Hiro Koiso Knocks 259.951 at Bonneville Salt Flats

At the annual Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, Hiro Koiso Racing returned to the Salt seeking more records and faster speeds.

Koiso had set the fastest open bike record on the salt at 227.236mph in 2017 at the BMST. JIMS / T-Man Performance 135 cubic inch Twin-Cam engine is coupled with C-1R ProCharger , modified 2006 Harley-Davidson FXD-I based motorcycle puts out over 400HP at rear wheel.

This year, aero dynamic aid was put into place entering the team into the partially streamlined class. A newly designed fairing was fitted and equipped to the bike. Following the shake down passes form the first day, on 8/27/2018 Koiso clocked a blistering 259.951mph on the measured mile.

This is the fastest speed recorded in history on a sit-on Harley-Davidson motorcycle. GPS recording shows in excess of over 260mph. However, during the timed mile, the front tire began to fail. Koiso was able to keep the bike upright, but extensive damages to the bike kept him from making a record return run.

“We could only make a few runs at the BMST this year. But we learned some priceless information from them. By knowing the cause of failure and what our equipment is capable of, we are going to go even faster next year.

Our next goal will be a tribute to the H-D factory Streamliner efforts from 1970, which set a record at 265.492mph. All things considered, we believe it is possible to hit the 270mph mark. We just need to work harder for it.” Koiso stated.

Despite the tire failure the team seized a 223.195mph FIM World record (pending ratification) in Category I, Group A1, Division B, Type II, Class 2500cc.Hiro Koiso Racing is powered by: JIMS, T-Man performance, ProCharger, Pine Valley, HRD Performance, Third Place, AIM Corp., WPC treatment, Fuji WPC, Frixion, MKS Engineering, Pingel Enterprise, Worldwide Bearings, Revolution Performance, Lyndall Brakes, Kraus Motor Co., Sundance Enterprises,Inc., HorsepowerInc.True-Track, Custom Cycle Engineering, Attract Customz, ATC Performance, Dynoman, Forest Wing, Kusunoki custom works, Strokers USA, SHOEI Helmets, 45 Degrees, Active, Pre-Stage Performance, Ram Pro Line, Full Gain, Red Rock Harley-Davidson, Borderless, Tuners Nation, Jaggers Construction, DJB Gas service Inc.

My 1928 FORD AV8 Roadster

Well, Hot Rods really are never finished, you just continue to wrench, change looks and idea’s etc and thats what I love about Hot Rodding, My 1928 Ford Roadster is no Show ride, it is no super high Dollar Performance machine, nor is it a trailer Queen either.

What it is, well- To me anyways, is a Nostalgic styled AV8 Hot Rod that you would of seen on the streets on Southern California back in the late 1940’s.

It is something I really have a passion for since I was a Teenager. lucky for me I had a Three Window Coupe in the UK but my Dream was a Roadster and to have one in California, so dreams do come true and wanted to share my little Model A machine with you.

This is a real Henry Ford Body and Chassis, and the stance I have as you see it here is right on the money, have a look at many Vintage pics and you may see a late 1940’s Roadster similar to mine, I wanted to keep the Side Aprons on, these are the step covers that your fenders bolt to. Below is Jack Mickleson’s Roadster in about 1942. I think it was the last dry lake run before World War 2 was underway, I believe Don Francisco owns it but have yet to see if this Roadster survived.

Back in the day, the Hot Rodders would drive to the Dry lakes such as Harpers, Muroc or the famous El Mirage and then strip the fenders and head lights off as well as the windshield and then see how fast they could run on them dried out lake beds.

This is how she is right now, still may change a few little things and then fine tune all the time, I am hoping to eventually Louvre the front hood and the rear Rumble Seat lid.

I used a Genuine 1932 Grill and Shell and fitted the Model A Hood to it with Old style belts, then used one of Limeworks Stainless Steel dropped headlight bars with stock Model A Lights.

Shorty shocks up the front soak up as much as possible, dropped I-Beam front axle sits this front end just how I want it , I then made a Spreader bar to complete the Nostalgia going.

Not as powerful as the locomotives behind me but eventually I shall build a Hopped up Flathead for this Jalopy, right now it has a 1939 24 stud mill with Edelbrock Heads.

I shall be shortening the exhaust pipes, I did have the original Bumpers on there when the exhaust set up was made, but shall cut them back and may make a Nerf Bar for the rear.

She is sat on a set of Kelsey Hayes wire Rims with Vintage style Firestone 16 inch tall tires and it is fun to drive, she tracks a little on the freeway but thats the feel I wanted.

I have a chopped Stainless Steel windshield, another common touch that was done in the day and of course sit lower now else my head would sit up too high. LOL

it is always fun to take out, this place isnt that far from me and wanted to try and take some decent pic’s, im no pro at this but I am really happy at how these came out.

She runs stock pistons but New and right now a stock cam, later I hop to build a little growler motor that has an Isky Cam, just to get me out of trouble if I need it.

Plenty of old freight train and shunting lines around where we live and whats great is to think about 70 Years ago, this was full of Dairies, fruit trees and Flathead Motors.

Sadly, more common than not, all you will see these days is Graffiti, personally not a fan of it at all, but as it was close to the color of the Roadster, I thought a photo Opportunity awaits.

One hauls freight and the other hauls Arse!!! LOL!

Sat patiently awaiting me to jump in and stamp the right pedal and head back home, so much Hot Rod History in and around where we live in La Mirada.

A great ride and more to do, I have a Columbia 2 speed rear end for it, but have to send it away to get Bullet Proofed, not cheap but that will give me a good overdrive.

Long way to go as I would like to have Oxblood Leather interior, but for now this old Naugahyde will suffice as leather is not cheap.

Hot Rods and Trains have always gone together like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Hot Rods use to try and race the train if there was a good straight away.

VHRA Vintage Hot Rod Association of which I joined in the 90’s back in the UK, huge part of my life to be honest and going so strong there today.

I shall always keep this Roadster, I drempt about one as a kid and here I am 5400 miles away and living that dream , totally amazes me sometimes and have to pinch myself.

I have always liked vintage stuff, be it Hot Rods, Motorcycles, Juke Boxes, Chris Craft Boats, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Thunderbolts to Dakota’s, Vintage is in my blood I guess.

Hope you like my little 1928 AV8 Roadster?  I really have fun with this and enjoy the experience of feeling what a traditional Hot Rod feels like to drive and work on.

Maybe some of you can relate? As I have spoken to a few people that have Motorcycles and Hot Rods, it is a fun and to me, a therapeutic Hobby.

I will still be working on this for many years but enjoying what i do, some things work and then sometimes they dont but, mechanical parts are great to work on.

I shall be selling Hot Rod parts and Apparel so will be revamping the website a little, stay tuned to the site if you want to see what I do to this Model A Roadster of mine.

Thanks for reading my Blog today, I enjoy doing it and people often email me to say that they like looking at what I am up to out here in La Mirada.

Let me know if you have a cool ride, love to see what you are creating and of course having fun in these days, I always have a smile on my face driving the Roadster, sometimes bugs too.

Have a great weekend and enjoy life to its fullest.

Joshua Tree for a few days on 2 wheels Celebrating the 59 Club OC section 3rd anniversary.

Entire industries have sprung up to foster a growing tendency of people to remove themselves from the rigors of daily life, especially into the Motorcycle and Custom World. To be able to get away from the Rat race, the crazy traffic, the continuous phone messages and just living life in the fast lane, to be able to get away from the hustle and Bustle of today’s life, we thought that a little get away is warranted, and as the weather up at Joshua Tree is forcast to be really nice for riding and camping, well, we just could not let this opportunity fall from our anticipated hands.

11

I myself have never frequented this part of California in the 18 years that I have resided here on the West Side, so for me, this was a great adventure into the unknown at Joshua Tree and, I must say, I was not disappointed at all. This tranquil part of the desert is pretty darn busy in the Summer season, with people crawling over more Rocks than than a 4×4 Expo, but this week was perfect to be able to visit this National park area and enjoy some well earned down time.

4

Tranquility at its very best is something that Doctors should prescribe when feeling tired and needing a little pick me up in those busy parts of your life, although taken in small doses, as Relaxation after a while, can become somewhat tedious if continued for a long length of time. But to be able to share these few days of vicarious distractions, I thought that I would try and encapsulate the time we spent in this Great part of California, many of you may have frequented this park at some time in your life, and many, like me, is somewhere I have always wanted to go and experience for myself and these few days gave me the opportunity to see for myself.

1

So, on the Thursday we loaded up the Van, we have a Big 250 Transit of which we fitted out with an RV outlet, allowing us to camp at any RV park, we simply remove the Triumphs, park them outside and then we fit the double bed which is filled with air, then the table is erected, the Kurig is on top of that and Jenn, My Girlfriend put the crock pot on and had the Chili cooking slowly as we set up campsite here at the Rv camp Grounds at Joshua Tree.

22

What a superb set up this place was, it is about 4.8 miles off the main road, set back by the mountains and Joshua Trees, with Blue Skies and the wild life applauding us for keeping them company for a few days, we set up camp and took in the view of the lake there and set the Fire pit up for some warm heat at night, as it does get cold this time of year in the evening.

24

Joshua Tree is only about a 2.5 Hour drive from Orange County and once you get passed the 91 freeway, the roads are smooth and all you see are mountainous areas and them bloody huge creepy wind machines, reminding me of H. G. Wells  famous Novel and Movie, The War of the Worlds.

Our Buddy Steve Fellon also from the O.C. drove up in his pick up with his T100 in tow, he had one of those Pick Up tents he wanted to try out and that took less than 10 minutes to erect and he too was ready for a few days of riding and, exploring this Rock Clustered area and boy were we looking forward to that. So, all was set and the first night we had a little ride around, and the weather was perfect but they did expect some rain in the evening and as we bought along some bike covers, we were OK about that, as the O.C. weather 2 hours down the road would have rain all weekend.

15

We rode into the park and purchased our passes, about $12 each, that gave us the freedom of the park for all the time we were here, Jennifer had mapped a few rides out and we were all set up and did about 35 miles of local National park riding, but the night was drawing in and we headed back to camp, where upon we lit the fire pit and Jenn opened up the crock pot that had been slowly cooking for a few hours, Perfect, with Jack Daniels and Coke, we sat around the fire and enjoying the amazing constellation of the nights stars.  Watching the Satellites cruise by silently to the crackle of the fire made this a superb start to the little get away vacation that was so lovingly warranted.

We then made our way to our own little covered rooms, Steve wrapped up as he was trying the tent out for the first time and I tell ya – the temperature dropped pretty quickly at night, so I was glad that Jenn and I had an electric heater going in the Van.  The night was quite a long one for me as the heater kept coming on and off as it has a Thermostat and I tossed and turned for quite some time, but Morning came and although chilly, it warmed up as the Sun emerged from behind the mountain.

skull rock

We gassed up and headed out for a ride around, it was a fun day, taking in the Parks variety of Joshua Trees and Cacti etc, we rode the countryside and enjoyed the scenery, one stop was Skull Rock, amazing to see how different forms have been made over the Millions of years and this Rock looked like a Skull for sure, albeit I was more concerned of Bloody tarantulas sneaking up on me as I took photos or walked up and around the Rock formations, it sure made Jennifer and Steve laugh as I scoured the area for wild arachnids.

26

Whilst heading back to camp and the weather started to get colder, I noticed that all of a sudden my Triumph was not handling as it should, and as I crossed the center line IO could definatley feel I had a major issue, we got to the turning of the road for the campsite and as I stopped I looked at the front tire, and that was fine, looked at the back, Oh Feck!  A puncture.

28

I now had to ride Conservatively as the rear tire was now starting to be as flat as three week old Soda, I had another 4.8 miles of bumpy road to navigate, and, trying not to destroy the wide 170 Tire, proved top be somewhat demanding, as I struggled with the steering, I placed all my weight as far up front of the bike as I could, my poor old Walnuts thought they were being inserted into a cement mixer as we trundled up the road, in pitch dark too, that 4.8 Miles seemed to be an eternity.  Steve Fellon was sweep so made sure  we could be seen as he followed me at at 40 mph, I really need to save the tire and the rim, as these were $3000 wheels and being Aluminum, they could easily get out of shape if you receive a puncture and ride on an uneven road.

dei sleeve3

Turning into the camp was an adventure as the bike wanted to throw me off like a Novice Bull Rider, but I grabbed the Bull by the horns and Navigated the best I could up the track of the camp, that was no easy task, as the driveway was dirt and sand, so wobbling around like a camel with a bad foot, I somehow managed to maneuver this machine up to the Van and park up.

7

Where the hell was I going to get a tube for this rear rim, its not a stock rear wheel for the Thruxton, its a Friday night and I am in the desert, so as I prayed we had a phone signal, I looked around the internet and found 4 numbers of bike shops, 2 of them could not help at all, the third shop said he could do it but would charge $500, Feck that!  But the last number was just a voice mail, and being a Friday after hours, it looked like my days of riding this weekend and had buggered off with the Sun.

30

About 45 minutes later my phone rang and the guy I had rang last was happy to help, he said he had a tube and could help me if I could get the bike down to his place in the Morning, lucky for me, Steve Fellon had his U-Haul trailer, so in the morning we loaded my Thruxton up and drove about 16 miles to a dodgy housing area in the desert, where this guy had a little workshop, Steve had a hammer and a baseball bat in the truck just in case we needed to fight our way back out of this town, but lucky for us we had no issues and the guy was super cool and only $100 charge for the tube and fitting, so a relived rider I was and we headed back to the camp grounds and unloaded my Steed.

29

After that we were all good and set about to get a little bit of breakfast to give us the energy to have a good long ride and check out these great park areas that Jennifer and worked out a fun route to ride on our Triumphs.

31

We rode down the bumpy Road to the main drag and there the roads were great, we needed to fill up our gas tanks and our bellys for the days journey, of which Jennifer will be leading, all weekend, how cool is that? Love my Girl.

25

The roads in the park are well maintained and wide, we loved the straights as well as the big sweeping bends, making it such a fun and unique experience. And taking in all the different Rock formations was super cool.

32

It was like being in another world to be honest, then you would hear the odd person drive by or a tourist flip flopping behind us as they took photos of anything that was not moving.

33

We had plenty of time, nobody racing about like a mad man and it was such a great peaceful time away from the real world and loved every minute of it.

35

Some of the Boulders were Bloody enormous as you can see with Jennifer and Mr Fellon try and stop this Rock from sliding down the hill, to be honest, this photo does not do the size of this thing, any justice what so ever.

37

Well, here is a little better photo that I took with my phone, you can see that there is not much stopping this huge thing to roll off down to Joshua Town and squash it.

36

A weekend of Great riding and sight seeing and were really blessed with the weather for this time of year, and if we had chosen last week, it would of been really wet and miserably cold too.

38

I would not want to fall into this Love heart shaped Cactus, but is always great to see one in its natural environment and there were plenty of those out here for sure.

39

See what I mean, these we saw on the ride through the park and they seemed to be doing really well considering all the wild fires that have happened recently.

20

So many different Rock formations and great winding Roads, we really enjoyed this area, and- with a 35 MPH speed limit, no Road Rocket Riders came belting passed us, it was great just to pull over and admire the view and just take in some of California’s great Desert areas.

41

We would ride until we saw something that was cool to look at for a little while and this we did many times, but, by 5pm, the temperature would kick you right in the saddlebags and it was time to turn around and head back to the camp site for a Brew.

44

What I enjoy about being on the old Mother road was that you get to see some cool things, and as you can see here, this fella used an old Bomb to use as a marker spot for his mail box, I love old stuff like this and had to stop and take a pic, then I had to ride pretty hard to catch up with the others, as I hadn’t planned a stop, but it was fun catching them up I tell ya.

45

The Next morning when we all had a coffee, we set off on our machines into Joshua Tree for some Brekky, chose the Crossroads Cafe as many people give it the thumbs up for their food and warm feeling the place gives, and they were not wrong.

47

We went with Mikes Mess and it was bloody awesome, a good belly full of grub is much needed when you have a ride to take and this hit the spot and more.

46

Loved this photo up on the shelf of a bloke racing around on his HRD, what I would give to have that machine and wonder where it is now?

48

Jenn took the lead and we went on a 250 mile ride, heading through all the little farms, past a few date Palms and strawberry fields, there was some great straights roads, buit we did get a little rain for maybe 30 minutes and that was it, didn’t deter us one bit, we headed forward, sometimes at 80 MPH and got to Slab City .

50

A place where they should of filmed Mad max, if you ever get the chance to take a look at this place, do so, people from all over the globe come to this old military base to see the oddities of life on this unique few acres of wasteland.

49

The bikes were getting some road grime, but all part of the trip, we rode around for about an hour here, taking in the sights, and turned around and headed back towards the national Park as the weather was changing and getting dark.

51

Behind the Thruxton is Salvation Mountain, made up of old straw bales and covered in Latex paint by a bunch of complete nutters if you ask me, but- as long as they are happy, more power to them, people donate paint and things all the time to keep the Mountain decorated, as I am sure the desert weather tears it up fairly quickly.

52

As the light was starting to fall, we headed back as we had over 100 miles left to go and knew that it would be pitch black in the park, so without haste, we made quick time and wanted to beat the weather as it had forecast some rain.

84

As we belted through the farms, I grit my teeth as we headed through the Border patrol, you never know what they think when they hear a British accent, but lucky for us it had gotten cold and they all buggered off. LOL!

71

Some great Rock area’s on this trip too, we got to this part in the park and the cops had blocked off the road, they were making a commercial about 1/4 mile ahead, so we had to wait, Jenn went for a little walk, and me and Steve laughed as this old Asian lady went behind a bush to drop a few things off.

72

This place is called Box Canyon and not only were the Rocks so cool to see and so different from the other park of this park, the roads were really smooth and the bends in the road were wide, it was the best part of the ride for me.

74

We all enjoyed this area but had to keep your eyes out for critters such as snakes and Road Runners as the light was starting to fall and things tend to head back home too.

75

Pulling over to take some of the sights in, it was pretty quiet here too and no traffic, this is a great ride to take in the park and recommend it to anyone if you are in the area.

Really good fun on this adventurous ride and kudos to jenn for mapping it out and, taking the lead too, she loved to ride her Bonneville and I was so stoked for her to have a go.

83

Shame this wasn’t 10 minutes from home as I would make sure I took this route everyday, looks like someone was lighting up their rear end earlier on and, I think it was for the TV commercial as they had some muscle car under a cover a little further along the road.

87

No stress, no need to speed on this road, there is also a 35 mph speed limit too, but the roads were just in great condition, and no trash blowing around, just a good place to take in the area at a fun speed.

89

We took a couple of photos and could feel the temperature dropping, and out in the desert at this time of year it gets cold and bloody quick too, we all had intercom radios in our helmets, thats why I have a full face on, so we could shout out to each other if we saw something cool, it worked out to be a great set up. We managed to get back in the dark, but a great trip that day.

53

Next morning we got up and headed out for another jaunt, the weather was overcast but we wanted to see a little more of this great National park before we headed back home to Orange County.

53

Popped in town to get Gas, this is Old Josh, Originally at an old Muffler shop, and now situated at this new restaurant that is being built and looks pretty cool, my buddy Dan Collins designed the Tee Shirt for this place and will be picking one of those up.

54

The ole Trumpy did well and I am so glad I had the heat wrap as it kept my legs toasty when the temperature started to drop off, and when my hands started to fade with Goatskin gloves, a quick grab of these pipes for a few seconds warmed my hands up fast.

56

As you can see, the clouds are coming in and there is rain headed towards us, but we are already riding, so no biggie and we continue to make tracks, these roads are great to ride on and look at them sweeping bends.

59

Loved these turns, and even when it rained, there was no traffic as such, so a steady ride was all that was required, and the rain only lasted half an hour and never saw any more after that.

62

Plenty of time to pull over at places and stretch your legs and no traffic, well that was awesome to experience, as the OC is always busy, so- No stress and we all had a blast.

68

We pulled over as there was a parking area, a few people were there already, observing the Cactus was starting to flower, unusual at this time of year but so many of them too, just had to stop and take this all in.

69

My Girl taking some of the sights and sounds in, we could not believe how the terrain changes in only a few miles and when we saw something cool to have a look at well we did.

64

No mistaken to where we are, I mean, when you see cactus then its in the desert and this was so cool for me to see, reminds me of many old films me and my brother used to watch and wish we were right there.

65I loved looking at all this, forgot about the snakes and spiders for a few seconds as I am sure there were plenty in that area, just waiting to get someone who walked by.

66

Acres and Acres of these, I think we caught these at just the right time and glad that Jennifer decided to take this route in the park.

67

Last shot of the Cactus, but a fun morning ride and seeing something you do not often have a chance of seeing, is always a bonus.

We rode a long day and headed back for time by the fire pit , but the weather was getting cold, so into the RV with the heater on, next morning we loaded up and headed home, we had great weather compared to OC, as they had rain all weekend, so- A perfect getaway.

Jenn did a fantastic job and we are now planning our next riding adventure and shall be going to Sequoia and riding through the big Red tree’s, thats another tick in the box, so stay tuned. 90

There is so much to see here and this will not be the last time that we camp out here, thats what I love about the Joshua National park as there is simply so much to explore.

18 Years has Flown by.

18 years has flown by since I first started building bikes here in California and people remember the Black K5 Honda Cafe I created and for quite some time I had emails from customers informing me that they have had my bike as their screen saver at home or at work.  I will never forget that and my passion has always been with Motorcycles and parts.  I strive to continue is offering more parts for the bikes I create as well as a few other brands too.

Below is the old K5 I had from bits and pieces and wanted to create a cool Caff bike to ride around on whilst I built other bikes and my Hot Rod.

carpyk

Below: As you can see it turned out so different than the bikes that were out on the road at that time and boy did it turn heads.

carpy K5

This was a fun bike, I rode it to many places and took it to over 30 shows, later on making the cover of Motorcycle Classics Magazine, I still love that bike. It sure was a blast to ride.

canyon Carpy

So thank you for supporting me for all these years, I am thinking of building something similar for my 20th anniversary, so will start to collect parts as the Original is in Canada.

I shall continue to make parts like Exhausts and seats etc as well as offering bars, mirrors, lights and all the other goodies that you may want for your project.

I love what I do and enjoy helping customers out with their builds, this is a fun time in my life and I look forward to designing more Custom parts to offer.

Cannot believe that this time has gone so fast, over 1000 exhausts sold, 4000 turn signals, 200 Swing arms, 600 headlights, 2000 handlebars and continue selling.

Rice Boiler

I have always helped people and enjoy talking on the phone or by email etc and offering everything from parts to complete builds.

The Cyclone was a fun CB750 Honda I created for a gentleman in Texas, and still has it today.

Another old video I did at the shop with the GCR cafe Bike I created.

Little bit of work on Customers CB750F today

Had a customer come in with an old 1975 Super sport, just wants a few little things changed so he can ride for a while and then sell it, these jobs sometimes can get out of hand as you are dealing with unknown history and previous issues. Knackered exhaust, no side covers JB Weld on things, ugh! Some of these things do become a big task and would of been better if they left it alone, but, we all have to start somewhere and I know I can help this fella out and get this bike running and looking to how he wants it.  Working on a small income is hard, I have been there but this will be a fun machine and he will get miles of smiles once I have completed the tasks at hand on this Super Sport.

27459479_10156000263276760_4650784936631111679_n

Above is the before and after as you can see the bike had an old Chromed Kerker Muffler on the unit but, it had no Baffle at all and was so loud, it would let off peoples car alarms every time you fired the thing up, so I made a smaller custom one from steel and added a kick up and baffle, it now resonates nicely and looks a whole lot better I think.

27545115_10156000263216760_8008564208194141516_n

Above, you can see that I also changed out the rear shocks, as his ones were rock solid and rusty, so now he has some comfort on his machine that will soak any bumps up from the tarmac.

27654462_10156000263076760_4210414310045140770_n

Removed the rear Master Cylinder bracket and Polished it to at least clean the area up a bit as well as polishing the reservoir cap too, makes a difference I think.

cb750

Above is before and below is how it is now but still more to do as I need to make a steel seat base and then cut some high density foam and upholster it, not sure what color material he wants but will call him once I get to that part of the work that is needed to be completed. I also have to figure out his tail light and turn signal situation as well.

Next up was to remove the stock headlight and fit one of my LED versions that has the internal turn signals, this, not need the old bog ugly stock ones. be seen, be safe, thats the most important thing on a Motorcycle and with the halogen bulb and super bright Amber LED internals signals will make sure people know your intentions on the road.

So there ya go, just a few little things I did, am now going to re-route the throttle cables as they said when they fitted them they tended to bind, so will address that next, I made some side covers and they are now on, just need to be painted to match tank when he repaints the stock tank later but so far I have got a lot of the issues out of the way.

Triumph Bonneville gets the Stealthy Look.

Here we are again

Where does time go? I try and type up a blog as quick as I can, but, being a 2 fingered key Board picker, I cant get as much down on the website as I would like, but none the less I try and seem to get a following for the Motorcycles that I see on the net etc and tend to grab my beady eye and then I will do a quick Blog on it.

It brings me to this Twinline Triumph Bonneville, Another Australian Motorcycle but, before this transformation came about, the owner had had a bit of a to do with the tarmac. the exhaust was knackered, Gas tank had more Damage than a Boxer who just wet a round with Tyson, and the Bonny had seen better days, so- Time to revamp this Meridian style 2 Cylinder and this time the Owner by the name of “Mixy” decided to give a Sydney Based “Gasoline” Shop a go.

Founder of this little shop in Sydney “Jason Leppa”

The Bonneville was riddled with other issues too. Mixy had made some mild modifications himself, but after meeting Jason and the Gasoline team, he decided to leave it to the experts. Plans for the rebuild expanded, and ‘Blak’ began to take shape.

The front end was binned, and USD forks from a Suzuki GSX-R grafted on. A custom axle and spacers ensure that wheel specs remain the same, and the sportbike forks are held in place by a CNC’d triple clamp. This was by no easy task but, Jason managed to massage the GSX smoothly onto the frame using a set of TT wheels made in california and shodding them with a sticky set of  Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires.

2014-triumph-bonneville-cafe-racer-2

The triple clamp was designed to house a Motogadget Classic speedo—in black of course. An m.lock keyless ignition system keeps the wiring simple, and the Purpose Built Moto switch blocks are sleek and contemporary.

2014-triumph-bonneville-cafe-racer-6

Adding to the racing vibe is a shift from mid to rear sets, this made the motorcycle was more comfortable and a far Racier look, going back to the Days of the North Circular back home in the UK in the 60’s.

But the rear tire is wider than Burt Reynolds old shirt collar with a whopping 190 shoe horned onto the Aluminum rim, this sticks to the road like Gum on a sweater.

2014-triumph-bonneville-cafe-racer-8

The biggest visual change is the new tank, which eschews the somewhat bulbous proportions of the Triumph original.

It’s Gasoline’s take on the classic Yamaha SR tank, fabricated in aluminum and shot with deep satin black paint. Running across the top is a subtle gloss black racing stripe.

2014-triumph-bonneville-cafe-racer-5a

The subframe has been reworked in-house too, and now supports a new fiberglass seat pan hand molded by Gasoline’s head tech. The local artisans at the Bad Arse Trim Co. made up a new seat to match, using a dark shade of suede.

There’s an integrated LED tail and indicator light strip flushed into the tail, and tiny indicators up front from Kellermann. “They are some of the smallest LEDs you’ll ever find,” says Jason, “but still bright enough to cut through the darkness.”

2014-triumph-bonneville-cafe-racer-7

The headlight has the old style Fog lens that gives the impression of a Foundry’s  Cauldron when ignited, plenty of brightness from that and letting people know that this Stealthy Middleweight is coming through.

2014-triumph-bonneville-cafe-racer-4

Petrol tank was hand fabbed in Aluminum then plastered in Black Semi Gloss paint and it has a bulbous shoulder to exaggerated the lines a little and something that really works well.

This is a pretty well sorted machine now and its a shame I wasn’t still a Posty in St Leonards,  as I often went into Sydney and would of been great to check this Bonny out.

2014-triumph-bonneville-cafe-racer-3

Great job to “Jason Leppa” you did a fantastic Custom look in a short amount of time, something that is not easy to do and get right.

Short Movie Bonnie Lass

Todays Blog is a short movie about a couple of fellas that ride from one cafe to another to meet a couple of Birds, along the way, riding through their town and a motorcycle garage, shame they didnt stop in there but, they head to the cafe and meet up with a couple of Girls, I guess they hook up and then they ride off into the sunset.

Worth a look, Good Music track though., make your own mind up, takes a lot of time to get a small production together, believe me, been doing that years and I take my hat or helmet off to the director for getting it completed.

It’s a short movie 3 minutes but worth a look, maybe a sequel coming?

bonnie lass2

This short movie celebrates our enduring and timeless passion for motorcycles. The attraction in this story is not limited to two-wheeled machines. If you are a biker you will surely understand. It features young Triumph owners and their friends and although this is a fictional story it sets out to capture the lasting enthusiasm for these British icons.

The period black & white film style was chosen to reflect the era of classic 50s and 60s British motorbikes. In contrast, the 2017 soundtrack by Black Pistol Fire makes no secret that this is about today’s bikers, both young and old.

My aim was to capture the thrill of owning these beautiful machines through a nostalgic lens and hopefully inspire other young riders who are seeking to express their own individuality.

I am excited by the resurgence of café-racers and custom built bikes which remain popular to this day. The road scenes between the two cafés in my movie was inspired by the origin of the appropriately named café-racers of yesteryear.

bonnie lass3

This is a very personal project for several reasons. I took my motorcycle test in 1970 at the age of fourteen and I have ridden motorbikes ever since. Most of the bikes I’ve owned were manufactured in the Far East with one or two from Austria and Germany. It was only two years ago when I bought my first Triumph, a special edition Rocket X. In the past year I bought a 2011 Triumph Tiger 800. I really enjoy riding both these bikes, each one with its own special character.

It was a serendipitous moment when I found the backing track “Don’t Ask Why”. My daughter sent me a Spotify link to a completely different band and when I clicked ‘shuffle and play’ the Black Pistol Fire track came up instead. The title and beat suited the story perfectly and is just what I was searching for. After listening to a few tracks from the album Deadbeat Graffiti I immediately made a purchase and downloaded it. These two guys make a great sound so please check them out.

I hope you like the film and see if you can spot the “Time-Traveller” who features in it.

Bonnie Lass

Being an amateur filmmaker, the project was a new challenge for me, with scripted scenes, a cast, location planning and post-production editing. I am really grateful to the cast who got fully involved in the project and to everyone else who has given me advice and support.

A few cups of coffee was the total production costs so a really BIG THANK YOU to everyone who gave their time freely to take part or let us use their premises as film sets! If people like it then maybe we will make a sequel next summer.

Hiawatha the Bonneville that’s Sharper than a Tomahawk!

Well, you see many different style of Motorcycles around the globe that have taken a good and strong foot hold on the Cafe Racer, Brat, Bobber, Tracker, Custom look, and this is no exception.

Hiawatha2

I obviously have been into these style bikes as a kid, when I was 12, me and my brother had a french Mobylette, Dad bought it for $20 and it had no seat, we removed the Mudguards, and headlight and fitted Dirt bike handle bars and use a skateboard deck for the seat and, a Brat was Born, and over 40 odd years later, they are still being created today.

Hiawatha1

Dubbed the “Hiawatha” after the native Americans the platform of choice was a 2007 Bonneville, Not the last of the Mohicans but, the last of the carburetor motors as in 2008 the Fuel Injected models arrived.

Hiawatha6

This bike was being built by the Ton up garage for a Client out in Lisbon, and a second hand 2007 Bonny was located as the Platform to create a unique Brat style machine for the Customer.

Hiawatha5

First off was to strip parts off the machine they no longer needed, the seat was taken off and the frame rails were altered to allow for a Custom seat base to be fabricated, once that was completed, it was upholstered with memory foam and stitched in the old school style Tuck n Roll, with a grey Naugahyde material for a long lasting comfortable ride, as well as being able to take his partner on the back as and when desired.

Hiawatha3

A set of much wider Western style Handlebars were fitted, as well as removing the old Master cylinder for the clutch and a hydraulic version fitted, this really cleans the front end up and with the smaller Speedometer and headlight, the bike has a really different stance.  Magura hydraulic master cylinder clutch and brake are a good quality set up and will help stop this machine way faster than the stock set up and with less hand pressure.

Hiawatha7

At this part of the blog I like to point out, “Each to their own” Some people will like what they have done, some may not, its all in the eye of the beholder, I hear many complain about the big bulbous tires and small head light, its a style, like some of you like wear hoodies and Converse, so give this bike a chance.

Hiawatha8

Many complain that it will ride so badly, well, unless you have built and ridden one, you will never know, I have built many and, although way different to modern tires, you get used to drop off in corners. This is a Custom Brat style build, not a T.T. machine, so a slower speed to take the area in, rather than a Ton Up Rocket.

Hiawatha9

I personally love this Custom created machine from a work of art, its unique and very well thought out, I love fat tires, just look back to early 1940’s Harleys, they had fat tires, I think that these do have a certain equal proportion to the machine and sitting on 16 inch tires will sit level now.

Hiawatha10

The engine had a little bit of tune up and then painted black, of which I like, the carbs were re-jetted as Up-swept Megaphones were fitted and the headers were wrapped for that old race track look, I like this too, many dont, like I said, “each to their own”. Also New K&N Filters were added to help these Carbs breath more easily.

Hiawatha11

The wire harness was modified and the battery was replaced with a smaller Lithium model and hidden with the rest of the electronics under the seat, this keeps everything neat and tidy and having the Rims and hubs painted Black sets the whole motorcycle off big time.

Hiawata_lefth_1600x900-cr-1600x898

Suspension was sorted out with an expensive set of rear Ohlins and re-springed front end, made sure that this beast is a comfortable ride and soaks up any of the bumps on the Lisbon Tarmac.

Hand fabricated rear fender is Bobbed to make this machine look bigger and the small bates style tail light may be small but LED lighting is brighter than Einstein.

The Olive Drag green with a flattening Agent works well against the Silver Base and even though I personally am not a fan of Green, this works really well, I mean the Thruxtons  came out in BRG, and this color concept does indeed work very well against the Black of the frame, exhaust and wheels.

Thanks for looking and, if I can help locate or sell parts for you and your machine, just let me know.
