you some bragging rights.

Back in the day my dad would point if we were in the car going somewhere and would say look, “Ton Up Boys”

Ton Up Boys

My first Ton Up experience was putting my brother on the back of an RD200 and tapping him on the shoulder so he could look at my speedometer needle bouncing at the 101 MPH, it was an awesome experience and a sense of accomplishment back then, albeit it highly illegal, as it still is today!

The real badges I have from back home.

020

The FIRST organized motorcycle club in Great Britain and when Britain was really great was the club I am now president of here (the Orange County, California chapter) some 55 years later.

021

I wanted to fit my fairing on the bike and give it a slightly nostalgic look that I grew up with, having a fairing back then was not just cool it made you more aerodynamic, which meant you could go faster, I also used to be able to tuck stuff in the fairing like tools, maps and spark plugs, etc., and on occasion, as my throttle would stick, keep the throttle wide open on cold mornings on the freeway and put my cold hands in the fairing to warm up a bit.

022

This is the rear of the bike with my own made cowl with old style metal-flake gold paint and of course the famous 59 Club insignia I am so proud of.

023

My peanut style tank looks great in the new livery as green was just too common and I have had many green bikes over the years but always loved black and gold. you can see my old style European Fog light and oil pressure gauge to the right of the bike.

024

My ram air system style side covers not only looks cool they are cool and function very well transporting cool air to my pod filters.

025

This has House of Kolor Aztec Gold flake and it sure looks good when the sun is out.

026

So, here she is outside my shop and has so many of my parts on her, the Oil Pan Bash Plate, the fog light, the fairing, the exhaust, the rear cowl and seat, the side covers and the front alloy fender, all designed by me and available to you, too.

027

I have so much fun with my Thruxton and we have many rides to great places, check out meetup.com under Carpy’s Cafe Racer Meet Ups and come on a ride with us all, you will love it.

028

I still have more to do to my bike as I will be making a 3/4 Dunstall style fairing for her to give that early 60’s styling and something I really like.

029

I thank you for looking at my Cafe and love to hear from you, carpy@carpyscaferacers.com if you want to drop me a line or two?

030

Look forward to seeing some of you on the road, as we have many rides and start to go to more places too.

031

Stay tuned for more stuff like parts and apparel, etc., as I love what I do and enjoy meeting like minded people.

Just some history below back in 64.

Here is me on my Thruxton a few months ago taking Big Bear Area in, I loved how the bike handled with the new rims on.

BIG BEAR SPRING BREAK with 59 CLUB

es·cap·ism
əˈskāpˌizəm/
noun

  1. The tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fun, tom foolery and total drunkenness.
Escapisim– How often does this thought enter your cranium when you are busier than a one armed Plasterer in a war torn city?
For me, many times- And especially at this time of year when things are flat out and even if I had 10 arms, I still could not scratch my Arse.
So when Jennifer- my girlfriend, suggested a cool getaway would be to rent a cabin out in Big Bear Lake and spend some quality time with her and some of my 59 Club brethren, well that’s all I needed to hear to realize that this would be a brilliant time away to relax and enjoy some fun time at the lake.
This was the Cabin we rented, enough to sleep 12 and had all the cool amenities that we would require for a fun weekend of festivities. I was so amazed at the place and something I have always wanted to do was have a weekend away at the lake and here we are.
The place was awesome, it smelt of old timber and felt as though we were on a Nordic journey and could of easily mistaken this area for a vikings getaway camp.
Big Wooden front door what seemed to be carved by European slaves that the Vikings captured throughout their European advancement generously welcomed us to this huge abode.
Even Bailey – our trusty mascot loved the area and the 7000 feet elevation didn’t really affect her too much at all.
This was a super place for the 59 Club to have as their Spring break get away and I was sure happy to be able to spend time here up in Big Bear lake in Southern California.
On our upper deck we had a view of the lake and the boats moored opposite us and watching the boats go out all day in this super breath taking area was something to see for a land lubber like me.
With multiple levels this place was just a super getaway, we were on the middle floor and there was Timber carved wood all over the place.
This was at the bottom of the Garden looking at our cabin. On the top deck was tables, sun loungers and a Jacuzzi.
You can see my Girlfriend Jennifer at the top where we all spent many an hour, eating, drinking and enjoying great music and movies.
We also stuck our Club banner up as Andre Pine and his buddy paddy of the 59 Club San Diego made the trip up.
Just the perfect time to relax and enjoy the surroundings, no more phone calls, emails and grinding of metal for a few days.
We were on our way up the mountain when I grabbed this with the little camera, the temp was dropping fast as fellow Brit Mark baker starts to feel hypothermia creep in his joints, but we made good time and was fun going up the hill.
Here we have the Three Amigo’s Thruxtons sitting patiently as we stop for a bit of a rest and take in the sights.
Here we are on the way to Mt Baldy as we wind our Thruxtons around the twisties with Super fine weather.
Yes, we were having fun and as we are both Brits, we slung a few slang words about that of course fall of deaf ears!
    bigbear1
Having food, beer and relaxing as the 59 club blows off steam on a super weekend up on the lake. Below Andre and Paddy sink more beers than Submarines did ships in ww2.
    bigbear2
Below- The Three Amigo’s give it the Thumbs up as we hit the start of the climb up the mountain to Big bear lake, little did we know the temperature would drop faster than the inside of a British railway station waiting room.
    019
The Rim of the world, we pulled over to take a snap as this was some great winding roads and the view was breath taking, so made sure we pulled over to enjoy the views.

Big D calmly stands to get a quick rest, before we head off to higher altitudes and cooler weather, as Mark baker gets ready to jump on his steed and lead the way.

This was a great spot for a photo, and another Motorcycle rider stopped behind us and offered to take some pics for us, camaraderie is awesome up here.
    022
Enjoying standing at 7000 above sea level as we gasp for air on the mountain and with more riding to come, a super weekend, and some unreal winding roads to encounter.
    024
Another port of call and this time Dietrich stands next to his thoroughbred as we come down the mountain and stop right next to Big bears lake, a brilliant day for sure.
    026
A scary sight here, the other side of the lake was a dry as a wallaby’s pouch, the drought has really taken effect up here and California needs to wake up to this real fast!
    027
Always fun riding with these guys, sore back, wrists and headaches were a plenty but hey- you gotta earn it up here and we sure all graduated this day.
Our Cabin was just a few miles behind us on Big Bear lake and the views were just fantastic, seeing as we all had fuel injection we never lost any power at 7000 feet above sea level.
    031
Such a Phenomenal area, relaxing is not even close, this really does make you sit back and make a sigh of relief from every day work.
    032
I am sure there are bears in them there woods but they will lucky for us, still be hibernating, so no worries there as these bears certainly do still crap in the woods.
    033
All tucked up to stop 30 degree wind and any bugs that want to enter your gob as you gasp for air up on the mountain.
    034
Opposite our cabin is where you could go to the little harbor master and charter a boat to go out on the lake for the day, maybe next time we shall try that as they had a pirate ship there that takes you for a jaunt around the waters.
    035
Paddy and Mark Baker discuss the way to do a German Salute if you had a stump for an arm! well, it looks like it anyway from the photo!

A Day out with The Ton Up Boys!

Below is a great little write up  : By Rahoul Ghose | Photos: Manuel Madrid Rivera

They have a super website named. http://lamotorcyclist.com/ and here is our friend and co-creator of such websites take on the day we invited him and his Thruxton for a ride out with the 59 Club O.C. section.  make sure you save their website as its a lethora of information on rides, events, functions, tips and anything Motorcycle related, for top news and future attractions, be sure to stop by their site as its very informative and the good thing is- its right up to the minute too.

Cruising down an empty 105 at near ton up speeds towards Anaheim and a meet up with the newly incorporated 59 Club of OC, the pain of a 7am Sunday rise seems a distant memory.

Morning fog off the Pacific Ocean makes my helmet and dark tinted visor choice seem a little crazy at the outset — visibility issues aside — but now with the sun peeking through all I can think of is how smooth the ride is on Thruxton999 … rear Ohlins, fork brace, steering damper … all welcome upgrades which handle the grooved concrete nicely at high speed. A predicted hour-long excursion East is quickly looking more like 40 minutes.

The smell of the engine as it warms up — gas and oil mixed with a hint of leather – as well as the roar from my 2 into 1 Arrow, inspire me to crouch over the tank and pull a further twist on the throttle as I pass Crenshaw Blvd. The ton is done long before I have to bank onto the 605. The throaty roar of fourth gear at 7,000 RPM is ingrained in my psyche.

Since my very first bike -– a stripped-down, caféd-out Yamaha Seca 400 -– I have always preferred the racer stance clip-ons offer, and the naked look of a traditional café racer. So a day out with the Ton Up boys just seems natural … surrounded by Triumphs, Moto Guzzis and the requisite custom Honda CB750, with riders sporting their newly badged, black Fifty-Nine Club jackets.

The meet, organized by café icon and builder Steve “Carpy” Carpenter — the newly confirmed OC 59 Club prez, attracts three highly modified Thruxtons, two Thunderbirds 900s, a T100, a Moto Guzzi V7 Racer and a CB750 café racer to the Aléa Cafe, a few warehouses away from Carpy’s own Anaheim-based garage shop, and a mere hop away from the 91.

The ride –- a trip to Venice’s Deus ex Machina back in my own neighborhood, via Long Beach, San Pedro, and the beautiful coastal highway skirting the Palos Verdes peninsula -– promises some nice twists and even a few open stretches, a taste of the Long Beach Grand Prix course, and the luxury of crossing the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

There’s something very comforting, and almost primal, when you hear the dull roar of a group of café racers firing up. But it’s also the camaraderie of walking around bikes and talking upgrades, modifications, the very philosophy of café racers, stripping your bike down to the basics for better handling and performance.

For Carpy, the 59 Club is about nostalgia, but more importantly about that camaraderie, where members want to ride, help others and simply enjoy the moto lifestyle.

“If you ride a traditional old-style Classic, then that’s a big bonus … that’s what we are all about,” Carpy says, referring to the 59 Club membership requirements. “Nostalgia is a key component of the club, but not a big necessity, as long as you are into the Classic-style machines that the original 59 Club had in the day, or in the spirit of, like we are with the Bonneville, Thruxtons, and Guzzis.”

If you like motorcycles, people and promoting the club in a positive way, then joining the 59 club is as simple as attending regular events over a six-month probationary period and then going through the traditional, now 55-year-old, initiation … passing a current or past president at the Magic Ton.

Today’s excursion boasts some 90 F spring LA weather, and at least a few ‘Sunday’ drivers … no you don’t need to turn your wheel right before making a left-hand turn my mind mentally screams more than a few times as I go into avoidance mode around some four-wheelers. But then there’s the beauty of riding in small groups where people look out for one another … where traffic stops inspire off-the-cuff conversations … and passing other groups prompts a steady hail of acknowledging hand gestures.

Along Palos Verdes Drive we ride up quickly on a couple dozen Harley tour bikes in bomber-like formation, but slow down to enjoy the breath-taking coastal view. We are all heading the same way, after all. Even the stop and start routine through Redondo Beach doesn’t quash any enthusiasm.

As the ride wends to a close, we snake through beachside traffic along Vista Del Mar before the final Lincoln Blvd lane-splitting track to Deus in Venice.

Much needed coffee, more bike viewing and talk, a Roland Sands sighting … Westside moto enthusiasts greet their OC counterparts. Riders come into the Deus parking lot … groups head out, greeted by moto officers ticketing those without DOT-approved headgear. But smiles prevail. Just another Sunday in beautiful Los Angeles, the heart and soul of US motorcycling … and all before noon.

Available in Raw Stainless steel for that race look, or polished to a chrome like finish, these will stand out in the crowd.

We make these from.035 Stainless Steel and are so stoked at the sound, as I did quite a bit of research and ran 3 different types and baffles until I got the sound i wanted and I think I have a really crisp sound.

These are for the 900 Triumph Thruxton and you fit these the same way as your originals, so no special tools needed, the photo below is the ones we polished.

We believe these truly are the best on the market and boy do they crack when you twist the throttle, these are really responsive too.

We are making a number of different parts now for the Triumph Thruxton and Bonneville and also have a Triumph company interested in our product line, so that is a good thing right?

Royal Enfield Cafe Racer by T-Factor Bikes

Hailing from the Kingdom of Belgium is T-Factor Bikes a one-stop motorcycle store offering a variety of services for passionate motorcycle enthusiasts. T-Factor Bikes is Owned and operated by Yves.

Yves, now 39 was bitten by a motorcycle bug when he was teenager. Everything he does has more or less something to do with motorcycles and the culture around them. In 2005 Yves started his own company ‘T-Factor Bikes’ located near Ghent, 30km from Brussels. With humble beginnings the company is now a full professional and all around motorcycle store. Yves is joined by his 2 helping hands Filip, who has 20 years of Honda experience and Mathias, the young blood in the company who has also been bitten by the motorcycle bug.

T-Factor Bikes specializes in Royal EnfieldNorton and Benelli. They sell and maintain bikes but what they are most passionate about is customizing and rebuilding bikes at the demand of their customers. All three contribute to the projects and the end result represents a little piece of each of them. Yves tells us “The love for Royal Enfield started about a year and a half ago. We became interested in the brand, and since the first time we rode one we were sold and completely into Enfield”.

Whilst they were busy on another bike project they came up with the id

Whilst they were busy on another bike project they came up with the idea to build a Royal Enfield Café Racer. They had the idea and they have done it, introducing their Royal Enfield Cafe Racer. Yves runs us through the build process…

“We started with a new Bullet Electra 500EFI, which we demounted and we took the frame as the base of the racer. This is completely cleaned from all its unnecessary parts and painted in red. The wheels, front shocks, custom made exhaust and engine carters were painted in black and the rebuilding of the bike could begin. We CNC and adjusted a Beringer front brake disc and caliper instead of the original Enfield front brake. Together with an iron front brake line and the original brake pump the Enfield would have much more braking power.

We mounted the front fork with a custom made yokes and front fork top bridge. Between these two are the clip-ons and headlight located completely in café racer style. A front mudguard was modified and together with our custom-made speedometer table the front of the bike was complete. As for the fuel tank we picked an alloy type made for Royal Enfield, where we adjusted a seat on. This is modified on the frame and completely custom made, including the cushion. The seat also stores a lightweight battery and the power commander, which gives the bike more power.

At the back are the custom-made rear shocks from Hyperpro. These are exclusive for this bike and completely adjustable.

The heart of the bike, the 500cc engine is on the outside modified with black carters and red painted Royal Enfield logos. At the inside, the engine is changed with a ported head. This is positive for the airflow and together with the commander the bike now has 38Hp on the bench instead of 32Hp before the upgrade.  On the injection we mounted a K&N air filter, because of the weight and the old school look.

To complete the look of the bike we mounted the front mudguard and a fuel tank with back-step kit and airbrush the seat. Having the bike finished in the way we wanted makes us very satisfied. The Royal Enfield Cafe Racer was a nice creative project, it’s a fantastic bike to work with and we are looking forward to building our next one!”
