Plymouth to Ivybridge Ton Up Boys 1962

Young Motorcycle Racers are gathered by a transport café on the A38 Exeter to Plymouth road. They are the ton-up boys taking off into the night.

British biker subculture originates in the 1950s and is influenced by American pop culture and the rock and roll music of Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry. 1960s rockers portray a rebellious image emulating the cool moody actor James Dean with white t-shirt and socks, jeans and Black Boots with Fisherman socks, and of course , leather jacket, quiff and motorbike.

 

The ton-up boys create a lifestyle out of motorbike racing. The aim is to reach the speed of one hundred miles an hour in other words do the ton. The transport café is the starting and finishing post for races and games such as buzzing or chicken are played.

Chicken is putting a record on the jukebox and running to your bike and doing the ton and returning before the song finishes. Chicken is also doing a u-turn lean where the outer edges of the tyre touches the road used to measure a rider’s skill.

Been doing this for close to 20 years now here in Southern California, always fun and challenging to say the least- I have lost count of the thousands of orders I have managed to be lucky enough to generate, through you people, I am stoked that you enjoy my blogs and my parts, as well as builds and my reply to emails when you are stuck with your bike.

AJS 7R – THE BOY RACER the Classic 350cc Road Racer

The AJS 7R was introduced in 1948, and was almost immediately nicknamed the “Boy Racer”. It would go on to be become one of the most successful over-the-counter racing motorcycles for sale in England at the time, and even today almost 70 years later the AJS 7R is a dominant force in the world of vintage motorcycle racing.

AJS was the name used for cars and motorcycles made by the Wolverhampton, England, company A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd, from 1909 to 1931, by then holding 117 motorcycle world records. After the firm was sold, the name continued to be used by MatchlessAssociated Motorcycles and Norton-Villiers on four-stroke motorcycles till 1969, and since the name’s resale in 1974, on lightweight, two-stroke scramblers and today on small-capacity roadsters and cruisers.

THE STORY OF THE AJS 7R

Phil Walker designed the 7R with a single cylinder, single overhead camshaft engine – based on the lessons learned with the pre-WWII “cammy” engines. The chain driven overhead camshaft gives the 7Rs engine a distinctive look on the timing side, with an oftentimes gold-painted timing and cam cover sitting below the AJS fuel tank with its large knee indents on either side.

The air-cooled engine sits in a duplex frame, and suspension is handled with telescopic shock absorbers at the rear and Teledraulic forks up front. A small headlight fairing with a Perspex shield offers the rider a little cover when crouched down behind the dials on the straight.

The original AJS 7R had a relatively svelte kerb weight of 285 lbs (129 kgs), which meant its 32 bhp could be put to good use. Over the course of its production run the model was progressively modified in an effort to keep up with the advanced multi-cylinder race bikes coming out of Italy. The bore/stroke was squared a little from 74 x 81 mm to 75.5 x 78 mm to allow a higher red line, and the valves angles were narrowed.

In 1951 an experimental derivative called the AJS 7R3 was built with a 3-valve head, and in 1954 the 7R was further improved – the engine was lowered in the frame to lower the centre of gravity, and further engine tweaks improved power to 40 bhp (at 7800 rpm). This newly improved 7R won the first two rounds of the World Championship and took a win at the Isle of Man TT – not a bad effort for a bike first introduced 7 years earlier – especially when you consider the pace of engineering advancement at the time.

Wins for the AJS 7R would continue right into the 1960s, with victories at the Junior Manx Grand Prix races in 1961, ’62, ’63, and a 2nd place finish in 1966. Interestingly the 7R also won the inaugural F.I.M. 500cc Motocross World Championship in 1957 – Bill Nilsson of Sweden modified a 7R road racer into a motocross machine and nailed a convincing victory. Not something Phil Walker ever likely envisaged for the model.

The AJS 7R you see here is an original 1956 model, meaning it benefited from the performance modifications introduced in 1954, it’s also fitted with the high-performance works camshaft, and a light weight magnesium gearbox and carburettor.

How cool would it be to own a stable of these Boy Racers, a very cool collection and would be fun to race the 350cc for sure.

Sadly nothing is known about its racing history, but for those who’ve been looking to get into vintage motorcycle racing there are very few bikes better suited. Bonhams estimate it’s worth between £22,000 and £28,000, and it’s likely the bidding will be brisk when it rolls onto the auction block at the Spring Stafford Sale on the 23rd of April.

As a kid I would hitch hike to Snetterton Race track to watch the Clubman races, I loved the pits and the mechanics etc but the distinct sound of a Single also had that resonating tone I will always remember.

59 Club meet at heroes last night was great

Last night was our monthly meet up, this time Jennifer my Girlfriend organized a great eatery and bar called Heroes which is located in Fullerton, just up the road from the shop.

It was a great Turn out and we all enjoyed the great atmosphere, the Beer and the food that they supply at this superb establishment and we were looked after very well indeed.

 

 

Above is Cory’s Bonnie that he purchased from Southern California Triumph, I did the seat and rear fender ad its a fun Hot Rod styling.

Above you can see My Thruxton and Mark Bakers Racing green machine as we all park at the same stable.

A warm night and still light too, so next meet will be great as we can start to try other venues and enjoy the So Cal Weather.

We really had a great time at Heroes and next meet up probably stay n Fullerton as there are some great eateries here.

BIG BEAR SPRING BREAK with 59 CLUB

    Escapisim– How often does this thought enter your cranium when you are busier than a one armed Plasterer in a war torn city?
    For me, many times- And especially at this time of year when things are flat out and even if I had 10 arms, I still could not scratch my Arse.
    So when Jennifer- my girlfriend, suggested a cool getaway would be to rent a cabin out in Big Bear Lake and spend some quality time with her and some of my 59 Club brethren, well that’s all I needed to hear to realize that this would be a brilliant time away to relax and enjoy some fun time at the lake.
    This was the Cabin we rented, enough to sleep 12 and had all the cool amenities that we would require for a fun weekend of festivities. I was so amazed at the place and something I have always wanted to do was have a weekend away at the lake and here we are.
    The place was awesome, it smelt of old timber and felt as though we were on a Nordic journey and could of easily mistaken this area for a vikings getaway camp.
    Big Wooden front door what seemed to be carved by European slaves that the Vikings captured throughout their European advancement generously welcomed us to this huge abode.
    Even Bailey – our trusty mascot loved the area and the 7000 feet elevation didn’t really affect her too much at all.
    This was a super place for the 59 Club to have as their Spring break get away and I was sure happy to be able to spend time here up in Big Bear lake in Southern California.
    On our upper deck we had a view of the lake and the boats moored opposite us and watching the boats go out all day in this super breath taking area was something to see for a land lubber like me.
    With multiple levels this place was just a super getaway, we were on the middle floor and there was Timber carved wood all over the place.
    This was at the bottom of the Garden looking at our cabin. On the top deck was tables, sun loungers and a Jacuzzi.
    You can see my Girlfriend Jennifer at the top where we all spent many an hour, eating, drinking and enjoying great music and movies.
    We also stuck our Club banner up as Andre Pine and his buddy paddy of the 59 Club San Diego made the trip up.
    Just the perfect time to relax and enjoy the surroundings, no more phone calls, emails and grinding of metal for a few days.
    We were on our way up the mountain when I grabbed this with the little camera, the temp was dropping fast as fellow Brit Mark baker starts to feel hypothermia creep in his joints, but we made good time and was fun going up the hill.

    Yes, we were having fun and as we are both Brits, we slung a few slang words about that of course fall of deaf ears!

    The Rim of the world, we pulled over to take a snap as this was some great winding roads and the view was breath taking, so made sure we pulled over to enjoy the views.

    This was a great spot for a photo, and another Motorcycle rider stopped behind us and offered to take some pics for us, camaraderie is awesome up here.

    A scary sight here, the other side of the lake was a dry as a wallaby’s pouch, the drought has really taken effect up here and California needs to wake up to this real fast!

       Always fun riding with these guys, sore back, wrists and headaches were a plenty but hey- you gotta earn it up here and we sure all graduated this day.
    Our Cabin was just a few miles behind us on Big Bear lake and the views were just fantastic, seeing as we all had fuel injection we never lost any power at 7000 feet above sea level.

                     Such a Phenomenal area, relaxing is not even close, this really does make you sit back and make a sigh of relief from every day work.

    I am sure there are bears in them there woods but they will lucky for us, still be hibernating, so no worries there as these bears certainly do still crap in the woods.

    Opposite our cabin is where you could go to the little harbor master and charter a boat to go out on the lake for the day, maybe next time we shall try that as they had a pirate ship there that takes you for a jaunt around the waters.

Our Royal Enfield gets another exhaust.

Well, if you are looking at this Blog, you are probably interested or even own one of these Red Rockets? below is a Video i took on my little Camera and the sound really is quiet ccompared to real life, but- you will get the idea.

 

Now, even though I like the bike, the exhaust is something that I am not a fan of, so here at CCR, we have come up with a Cool, classic reverse Cone Megaphone that fits the bill.

This time I fitted the new Megaphone but I found it a little too noisy if you can believe that, but it needed just a slight tweak as I fear the neighbors would not be happy if I blapped home on this every night and needed to find a good Status Quo.The one in the video you see is just raw seel and, until I am happy with it, this one will stay until we make the Stainless steel versions which will be in Raw Stainless and polished stainless and that choice will be yours.

 

So, here is the last Video for now and to be honest, I am happy with it, the motor was still cold too and she still ran and didnt have to map it, so am really happy, the video I do next week will be with the completed stainless Steel megaphone and they will be available to purchase next week.I shall also take a few more videos of the bike going along the road so you can hear the other tones of the Megaphone when i change up and down the gearbox. Can’t be much fairer than that eh?

Triumph Thruxton Exhausts sound and look cool. The Monarchs

Here at C.C.R. we love what we do and I am now making Reverse Cone megaphones for the good Old Triumph Thruxton and the trusty Bonneville Motorcycle

These exhausts have a very unique tone of their own, unlike any of the other pipes out there, it took us some time to work out what we wanted but I am s happy with these.

 

Now available in Raw Stainless steel or a super polished Stainless, you will really like the way that these exhausts enhance your machine.

We have Aptly named the the Monarchs, obviously from my background and where Triumph was originally from, thought that they suited the megaphone.

 

 

 

We have just started to ship these around the globe and, as we ship 6 days a week, you will receive these fast.

 

Oh yes, so easy to fit too as all the bracketry has been done for you, simply unbolt your old exhaust and remove the old clamp etc and simply put the new stainless clamp on and slide the megaphone onto the header, put the factory bolt through the hanger and tighten the clamp and that is it.

 

If you are wanted a louder, yet crisp tone to your machine, then look no further, as these will fit the bill no problem at all.

 

I like them in raw stainless as it give it that race track feel and look, but that is up to you and you do get a choice when you order for raw or super polished.

 

We love these exhausts and will be manufacturing a few different styles, so keep checking back with us as we go along this fun journey.

 

As you can see, the photo above shows the same Megaphone polished to a high luster an the Noise is the same.

 

A great dress up kit and the good thing is at $460, these are affordable for the look that most people want.

 

This is our lifestyle too, we did put a lot of time ad effort into these, designing a few of these and trying them out until we were happy with the end result that you see here.

 

 

We had no problem with the mapping either as i fitted and roared up to the Triumph dealer to show them what we had done and they loved it and have 3 orders from the already.

We shall also be making other exhausts systems, as well as different seats, headlights, turn signals and cool pats like bash plates and shocks, so keep checking with us.

I hope that you like the look of what we have done and we are dong more things to My machine all the time, so this bike will see a few guises to help you see what the parts look like.
